Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book College elementary School Reading Partners

Download or read book College elementary School Reading Partners written by Rebecca Sue Kelly Huechteman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine what effects a college and elementary student supplemental independent reading partner project had on the attitudes, word attack skills, and reading comprehension of average fourth grade readers. The study involved 52 fourth graders who had scored in the third quintile on the reading subtest of the Missouri Mastery Achievement Test at the end of the third grade. All elementary students involved in the study were pre-tested and posttested through administrations of the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey and the Word Attack and Passage Comprehension subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery Revised . The 26 students making up the treatment group were assigned college reading partners who met with them twice a week for a half-hour period of recreational reading. The other 26 students, the control group, received only regular classroom instruction. The data in this study were analyzed using analysis of covariance. The posttest means were compared using pretest scores as the covariate and posttest scores as the dependent variable. Results of the analysis revealed a significant improvement in the academic reading attitude, the recreational reading attitude, and the word attack scores of the treatment group when compared to the control group. The improvement in passage comprehension of the treatment group when compared to that of the control group was not statistically significant, but was approaching significance. On the basis of this study it can be concluded that a college-elementary reading partnership which focuses on recreational reading can improve the reading attitudes, word attack skills, and passage comprehension of the average fourth grade reader.

Book The Effects of Repeated Readings Using Independent level Narrative and Informational Texts with Fourth Grade Readers

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Readings Using Independent level Narrative and Informational Texts with Fourth Grade Readers written by Gary P. Moser and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated how the reading rate, accuracy, and ratings of expressive reading was influenced by the type of text and level of text which students practiced, and whether the observed effects were the same for both males and females. This study also examined the estimated reliability of the ratings using the Multidimensional Fluency Scale (Rasinski et al., 2006). The participants (n = 104) were reandomly assigned to treatment groups for a seven-week intervention. The expressive reading of a sample of students (n = 36) was rated using the Multidimensional Fluency Scale (Rasinki et al., 2006). Findings indicate that there were no significant differences for type of text or gender; however, significant differences were found in levels of text for rate, accuracy, and expression and volume.

Book The Effects of Read Aloud Strategies on Comprehension of At risk Students

Download or read book The Effects of Read Aloud Strategies on Comprehension of At risk Students written by Edena White and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study delves into the effects of four read aloud strategies on reading comprehension of fourth grade at-risk students. Two strategies included short stories and two strategies centered around books. The basic read aloud, repeated readings, shared strategy with alternated adult and student reading, and the support read aloud are the strategies implemented. Varied assessments included open-ended questions, multiple choice questions, and written retell. Narrative data was also analyzed to investigate students' behaviors and attitudes. Scores indicated higher levels of comprehension than was recorded earlier this year. The greatest changes were evident in the students' behaviors and attitudes about themselves and their reading. The read aloud experiences rendered positive results.

Book The Effects of Oral Repeated Readings on the Fluency and Comprehension Skills of Urban Elementary aged Students

Download or read book The Effects of Oral Repeated Readings on the Fluency and Comprehension Skills of Urban Elementary aged Students written by Amanda L. Yurick and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.
