Historically, African Americans as a race, have endured one of the nation’s most profound tragedies (Boyd & Franklin, 2000). The recorded emergence of Chattel Slavery beginning in the mid-1770s has had an everlasting impact on the social structure of American society (Elligan & Utsey, 1999). African American men particularly, have been classified as a dysfunctional group of individuals by mainstream society. Unfavorable stereotypes have followed African American men as they have remained targets of racial profiling (Welch, 2007) and continuously obtain limited access to academic achievement (Stoops, 2004). It is of relevance that America gain greater insight into the psychological barriers faced by African American men pursuing academic success. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact exposure to police violence observed through social media, may have on the academic self-efficacy of African American male college students. It is hypothesized, that African American male college students exposed to posts of police violence may experience an increase in negative beliefs regarding their racial identity. Subsequent increases of exposure and negative self-perception may lend to decreases in confidence regarding a student’s ability to perform well in academic domains.

Book excerpt: The existing literature is indicative of the fact that violence has been rooted in the mass media like never before and with the growing advancement technological advancement children and adolescents spend considerable amount of time exposed to such violence through various sources of media. In order to address this growing concern, this study analyses the impact of media violence exposure on the development of aggressive feelings, thoughts and behavior in children and youth. The content analysis of TV shows, movies and video games as most commonly used sources of media have been analyzed along with the studies that show rapid increase in violent behavior after being exposed to virtual violence. It also explores the neurophysiological perspectives by analysing the consequences of exposure to violent media on adolescents' brain through neuroimaging. Although limited research has been conducted in this field, but the empirical evidence demonstrates an alteration in the prefrontal mechanisms after exposure to violent media, that are responsible for controlling emotion and behavior leading to aggression. Based on the current longitudinal research, it is also observed that excessive exposure to media violence makes the youth less emotional and desensitized towards real life violence which ultimately leads to aggressive behavior and have negative long-term effects on the brain. Future research should integrate other risk factors and research paradigms in order to have a more comprehensive picture with continuous development in next generations' media technology and changing horizons of violence.

Book excerpt: (Purpose) The purpose of this study was to examine the consequences of violence exposure (personal and community) on African American students at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as well as those attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Further, this study sought to determine if violence exposure makes a difference in academic achievement above and beyond traditional variables that have been studied in the past. (Methodology) Two groups of African American college students were studied to address the question of whether there is a difference between the deleterious effects of violence on African American students attending HBCUs and those attending PWIs. Four theories were hypothesized; the theories alluded to a statistically significant relationship between early exposure to violence and the later academic achievement of African American students at HBCUs and the PWIs. The study also sought to determine if the two groups of students were impacted differently. (Results) Data indicate very strong/strong correlations between and among numerous variables. (Conclusions) Statistical analyses indicate that early exposure to violence, especially personal violence, plays a role in determining the student's locus of control. The student's locus of control then determines the fervor with which the student will engage in academic pursuits. (Recommendations) Professional development incorporating research based techniques that requires participants to think in innovative and creative ways is essential for administrators, faculty, and staff; effective strategies are included. (Additional Data) Contains six (6) tables. A bibliography is included.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study investigated the effects that the viewing of violence in movie clips has on the aggressive affect and self-efficacy for aggression/violence among African American men when the aggressive/violent model is similar versus different to them in race/ethnicity. A dimension of racial identity (race centrality) was also investigated as a protective factor against aggressive affect and self-efficacy for violence. The sample consisted of 127 African Americans aged 18 to 22, of which only the 76 men were investigated in this study. Aggressive affect significantly increased after viewing a movie clip with an African American, aggressive model but not after viewing a movie clip with a Caucasian, aggressive model. There were no significant results found concerning self-efficacy for aggression. There was no relationship between race centrality and aggressive affect.

Book excerpt: The scientific evidence does not support the notion that TV and film violence cause aggression in children or in anyone else. So argues Jonathan Freedman, based on his findings that far fewer than half of the scientific studies have found a causal connection between exposure to media violence and aggression or crime. In fact, Freedman believes that, taken to a more controversial extreme, the research could be interpreted as showing that there is no causal effect of media violence at all. Media Violence and its Effect on Aggression offers a provocative challenge to the accepted norms in media studies and psychology. Freedman begins with a comprehensive review of all the research on the effect of violent movies and television on aggression and crime. Having shown the lack of scientific support for the prevailing belief that media violence is connected to violent behaviour, he then explains why something that seems so intuitive and even obvious might be incorrect and goes on to provide plausible reasons why media violence might not have bad effects on children. He contrasts the supposed effects of TV violence on crime with the known effects of poverty and other social factors, and discusses the difference between television advertising, which, he argues, does have an effect, and violent programs, which do not. Freedman concludes by noting that in recent years television and films have been as violent as ever and violent video games have become more and more popular, yet during this period there has been a dramatic decrease in violent crime. He argues that this makes it highly implausible that media violence causes aggression or crime.

Book excerpt: In previous investigations, different forms of violence have been found to have a significant effect on the aggressive behavior displayed by adolescents and young children. This study examined the effects of exposure to media violence on a sample of adjudicated male and female youth. Research participants consisted of 127 local high school students within the Public School System in Central Florida, ages 14-18. Paper and pencil measures such as the Exposure to Violent Media Questionnaire, Aggression Questionnaire, Legitimacy of Aggression Questionnaire, Lifetime History of Aggression, and the Children's Interview on Community Violence, were given to participants. Exposure to media violence correlated with significant enhanced aggressive thoughts and behavior in males. Trends were found on the Aggression Questionnaire, and Lifetime History of Aggression, which suggested that the results were not statistically significant, and there were no differences among the measures. By reducing the exposure to media violence, children and adolescents may reduce their outward aggressive behavior towards others. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
