Book excerpt: Biological invasions are of interest both because they are causing extinctions worldwide and because they offer unique opportunities to study highly dynamic ecological processes. I examined ant invasions at five natural area sites in the Hawaiian Islands to better understand the factors that influence impacts on arthropod populations, species and communities. Ant invasion usually led to significant changes in overall arthropod community composition, particularly among endemic subsets of the communities. When compositional stability was measured as proportional change in richness, the best predictor of endemic community stability was endemic richness, with richer communities losing proportionately more species than species-poor communities. This relationship suggests that communities that had already lost many endemic species were resistant to further species loss, while more intact communities remained vulnerable to species loss upon ant invasion. Communities also underwent strong but idiosyncratic functional shifts as a result of ant invasion, both in terms of trophic structure and total arthropod biomass. There were no apparent relationships, however, between functional stability and community diversity or density measures.

Detailed studies of damaging invasive species contribute importantly to the development of effective strategies for conserving biodiversity. Among the many problematic invasive social insects, the western yellowjacket Vespula pensylvanica represents an emerging and harmful introduction. Because Hawaii lacks any native eusocial insects, the invasion of V. pensylvanica poses a potentially devastating threat to the native and largely endemic biota of this region. This study examines the underlying mechanisms of a social wasp invasion in Hawaii. Using ecological approaches and molecular methods, I quantify the effects of an invasive yellowjacket on native prey and competitors. This study identifies factors affecting invasion success, and contributes to the development of effective management strategies that minimize the ecological impacts of invasive social insects on native communities.

Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).

Book excerpt: An intensive sampling of all ant species encountered on 6 Hawaiian Islands: Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai took place between 1988 and 1996. Species presence and absence was recorded at each site. Using remote sensing, variables were added insitu and used throughout my analysis. Species accumulation curves suggest that sampling was comprehensive. There is a significant trend between island area and species richness which validates the Theory of Island Biogeography for invasive species. Islands were found to be significantly nested by area, order, and tourism. Cluster analysis shows a link between elevation, land-use and island, and species presence. Predictive models can be built to predict spread of particular ant species as they continue toward equilibrium.
