Book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population

Download or read book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population written by Stephen E. Doyle (M.S.N.) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to test for factors predicting AIDS-preventive safe sexual behavior, a battery comprising a demographic questionnaire, an AIDS Self-Efficacy questionnaire, a Sexual Behavior Index, and an AIDS Awareness Survey were administered to 118 undergraduate students (ages 19-28, 93% African American) at a predominantly African American state-supported university in the southeastern US. Possible predictors tested were gender, self-efficacy, perceived self-efficacy while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and source of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Under multiple linear regression, there were statistically significant correlations between each of these predictor variables and safe sexual behavior. Under a full model regression, self-efficacy was the only significant factor to predict safe sex practices. The study supported the effectiveness of the university's system of programs to provide HIV information to students. Implications for nursing are discussed.

Book Predictors of Communication about Sexual Health Among Young Partners

Download or read book Predictors of Communication about Sexual Health Among Young Partners written by Nicas Joseph Ngogo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication about sexual health as means of promoting safer sex is particularly important to young people who are mostly at risk of STI and HIV infections. This research based work examine the effects of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and perceived self-efficacy related to practices of protective sexual behaviors on communication about sexual health among young partners selected from Teachers Training college in Mbeya, Tanzania. Participants of this work demonstrated high knowledge about HIV/AIDS and perceived self-efficacy related to practices of protective sexual behaviour. However, their communication about sexual health with their sex partners was found to be very low. This work also revealed that while knowledge about HIV/AIDS was not a statistically significant predictor of communication about sexual health, perceived self-efficacy was. The prevalence of low communication about sexual health among participants suggested that there is a need for examining and reviewing both the content and the process of HIV/AIDS school/college based programmes so as include aspects of sexual health communication as part of their components.

Book HIV AIDS Related Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviour of FET College Students

Download or read book HIV AIDS Related Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviour of FET College Students written by Colleen Gail Moodley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantitative findings indicated high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, self-concept and self-efficacy. Risky sexual behaviour was measured in terms of condom use and the number of sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study with males reporting significantly more risky sexual behaviour. More males (70% vs. 43 % females) reported no condom use when engaging in sex. More males (62 % vs. 28 % females) reported having had two or more sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study. Results also suggested that an increase in knowledge of HIV/AIDS would predict an increase in the use of condoms particularly for males. Lower self-efficacy seemed to predict an increase in the number of sexual partners for males. The focus group discussions highlighted students' views of HIV/AIDS knowledge in relation to their sexual practices, attitudes and sexual decision-making. Influences such as personal factors (self-concept and self-efficacy), social factors (e.g. peer influences, gender, and status) and environmental factors (e.g. media) were investigated. Participants also commented on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS campaigns and the adequacy in provision of health services at college and community level. From the findings, guidelines were developed which may be used to reflect on current intervention programmes and may be considered when developing future interventions programmes, policies, or campaigns in promoting safer sexual practices amongst youth as a means of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Book Implications of Sexual Risk Assessment for HIV Intervention Planning

Download or read book Implications of Sexual Risk Assessment for HIV Intervention Planning written by EDNA. ARYEE and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ID: 10997Background Study Objective(s): Increasing HIV/AIDS knowledge alone does not stem the spread of HIV among young Ghanaian women. Rather, the solution lies in enhancing the individual's appreciation of her own risk and self-efficacy for reducing risky behaviours (Sallar, 2001). The current dissertation aims to understand the factors related to HIV/AIDS sexual risk behaviour among young Ghanaian women. In an expansion of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model (ARRM; Catania, 1990), psychological (sexual assertiveness and self-esteem), interpersonal (resiliency), and cultural variables (spirituality, cultural mistrust, gender roles, childhood sexual abuse, social health, and Africentrism) were identified to assist in the prediction of stage-specific variables at each stage (i.e., Labeling, Commitment, and Enactment) of the ARRM. Sexual risk behaviour was further examined in relationship to diverse demographic variables. Methods: Using quantitative exploratory survey and convenience sampling methods, two hundred (N=200) female participants were recruited at three institutions in Accra, Ghana. Results: Labeling: Labeling was positively related to Peer Norm. However, Labeling was negatively related HIV/AIDS Risk Knowledge and Susceptibility to HIV. Further, there was a positive relationship between Labeling and HIV Testing (at the Commitment Stage). The overall regression for the expanded predictors model on Labeling was not statistically significant. Education and age accounted for the bulk of the explained variance at this stage. Commitment: HIV testing intention was negatively related to age and marital status. However, it was positively related to education. Overall, neither the ARRM nor the expanded ARRM variables predicted Commitment. However, there was a positive relationship between Self- esteem and Commitment. Enactment: Condom Use Self-efficacy was positively related to age. Education was positively related to Enactment. For the expanded predictors, Perception of Sexual Enjoyment, Sexual Communication, Spirituality and Self-Esteem were negatively related to Enactment. There was also a positive relationship between Sexual Assertiveness and Enactment. Conclusion: Together, findings validated the Expanded ARRM as a fairly reliable model that helped in the coherent understanding of psychosocial and cultural issues that increase sexual vulnerability in young Ghanaian women. Overall, this study contributes to efforts to promote the use of culturally appropriate strategies in HIV prevention in Ghana.

Book Sexual Interactions and HIV Risk

Download or read book Sexual Interactions and HIV Risk written by Mitchell Cohen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How sexual risk is negotiated betwen partners is an area of considerable theoretical interest, with the dominant models of analysis focusing on individual decisions to engage in sexual behaviour and relying on "rational" decision-making. This work, based on the findings from work coordinated by the Centre d'Etudes Sociologiques in Brussels, offers a social critique of the theories and perspectives which have currently been brought to bear in the study of sexual risk behaviour and HIV. Leading European researchers offer a conceptual framework for analysis based on sexual interactions and their social context. The practical relevance of new perspectives on sexual behaviour in the context of HIV/AIDS prevention is also discussed.
