Book The Effect of the Student Success Skills Small Group Counseling Intervention on Factors Associated with Dropout Potential in High School

Download or read book The Effect of the Student Success Skills Small Group Counseling Intervention on Factors Associated with Dropout Potential in High School written by Jodie Weinstein and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study is to add to the outcome research on effective school counseling interventions and to specifically evaluate the effectiveness of the Student Success Skills (SSS) small group intervention with students identified as having drop out potential in the 9th grade. This study analyzed two years of pre-existing, non-identifiable student data (N = 167) collected by school counselors at one high school in South Florida. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine differences in academic grades, standardized test scores, and absences between the students who did participate in the SSS small group intervention when compared to those students who did not participate. Statistically significant differences were found between groups in all three dropout potential factors (GPA, test scores, and absences) supporting the use of SSS small group school counseling intervention with students at risk for dropping out. Effect size estimates were reported for each of the measures.

Book Effects of Group Counseling on Self Concept and Academic Achievement of Selected High School Sophomore Health Classes

Download or read book Effects of Group Counseling on Self Concept and Academic Achievement of Selected High School Sophomore Health Classes written by Theodore David Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to investigate the effects of group counseling on the self concept and academic achievement of high school sophomore health classes. Specific hypotheses to be examined were: 1. The experimental group will evidence more improvement in academic achievement score than will the control group. 2. The experimental group will evidence more improvement in self concept score than will the control group. A review of the literature in group counseling suggests that it can be a factor in increasing measured self concept and measured academic achievement. Within these two areas, however, there were also negative and inconclusive findings. The sample consisted of four tenth-grade required health classes at Corvallis. High School, Corvallis, Oregon. Fifty one individuals participated in the experimental group. They were exposed to group counseling for ten weeks. Complete testing data was obtained for 45 experimental subjects. Fifty individuals participated in the control group. They received ten lectures on health during the same time span as the experimental subjects. Complete testing data was obtained for 43 control subjects. Statistical treatment was applied to the data for 88 subjects. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale and a teacher constructed unit test were administered to subjects prior to the beginning of the research and at the conclusion of the project. Two separate scores on 88 individuals were tabulated. Analysis of variance of experimental variance gain was used comparing experimental and control groups on each instrument. Comparisons between experimental improvement and control improvement scores on the health test did not yield a difference significant at the .05 level, Comparisons on the Tennessee Self Concept scores between experimental and control groups did not yield a difference significant at the .05 level. The effect of group counseling and academic achievement was not determined by this study. Further analysis of the data was made using the orthogonal single degree of freedom analysis of variance. An F- ratio of 6.56, significant at the .015 level was found on the health test scores favoring experimental females and control males. Recommendations for further research in group counseling include: 1. Determination of the maximum effective group size, 2. Investigation with subjects at different age levels, 3. Participation based on specific criteria. 4. Utilization of group counseling in a planned, announced, voluntary course curriculum. 5. Investigation of the effect of group counseling on counselor's image. 6. Utilization of co-counselors in larger group settings. 7. Increasing number of sessions. 8. Investigation of sex variable on academic achievement. 9. Investigation of effect of the sex of group leader upon adolescents. 10. Evaluation using long-term follow up tests. 11. Investigation of instruments used in group counseling evaluation.

Book Effects of Small Learning Communities on Academic Achievement and Comportment of High School Students

Download or read book Effects of Small Learning Communities on Academic Achievement and Comportment of High School Students written by Kimberly Cloud and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1983 when Nation at Risk was released, two major reforms (No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top) were established to improve student academic achievement; yet, the number of high school dropouts continues to rise. The concept of Small Learning Communities (SLC) has been making its way into the traditional school setting since 2000 to help ninth graders make a successful transition to high school and graduate in four years. This study provided an opportunity to examine whether Small Learning Communities improve high school GPA, attendance, and reduce in-house suspensions. The control group consisted of 50 students who did not participate in an SLC and the experimental group consisted of 55 students who did participate in an SLC. The control group and experimental group attended two separate high schools within the same district in Central California. A complete list of all students who participated in an SLC was placed in alphabetical order. A complete list of all students who did not participate in an SLC was placed in alphabetical order. The participants were randomly selected by taking every 10th student for the experimental group and every 12th student for the control group who were alphabetically placed on two separate lists. The data were collected from the 2013-2014 school year and analyzed by using an independent t-test for all hypotheses. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in GPA and suspensions between the two groups but a significant difference in attendance between the two groups. The SLC group experienced a higher attendance rate.

Book Parent Engagement Effects Student Drop Out

Download or read book Parent Engagement Effects Student Drop Out written by Ann A. Brown and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since becoming a teacher my interest was always to endorse dedication to students, and parents. Having parents visit the classroom is very important to grow and maturity of their children. Parent engagement emphases a positive academic growth for students. It also gives support that all students need to perform at the top level. Students from my observation, with parents involved, students were very well behaved and ready to listen. Involved parents should be familiar with the Principal, teachers and school staff. This is a way to assist parents and students to communicate with everyone connected to the school system. Teachers much make parents feel welcome into the classroom. Working as a team will allow all students to excel in their achievements. This is the first proposal to develop positive engagement for all connected to the children. Having a proposal or a contract signed by all is a good tool to consider in finalizing your bond together. Since I was a Counselor and Social Worker before teaching, this allows me to work with problems outside of the classroom. On many occasions I could make suggestions to different agencies that were available to assist parents or extended family members if the need was presented. Anything that will help your students with problems is important for the better classroom performance. Students and parents are the two most important aspects dealing with education that teachers can possibly possess. They are the foundation for teaching and learning. You must have both in order to give all students the best education possible. One of the most extraordinary experiences in my lifetime was to become and educator and work with students, parents with commitment and dedication for academic achievement. Students deserve to have parent engagement especially in the high schools in order to keep them from dropping out.
