Book The Effect of Community Based Externships on Host Sites

Download or read book The Effect of Community Based Externships on Host Sites written by James C. Cannava and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: This purpose of this study was to better understand the attitudes of community health center dentists towards community-based externships (CBEs) and determine if previous experience supervising dental students affected their opinions. Methods: Ninety-nine dentists in Washington State were asked to complete either an internet or mail-based survey. Of the 69 dentists in Washington State who responded (response rate: 69 percent), 45 had experience supervising dental students participating in CBEs. The survey questioned the effects of CBEs on dental students, patients, the clinic and the dentists themselves. The survey also asked for dentists' opinions on why a clinic would host dental students, who should pay for the program expenses and what incentives should be given to supervising dentists. Results: Nearly all respondents (97 percent) felt that a CBE had a positive impact on a student's education. Dentists with experience supervising dental students were more likely to report the programs' effects on patients and the students' delivered quality of care as neutral or negative (p=0.035 and p=0.034, respectively). The most-preferred incentives for dentists' participation in CBEs were a financial bonus and free continuing education classes. Dentists did not report an increase in overall clinic productivity when a student was present. Ninety-one percent of the respondents did not feel that community-based clinics should pay dental schools when hosting dental students and 56% did not think the clinic should pay for a student's living expenses. Conclusion: More efforts should be made to understand the components of quality of care and how best to maintain it in the CBE setting. Staff dentists should be considered key stakeholders in the design and implementation of CBE programs.

Book Assessing Interpersonal Communication in Dental Hygiene Students Providing Geriatric Care

Download or read book Assessing Interpersonal Communication in Dental Hygiene Students Providing Geriatric Care written by Lasandra Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Purpose: This study examined the implementation of an educational module regarding development of communication skills between dental hygiene students and the geriatric population. The educational module assessed students’ perceived abilities and confidence in communicating with the geriatric population. Subsequently, a standardized rubric determined if there is a difference between how faculty assess students, patients assess students, and students assess themselves. Methods: Dental hygiene students from the University of South Dakota participated in the educational module and completed pre and post tests. Voice recordings from student-patient interactions in the clinic setting were evaluated by faculty, patients, and students using a rubric derived from the Gap-Kalamazoo. Data was compared for quantitative changes. Results: A total of fifty-six dental hygiene students (N=56) were included in the research study; thirty-one first-year students (n=31) and twenty-five second-year students (n=25). Analysis of pre-test to first post-test revealed statistically significant changes in student’s knowledge (p

Book Interprofessional Education on Oral Care for Cancer Patients in Dental Hygiene and Nursing

Download or read book Interprofessional Education on Oral Care for Cancer Patients in Dental Hygiene and Nursing written by Shaun Christenson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Purpose: Interprofessional education (IPE) provides academic experiences for students to learn about different professions, their roles, and improving attitudes toward communications between professions with the intent of improving patient overall healthcare. This study evaluated the impact of IPE and knowledge the students gained on oral healthcare for cancer patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental study used a convenient sample of nursing and dental hygiene students. Participants were given a pre and post survey to collect quantitative data that included a Readiness for lnterprofessional Survey (RIPLS) and a PI-designed multiple-choice survey to determine students' attitudes and learning. A module of IPE and oral cancer care was provided for the students. A case study was presented and students were allowed time to work in preselected mixed groups to design patient care addressing the multiple oral complication a cancer patient can experience. Anecdotal data was collected via student comments. Results: Study results demonstrated an improvement in participant's knowledge of oral care for cancer patients' oral complications, attitudes towards interprofessional communications, and understanding of professional roles. Conclusion: The implementation of an IPE experience demonstrated a correlation between an IPE experience and participant's attitudes and learning. Patients undergoing cancer treatment will experience some form of oral complications. Preparing students to meet the needs of the cancer patient's oral health will ultimately decrease oral complications and patient mortality"--Leaf xiii.
