Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Economic Stress and Settlement Changes written by William L. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of the investigation was to ascertain some of the effects that the widespread spraying of herbicides in South Vietnam (SVN) had upon altering population distributions, patterns of settlement (isolated farmsteads, hamlets, villages), and agricultural and other economic activities surrounding the settlements, thus giving some idea of man's ability to continue to use the environment. Using the records of remote-sensing, 25 study areas representing six different socioeconomic types of settlements were studied.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Perceived Effects of Herbicides Used in the Highlands of South Vietnam

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Perceived Effects of Herbicides Used in the Highlands of South Vietnam written by Gerald Cannon Hickey and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the research were threefold. First, an effort was made to determine whether highland villagers in affected areas had actually observed aircraft spraying herbicide. Second, an effort was made to probe into the Highlanders' perception of what happened following the spraying. Third, the inquiry was directed at the villagers' evaluation of the effect of the spraying--whether they saw any relationship between the herbicide and some or all of the perceived changes.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Persistence and Disappearance of Herbicides in Tropical Soils

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Persistence and Disappearance of Herbicides in Tropical Soils written by Geoffrey E. Blackman and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very obvious and legitimate question poses itself when an extraneous material has been introduced into the environment: How long will this material persist, or how fast will it disappear. For the military herbicide operations in South Vietnam this question is particularly obvious and urgent. Herbicides have been used in those operations at levels roughly five to ten times higher than in normal agricultural practices. The report includes herbicide determinations in soils and water supplies at different locations.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report gives a historical survey on the control of weeds by the use of herbicides. Included also are the developments made in agriculture with nitrophenols, mineral oils, and new compounds.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Models of Herbicide Mangroves and War in Vietnam

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Models of Herbicide Mangroves and War in Vietnam written by Howard T. Odum and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report develops data models and simulation of herbicide, mangroves, and the relative role of these in the overall energy system of Viet Nam at war. Simulations of two simplified models of Viet Nam as a whole suggest a pulse of overall war disruption followed by a stimulated recovery, the energy loss during a 20 year period being about 1%. Perspective from comparing energy flows showed an impact of herbicide as 2% of the energy budget of Viet Nam in years of spraying, a greater effect than the rest of the war's disruption.

Book excerpt: Several of the questions posed by the committee on the effects of herbicides in Vietnam regarding mangrove/herbicide relationships are conceivably amenable to air-photo study. Included in the report are Distribution and composition of mangrove forests; herbicide sensitivity and mangrove recovery; mangrove recolonization, and soil relationships.

Book excerpt: The report is a collection of background papers that describe the basis for the analysis of damage to the inland forests of South Vietnam. The task of the forestry study team was to examine the impact of military defoliation in Vietnam upon the inland forests in terms of their short-term and long-term utility as sources of materials useful to the nation and its people.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Estimating the Highlander Population Affected by Herbicides

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Estimating the Highlander Population Affected by Herbicides written by Joseph M. Carrier and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report sets forth some of the basic problems associated with a determination of the number of Highlanders likely to have been affected by the use of herbicides in South Vietnam (SVN). A general belief exists that proportionately more Highlanders were affected by herbicides than were ethnic Vietnamese. This discussion is presented with the hope that it can provide some background material useful for a more detailed investigation.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Epidemiological Ecological Effects Studies on Intact and Deforested Mangrove Ecosystems

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers Epidemiological Ecological Effects Studies on Intact and Deforested Mangrove Ecosystems written by Robert S. Desowitz and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the study was to determine whether the ecological effects of herbicides have resulted in altered epidemiological patterns, particularly with respect to vector-borne infectious diseases. The premise that such epidemiological alterations may occur is based on the hypothesis that the changed ecological settings could provide suitable new breeding habitats for arthropod vectors and rodent reservoirs of these infections.

Book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers The Ecological Role of Bamboos in Relation to the Military Use of Herbicides on Forests of South Vietnam

Download or read book The Effects of Herbicides in South Vietnam Part B Working Papers The Ecological Role of Bamboos in Relation to the Military Use of Herbicides on Forests of South Vietnam written by William B. Drew and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of the study was to find out whether bamboos had replaced broad-leaved trees in the forests of South Vietnam (SVN) as a result of military defoliation, and, if so, on how large a scale. The work was primarily concerned with the Closed forest (Foret dense) because of the much greater amount of commercially valuable timber it contains compared to forests of other types. Secondary objectives were to investigate: The soil; the effect of herbicides on the spread of bamboo; and the economic value of bamboo.
