The participant was one third-grade student who was diagnosed with dyslexia. She required skills to overcome the decoding and word recognition challenges that prevented her from comprehending texts. Over the course of four weeks, the participant attended 55-minute sessions in which areas of reading comprehension, especially inference making, were assessed. She also received extensive modeling and guided practice in various comprehension strategies. Results for the study show that explicit instruction of prediction and inference making increases overall reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: There is ample evidence that inference generation skill directly contributes to reading comprehension, as well as evidence that struggling readers make fewer inferences than proficient readers. This experimental study examined the effectiveness of a small-group inference instruction intervention on the inference generation and reading comprehension of struggling readers in Grades 6 and 7. The sample comprised 78 students randomly assigned to a small-group inference instruction intervention condition (n = 39) or a business-as-usual comparison condition in which students received computer-delivered English language arts instruction via individualized learning software (n = 39). In the intervention condition, small groups of 3 to 6 students participated in 24, 40-minute sessions. Instruction focused on both text-connecting inferences (e.g., pronoun reference, inferring word meaning from context) and gap-filling inferences (i.e., inferences that require students to integrate their knowledge about the world with information in text). Treatment effects were estimated using multiple regression analyses. Results indicate that membership in the Making Inferences treatment condition statistically significantly predicted higher outcome score for the standardized measure of general reading comprehension skill, the GMRT Reading Comprehension subtest (d = 0.60), but not for any of the three measures of inference skill. Phonemic decoding at pretest was a statistically significant moderator of intervention effects on the GMRT-RC, with treatment effects increasing as students’ levels of phonemic decoding skill increased. Book excerpt: This study examined explicit instruction of aspect and inference to determine whether or not students' abilities to make correct reading inferences improved. This study involved two 5th grade boys using specially designed narratives containing an antecedent either using the perfective or imperfective aspect. A question at the end of the narrative prompted the subjects to make an inference. After the pretest, the subjects participated in several lessons on the meaning of a verb's aspect and making inferences, using an explicit comprehension model of instruction. The posttest, delayed posttest, and interviews were conducted after instruction. The results showed that the number of inferences made improved, but neither student was likely to draw more than one inference from narratives containing the imperfective aspect. This showed that despite instruction, the students most likely did not fully understand the meaning of the aspects taught and how aspect can affect the inference they make.

Participants were taught the comprehension strategy "questioning" through the process of direct modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. Data were collected throughout the duration of the study, and the effectiveness of explicit direct instruction of questioning was determined. Findings suggested that by explicitly teaching questioning as a comprehension strategy, students became more engaged with text and increased their instructional reading level. This study encouraged me to continue to implement best practices in teaching comprehension strategies to ensure the success of students at Prairie Ridge Elementary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
