Book The Effects of Gender Race and Grade Level on Interest Relevance and Perceived Confidence in Science Among Middle School Students in the Deep South

Download or read book The Effects of Gender Race and Grade Level on Interest Relevance and Perceived Confidence in Science Among Middle School Students in the Deep South written by Jennifer Carruth and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looks at middle school students' attitudes toward three dimensions of perceptions of science (interest, relevance, and competence) and compares student attitudes by gender, age, and race. These measures are expected to reflect the varying potential of these students' interest in pursuing careers in STEM. A sample of 719 students in East-Central Mississippi were asked to rate their level of agreement with statements taken from common surveys for measuring attitudes towards science, the Test of Science Related Attitudes 2 (TOSRA 2) and the Views on Science and Education (VOSE) questionnaires. Logistic regression analyses showed that age is a more significant indicator of low interest and of low competence than gender, and that race does not play a significant role in any dimension. Findings indicate students lose interest earlier than high school, suggesting that earlier interventions may be better at increasing participation in STEM than programs targeting older students.

Book Hosting Professional Scientists in the Classroom

Download or read book Hosting Professional Scientists in the Classroom written by Angela Hopwood and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study scientists were invited into the classroom over a two month period to measure change in students' perceptions of scientists, their willingness to pursue a scientific career, and how they value science. As shown on the Draw-A-Scientist Test, Test of Science Related Attitudes, and student journals, positive change did occur regarding students' perceptions of scientists, their attitudes toward the value of science, and science as a career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why don't more women become scientists? And why do those who do become scientists often face more difficulties than their male counterparts? Every year, about a quarter of a million young men and women in the United States receive their first academic degree in science, mathematics, or engineering. A small fraction will eventually become research scientists. But many who start out with that goal fail to reach it--for reasons that may have less to do with their scientific ability than with their gender. Drawing on a wealth of information (699 questionnaires and 200 interviews) from men and women who gave every promise of scientific achievement, Gerhard Sonnert and Gerald Holton illuminate the partly gender-driven dynamics of "the leaky scientific pipeline." At the heart of this book are gripping personal life stories of ten women and ten men: half became highly successful scientists, the rest left research science. In their own voices, they talk candidly about their career paths, the obstacles and assists they encountered, the difficulties and rewards of attempting to combine a family life with a science career. This highly readable analysis of the gender dimension in scientific careers--and its clear-headed advice--will be of great interest to everyone considering a career in science as well as to teachers, parents, and active scientists. Academics in sociology of science and gender studies as well as decision-makers in the areas of human resources and science policy will also welcome its discussions of general issues and policy recommendations.

Book Male and Female Middle School Students Attitudes Toward Science

Download or read book Male and Female Middle School Students Attitudes Toward Science written by Micheele Lynn Schpakow and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women continue to be underrepresented in certain disciplines of science. Differences in male and female students’ attitudes toward science have been observed down to the middle school level. Attitudes, however, may be formed through the integration of multiple constructs: attitudes toward school science, desire to become a scientist, value of science to society, and perceptions of scientists. To fully understand the problem of the underrepresentation of females in science, differences in male and female middle school students’ attitudes toward science were analyzed across these constructs. A causal-comparative design was used to compare students’ attitudes toward science based on biological sex. The students responded to Likert-type items on the My Attitudes Toward Science survey during their regularly scheduled science class periods. The sample included sixth, seventh, and eighth grade science students in middle schools located in suburban central New Jersey. Data analysis was performed through a multivariate analysis of variance. The findings indicated no significant difference exists in middle school students’ attitudes toward school science, desire to become a scientist, value of science to society, and perceptions of scientists based on biological sex of the students.

Book The Effects of Single Gender Education on Sixth Through Eighth Grade Female Student Science Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Single Gender Education on Sixth Through Eighth Grade Female Student Science Achievement written by Deanna Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, students in the United States are educated in either single or mixed gender learning environments. An achievement gap between male and female students in the area of science indicates a need for instructional strategies and environments that will address these learning needs. Single gender classrooms are one possible solution as males and females have gender differences that may contribute to the way they learn. This quantitative, causal comparative study compared the differences in the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards science achievement scores of middle school females in single and mixed gender environments in a state in the Southeastern United States. Independent samples t tests, Chi-Square Tests, and two-way ANOVA analyses determined if group differences in science achievement existed between sixth through eighth grade female students in single and mixed gender classrooms. Results of the study revealed there was no significant difference in achievement scores between the two groups. The research findings provide the stakeholders with information that can potentially influence the implementation of single gender programs to improve the achievement of female students in middle grades science.
