Book The Effects of Instructions on Prosocial Behavior of Preschool Children

Download or read book The Effects of Instructions on Prosocial Behavior of Preschool Children written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment examined the effects of instructions on the prosocial behavior (i.e., helping, sharing, teaching, and sympathy) of preschool children. Forty-eight individual children (X = 56.7 months) interacted with two adult women on two separate occasions, an initial session measuring baseline levels of prosocial behavior, and a second session several days later. In the second session, children received instructions in helping, sharing, and teaching, and an opportunity to rehearse, or practice, these prosocial behaviors. Children were given either power assertive instructions (i.e., instructions which directly told the child what to do), or inductive instructions (i.e., instructions which focused the child's attention on the needs of others). A control group received no instructions to behave prosocially. At the close of the second session, all children were given an immediate test to assess their level of helping, sharing, and teaching in the absence of instructions. An opportunity to display sympathy or comforting behavior was included to test for generalization of the instructional training to a new behavior. Approximately one week later a third session, where the child interacted with two new adult women who gave no instructions but presented opportunities for the child to help, share, teach, and sympathize, was included to test for internalization and long term generalization.

Book The Roots of Prosocial Behavior in Children

Download or read book The Roots of Prosocial Behavior in Children written by Nancy Eisenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-08-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kinds of childbearing practices foster the development of helping, sharing, and other prosocial behaviours? What roles do biology and culture play in the development of prosocial behaviour? In this book, Nancy Eisenberg and Paul Mussen review and summarize scholarly research that has been devoted to the development of prosocial behaviour in children, and examine the variety of influences that contribute to children's prosocial development, including the media, parents, peers, biology, culture, personal characteristics, as well as situational determinants. The authors argue that prosocial behaviour can be learned and is modifiable, and they suggest ways that parents, teachers, and other can enhance prosocial development. In addition, the authors attempt to communicate the advances in the study of prosocial development that have taken place over the last decade. The book highlights some questions that have not yet been addressed adequately by researchers, and suggests areas for future work.

Book Handbook of Positive Psychology in Schools

Download or read book Handbook of Positive Psychology in Schools written by Michael J. Furlong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National surveys consistently reveal that an inordinate number of students report high levels of boredom, anger, and stress in school, which often leads to their disengagement from critical learning and social development. If the ultimate goal of schools is to educate young people to become responsible and critically thinking citizens who can succeed in life, understanding factors that stimulate them to become active agents in their own leaning is critical. A new field labeled "positive psychology" is one lens that can be used to investigate factors that facilitate a student’s sense of agency and active school engagement. The purposes of this groundbreaking Handbook are to 1) describe ways that positive emotions, traits, and institutions promote school achievement and healthy social/emotional development 2) describe how specific positive-psychological constructs relate to students and schools and support the delivery of school-based services and 3) describe the application of positive psychology to educational policy making. By doing so, the book provides a long-needed centerpiece around which the field can continue to grow in an organized and interdisciplinary manner. Key features include: Comprehensive – this book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of what is known about positive psychological constructs and the school experiences of children and youth. Topical coverage ranges from conceptual foundations to assessment and intervention issues to service delivery models. Intrapersonal factors (e.g., hope, life satisfaction) and interpersonal factors (e.g., positive peer and family relationships) are examined as is classroom-and-school-level influences (e.g., student-teacher and school-community relations). Interdisciplinary Focus – this volume brings together the divergent perspectives, methods, and findings of a broad, interdisciplinary community of scholars whose work often fails to reach those working in contiguous fields. Chapter Structure – to insure continuity, flow, and readability chapters are organized as follows: overview, research summary, relationship to student development, examples of real-world applications, and a summarizing table showing implications for future research and practice. Methodologies – chapters feature longitudinal studies, person-centered approaches, experimental and quasi-experimental designs and mixed methods.

Book Impact of Prosocial Classroom and Home Learning Programs on Preschool Children s Prosocial Behavior

Download or read book Impact of Prosocial Classroom and Home Learning Programs on Preschool Children s Prosocial Behavior written by Susan M. Doescher and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the impact of prosocial classroom and home learning programs on children's prosocial behavior. More specifically, it determined the influences of adult modeling and encouragement in these programs on children's cooperating, sharing, and helping behaviors immediately following the six-week intervention programs, and six weeks after the programs' termination. Subjects were 52 children enrolled in three preschools including (a) Group I (n=18) - Classroom Program, (b) Group II (n=17) - Home Learning Program, and (c) Group III (n=17) - Control Program. The Modified Prosocial Behavior Questionnaire was used to assess teachers' perceptions of children's prosocial behavior, while Situational Tests were used to assess children's actual cooperation, sharing, and helping behaviors. All subjects were tested prior to the six-week intervention period, immediately following the intervention, and six weeks after intervention termination. A series of 3 (Group) X 3 (Testing Time) repeated-measures analyses of covariance were used to analyze children's prosocial behavior scores. Results revealed teachers in the Classroom Program, in comparison to those in the Home Learning and Control Programs, perceived significantly greater increases in children's total prosocial behavior, and their cooperating, sharing, and helping behaviors, immediately following the six-week intervention period. These differences continued to significantly increase or were maintained six weeks after intervention termination. In addition, the Classroom and Home Learning Programs, in comparison to the Control Program, lead to significant increases in children's actual cooperation behavior at the end of the intervention period. These differences were maintained six weeks following intervention termination. The Classroom Program had a significantly greater impact on children's cooperation behavior than the Home Learning Program immediately following the intervention. Both Classroom and Home Learning Programs had no significant impact on the actual helping and sharing behaviors of children. Measurement problems related to the assessment of these behaviors were evident. Repeated testing over time had a significant impact on children's Verbal Sharing behavior. In addition, possible age increases in the development of prosocial behavior may have occurred during the experiment. No sex differences were found in the prosocial behavior of children or as a result of participation in the intervention programs.

Book excerpt: Beginning with Bandura's Bobo doll study, research has repeatedly demonstrated that children exposed to physical aggression often subsequently model the same aggressive behaviors. Although modeling prosocial behavior has been less studied, available research indicates increases in modeled prosocial behaviors. The present study seeks to determine whether modeled prosocial behavior decreases aggression and increases prosocial behavior among physically aggressive preschoolers. Using a multiple baseline design across participants, four preschool aged children were exposed to three phases of a prosocial modeling intervention. The first modeling phase examined the effect of viewing and then role-playing specific, predetermined prosocial behaviors. The second phase consisted of participants viewing two peers modeling these prosocial behaviors. The final intervention phase involved participants watching themselves perform these prosocial behaviors, also called self-modeling. Both graphic and statistical analyses suggest that all four participants evidenced an immediate and sharp decline in aggressive behaviors between baseline and the role-play phase of the intervention. These declines in physical aggression were maintained throughout the peer modeling and self-modeling phases, as well as at follow-up. Results indicate that prosocial modeling had no effect upon subsequent prosocial behaviors. Implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Book Prosocial Development

Download or read book Prosocial Development written by Laura M. Padilla-Walker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosocial behavior-broadly defined as voluntary action intended to help or benefit another-has been associated with positive outcomes across the lifespan. Children with a more prosocial orientation are better liked and trusted by their peers, have a higher status in peer groups, are better at maintaining friendships, demonstrate better self regulation, empathy, and social cognitive skills, and excel in academics. Researchers have shown that prosocial behaviors correlate to lower rates of school suspension and drop-out, teen pregnancy, substance use, aggression, and delinquency. These positive effects speak to the value of prosocial behavior during formative years. Prosocial Development examines a variety of biological, socialization, and contextual influences on prosocial development from infancy through early adulthood. While the definition of prosocial behavior may seem straightforward, recent research has highlighted its multifaceted nature. This volume specifically focuses on the multidimensionality of prosocial development, examining different contexts, motivations, types, and targets of prosocial behavior that are differentially predicted by socialization and dispositional characteristics. Skillfully edited by Drs. Padilla-Walker and Carlo, each chapter in this volume highlights some aspect of multidimensionality in regard to prosocial behavior and meaningful avenues for future research. This volume will be an important tool for scholars, researchers, and practitioners who are interested in prosocial, moral, and positive youth development. The organization and focus of this volume are also well-suited for use as a text for graduate courses in moral development, child and adolescent development, social psychology, sociology, anthropology, and family studies.
