Book excerpt: This study surveyed 65 college students to see how interaction with older adults affects college students' attitudes toward older adults. A population of students who participated in an activity with older adults for class were compared with a control sample. No significant difference in attitudes on aging was found between those that participated in the activity and those who did not. Women were found to have more positive views on aging. More times of interaction with older adults was significantly positively correlated with the overall rating of time spent with older adults. More times of interaction correlates with less ageist idas about older adults.

Book Intergenerational Programming

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to extend the intergenerational research by examining children's attitudes toward older adults and older adults' perceptions of children following participation in intergenerational programs. The connection between children's attitudes toward the elderly and the characteristics and perceptions of older adults in intergenerational programs appears to be overlooked in the intergenerational literature. The question arises whether intergenerational contact within long-term care facilities can result in childrens' positive attitudes toward the elderly when participants in nursing homes tend to fulfill the negative physical and behavioral stereotypes that perpetuate negative attitudes toward the elderly. Thirty-six, elementary students and twenty elderly institutionalized residents participated bi-weekly in two programs: (a) a general program with residents in a main facility, and (b) a dementia program with residents in a dementia unit. Students completed the modified Analysis of Attitudes of Students for the purpose of deductively examining the relationships between the variables of gender, program affiliation, and number of years of participation. Statistical analyses identified that: (a) there was no significant difference in attitude between students in the general and dementia programs, (b) there was no significant difference in attitude between male and female students, and (c) students participating for two years demonstrated a significantly more positive attitude than did those participating for one year. Students in both the general and dementia programs provided more positive than negative responses when they were asked what they liked and did not like about the programs. Residents in the general program were interviewed using the modified Older Adult Interview for the purpose of deductively exploring the perceptions of the residents toward the children and the program. Residents in the general program provided more positive responses than either negative or neutral responses in reference to the program and the children. In the general program, both the residents and the students identified many aspects of the program that they liked and only a few aspects they disliked.

Book Examining the Effects of Aging Courses on College Students

Download or read book Examining the Effects of Aging Courses on College Students written by Linda Babula and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The advancement of medical technology has increased the chances of people in the United States living to an older age (Reed, Beall, & Baumhover, 1992; Shoemake & Rowland, 1993). Unfortunately, few students are interested in geriatrics as a career (Wilderom et al., 1990). It is vital for students entering into the health care profession to have an unbiased attitude toward the older population. This study was done to determine if the attitudes of students toward the elderly, the desire of students to work with the elderly, and the age range the students consider to be old were positively affected by an aging course. Students completed the Kogan Attitude Scale (Kogan, 1967) and three additional questions before and after an aging course. There was a significant positive difference in the attitudes toward the elderly. However, there were no significant differences in the desire to work in geriatrics or with the age range considered to be old. Based on the results, an aging course may positively influence attitudes toward the elderly, but not affect the desire to work with the elderly or the age range considered to be old.
