Book Relationship Between Corn Stalk Strength and Southwestern Corn Borer Penetration

Download or read book Relationship Between Corn Stalk Strength and Southwestern Corn Borer Penetration written by Bradley Kyle Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted to determine if corn stalk strength had an effect on southwestern corn borer (Diatraea grandiosella Dyar) survival during different growth stages. In 2006 southwestern corn borer larvae were placed on corn during the tassel stage near the ear and base of the plant. Survival was higher near the ear than near the base of the plant. In 2007, five varieties of corn were planted at three locations in Mississippi. Plants were infested with five 3rd instar larvae at the ear zone during tassel, dough and dent development stages. After five days stalk strength and borer survival were measured. Survival decreased as the corn progressed from tassel to dent stage. Survival varied among corn varieties. The relationship between stalk strength and borer survival was not consistent, indicating that there are likely factors more directly limiting borer survival than physical stalk strength.

Book Cultural Control of the Southwestern Corn Borer

Download or read book Cultural Control of the Southwestern Corn Borer written by Jerry McCoy Arnold and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural practices designed to increase exposure of the larvae of the Southwestern corn borer insect, Diatraea grandiosella (Dyar), to the elements and predators were effective in increasing overwintering mortality. Burying the larvae was not detrimental to their welfare, but the moths would not be able to emerge from the soil. Reductionof the overwintering population will reduce damage due to the first generation, and should also reduce the populations of later generation moths. Early-planted corn escaped some of the damage. The most consistent advantage for early planting was the reduction in girdling. Corn planted before may 1 was damaged less by girdling in all years and location, although infestation and lodging were not consistently reduced. The use of an early maturing hybrid was not an acceptable substitute for early planting as a means of reducing damage by the southwestern corn borer.

Book Relationships of Host Plant Vigor Stalk Moisture Content and Stalk stored Soluble Carbohydrates to the Girdling Activity of the Southwestern Corn Borer Diatraea Grandiosella Dyar Lepidoptera

Download or read book Relationships of Host Plant Vigor Stalk Moisture Content and Stalk stored Soluble Carbohydrates to the Girdling Activity of the Southwestern Corn Borer Diatraea Grandiosella Dyar Lepidoptera written by Donald B. Zepp and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of experiments was conducted during 1973-1976 at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Missouri Delta Center Research Farm in Pemiscot County, Missouri; these studies were designed to investigate the hypotheses that the girdling activity of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae is directly related to host plant physiology is a regulatory mechanism of this girdling. Corn leaf removal and fruiting prevention studies were undertaken in 1973 in Bonne and Pemiscot Counties. In the latter, data were recorded regarding the effects of leaf removal and/or ear bagging on the incidence of girdling of infested stalks and the effects of planting date on natural infestation. The Boone County portion of these studies provided data regarding the corn stalk moisture and soluble solid contents of the treated plants, and also provided comparison of these factors in girdled and nongirled plants. The girdled plants of this studu were also analyzed to determine their moisture content and soluble solid percentages (SSP) above and below the sites of girdling to detect gradient effects on girdling. Preliminary screening of eight vareties of sweet sorghum (sorgo), two varieties of corn, and one variety each of grain sorghum and sugar cane were conducted in Pemiscot County in 1973. The percentages of successful infestation and infested plants girdled were analyzed and used to select five sorgo varieties for moisture content and SSP analyses in 1974 in Boone County.(...).
