Book The Effects of Internet Use on Productivity and Growth at the Firm Level

Download or read book The Effects of Internet Use on Productivity and Growth at the Firm Level written by Sung-Bae Mun and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internet is profoundly transforming every aspect of production and business processes. Firms now employ various applications of the internet for the purpose of marketing, supply-chain management, human resources management, and etc. Consequently, the use of internet can provide firms with an opportunity to enhance productivity and develop new goods and services. Even though the positive benefits of the internet on business activities seem to be obvious, there have been few empirical studies which carefully quantify the effects of the internet on firm performance. It is essential to explore firm-level data in order to understand the exact economic impact of internet use. This study investigates the effects of internet use on labor productivity, sales, and employment growths at the firm-level in Korea using data from the Survey of Business Activities for the period of 2006-2008. The survey is annually conducted by the Statistics Korea and covers all firms in both the manufacturing and service sectors, with more than 50 employees. The estimation sample includes 7,873 manufacturing firms and 4,346 service firms. The results of the study indicate that a firm using the internet in its production and business processes has about 1.5%p higher annual labor productivity growth rate and 0.6%p higher sales growth rate than a firm not using the internet. The results also suggest that the annual growth rate of employment for a firm using the internet is about 1.4%p higher than that for a firm not using the internet. The analysis on a subsample of manufacturing and service sector firms shows that the positive effects of internet use on the growth rates of labor productivity and sales are much more significant for manufacturing firms than for service sector firms. The effect of internet use on employment, on the other hand, is similar for manufacturing and services sector firms.

Book Use of the Internet and Its Impact on Productivity and Sales Growth in Female Owned Firms

Download or read book Use of the Internet and Its Impact on Productivity and Sales Growth in Female Owned Firms written by Aparna Gosavi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet has completely transformed our lives on an individual basis in many ways, ranging from the way we communicate through the way we socialize to the way we shop and travel. Businesses are no exception to this premise. This paper studies the adoption of the Internet by female-owned firms in India. It uses the World Bank's Enterprise Surveys Program data set for the year 2014 to study the adoption of the Internet by more than 10,000 firms in the country. After controlling for a large number of firm-level characteristics, empirical results obtained indicate that female-owned firms are more likely to use the Internet than their male counterparts. However, further empirical analysis shows that more intensive adoption of the Internet by these female-owned firms does not necessarily translate into better performance. Specifically, the adoption of the Internet does not make female-owned firms more or less likely to have better productivity and sales growth in contrast to that of their male counterparts.

However, ICTs also pose varied challenges to firms in order to benefit from these potentials. Highlighting the importance of innovations, firm-sponsored training, and recruitment of high-skilled workers, this monograph analyses why and to what extent firms differ in their capabilities to make ICT work productively. The work also comprises a detailed discussion of economic theory concerning ICT use and complementary firm strategies. In addition it provides a comprehensive treatment of various methodological issues concerning the measurement of firm-level productivity in econometric analyses.

Book The Internet as a General Purpose Technology

Download or read book The Internet as a General Purpose Technology written by Christine Zhenwei Qiang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses firm-level data to assess whether telecommunication services are general-purpose technologies (technologies that benefit a large segment of the economy and have long-lasting effect). It finds that only Internet services are so: firm growth and productivity are much higher when Internet access is greater and when firms use the Internet more intensively; and Internet access benefits firms in high- and low-tech industries, firms of all sizes, and exporter and non-exporter firms. Small firms appear to benefit more from the Internet than large firms do. In contrast, fixed-line and cellular services are not robustly linked to firm performance.

Book Global Productivity

Download or read book Global Productivity written by Alistair Dieppe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic struck the global economy after a decade that featured a broad-based slowdown in productivity growth. Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies presents the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution and drivers of productivity growth, examines the effects of COVID-19 on productivity, and discusses a wide range of policies needed to rekindle productivity growth. The book also provides a far-reaching data set of multiple measures of productivity for up to 164 advanced economies and emerging market and developing economies, and it introduces a new sectoral database of productivity. The World Bank has created an extraordinary book on productivity, covering a large group of countries and using a wide variety of data sources. There is an emphasis on emerging and developing economies, whereas the prior literature has concentrated on developed economies. The book seeks to understand growth patterns and quantify the role of (among other things) the reallocation of factors, technological change, and the impact of natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is must-reading for specialists in emerging economies but also provides deep insights for anyone interested in economic growth and productivity. Martin Neil Baily Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution Former Chair, U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers This is an important book at a critical time. As the book notes, global productivity growth had already been slowing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and collapses with the pandemic. If we want an effective recovery, we have to understand what was driving these long-run trends. The book presents a novel global approach to examining the levels, growth rates, and drivers of productivity growth. For anyone wanting to understand or influence productivity growth, this is an essential read. Nicholas Bloom William D. Eberle Professor of Economics, Stanford University The COVID-19 pandemic hit a global economy that was already struggling with an adverse pre-existing condition—slow productivity growth. This extraordinarily valuable and timely book brings considerable new evidence that shows the broad-based, long-standing nature of the slowdown. It is comprehensive, with an exceptional focus on emerging market and developing economies. Importantly, it shows how severe disasters (of which COVID-19 is just the latest) typically harm productivity. There are no silver bullets, but the book suggests sensible strategies to improve growth prospects. Book excerpt: Latin America and the Caribbean continues to face adverse global headwinds: high interest rates, modest G-7 growth, soft commodity prices and uncertain prospects in China will all depress growth. Well-grounded policy responses have led to largely recovering employment and income losses from the pandemic and falling rates of inflation. However, the region faces the mutually reinforcing triple challenges of low growth, limited fiscal space, and citizen dissatisfaction. Expanding digital connectivity offers a possibility to make progress on all three fronts. To maximize the social benefits of connectivity as well as to ensure that it does not exacerbate spatial, educational, gender or racial inequalities, three challenges are important to address: first, expanding coverage to the remaining unconnected areas as well as improving the quality of service; second, increasing the productive use of existing infrastructure, and; third, as with any other infrastructure "hardware," investments in "software" - such as digital and traditional skills, managerial capabilities, supportive regulatory frameworks, and deeper financial markets are critical.

Book Applied Economics in the Digital Era

Download or read book Applied Economics in the Digital Era written by James Alleman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Madden was a renaissance man with respect to the nexus between information and communications technology (ICT) and economics. He contributed to a variety of fields in ICT: applied econometrics, forecasting, internet governance and policy. This series of essays, two of which were co-authored by Professor Madden prior to his untimely death, cover the range of his research interests. While the essays focus on a number of ICT issues, they are on the frontier of research in the sector. Gerard Faulhaber provides a broad overview of how we have reached the digital age and its implications. The applied econometric section brings the latest research in the area, for example Lester Taylor illustrates how own-price, cross-price and income elasticities can be calculated from survey data and translated into real income effects. The forecasting section ranges from forecasting online political participation to broadband’s impact on economic growth. The final section covers aspects of governance and regulation of the ICT sector.
