Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV), once considered a private issue, has become a social and legal concern. IPV is the establishment of power and control within an intimate relationship through a pattern of coercive behaviors that includes physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse. Whereas the national awareness of the impact of IPV on women has grown in recent years, recognition of the effects of exposure to such violence on preschool children has lagged behind. Although the exact number is unknown, estimates suggest between 3.3 million to 18 million children witness IPV in the U.S. annually (Carlson, 1984; Jaffe, Wolfe, & Wilson, 1990; McDonald, Jouriles, Ramisetty-Mikler, Caetano, & Green, 2006; Spaccarelli, Sandler, & Rosa, 1994; Straus, 1992). The immediate effects on children can include fear, distress, anger, depression, and deficits in social skills. The results of the present study found that preschool children are impacted by exposure to IPV. Preschool children exposed to domestic violence display externalizing and internalizing behaviors, deficits in regulating their emotions, and cognitive deficits (Huth-Bocks et al., 2001; Jouriles et al., 2008; Litrownik et al., 2003; Ybarra et al., 2007). Preschool children can also develop posttraumatic symptoms in respond to the violence witnessed in the home (Levendosky et al., 2002; Levendosky et al., 2003; Zerk et al., 2009). The results of the present study also indicate that the younger the age of first exposure to IPV, the greater the problems in adjustment. Some of the problems exhibited are aggression and anxiety/depression. In addition, preschool children are impacted by how the mother responds to IPV. Parenting appears to be compromised when mothers are experiencing depression and PTSD symptoms. Therefore, the clinical implication for this research is early intervention to screen for the presence of exposure to IPV and to develop services to children who have been exposed to IPV.

Book excerpt: Children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) experience a wide variety of short-term social adjustment and emotional difficulties. While children are affected at all ages, less is known about the long-term consequences of IPV exposure at younger ages. This study examined the impact of early IPV exposure (i.e., between birth and age 3), IPV exposure over time, and IPV severity on the development of children's prosocial skills and aggressive behavior. Additionally, the effect of maternal warmth and maternal depression over time on IPV-exposed children's social behavior trajectories was examined. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), a national longitudinal study designed to assess outcomes of children who have been abused or neglected. Latent growth curve modeling was used while controlling for maternal demographics, maternal substance use, household characteristics, and child maltreatment. The more frequently children were exposed between birth and the age of 3 the more aggressive behavior problems were exhibited by age 8 compared to nonexposed children. When examining IPV exposure across time, IPV exposure was associated with increases in preschool age children's aggressive behavior and decreases in school age children's prosocial skills. Longer durations of exposure to severe forms of IPV were significantly related to higher aggressive behavior over time. Higher levels of maternal warmth were a significant predictor of increased prosocial skills over time while maternal depression was a significant indicator of increased aggressive behavior over time. Understanding the developmental period of when IPV exposure has the greatest effect on children's development may provide insight into when to intervene before problem behaviors become more pervasive. Results from this study suggest that assessments conducted by social worker clinicians need to account for the child's age when IPV exposure began and the nature of exposure (i.e., duration and level of severity). Interventions should be targeted towards those children who are exposed when they are 3 years or younger, who have experienced longer duration or severe forms of IPV exposure, and who have mothers who are currently depressed or exhibiting low levels of maternal warmth.

For many years children were not recognized as having detrimental consequences of IPV. Now that it is recognized that children suffer from the negative effects of IPV, it is important to examine how and when exposure to IPV is associated with the development of children. This study uses the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study to examine the socioemotional development of children exposed to IPV from birth to 9 years old. Using structural equation modeling, latent growth curve models were conducted to analyze internalizing and externalizing problems at age 3, 5, and 9. Children who were exposed to IPV, whether it be a violent and controlling or a controlling only relationship, had more internalizing and externalizing problems. Also, the earlier and longer the child was exposed to IPV, the more socioemotional problems the child had. Identifying the critical time period of externalizing and internalizing problems for children exposed to IPV is crucial for intervention techniques and child victims' long-term development. Every child should be able to develop to their fullest potential, by targeting intervention efforts at those critical time points, it could allow for children to live up to their full promise.
