Book The Effects of Embedded Questions on the Reading Comprehension of Second Grade Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders ADS

Download or read book The Effects of Embedded Questions on the Reading Comprehension of Second Grade Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders ADS written by Lindsay Sessor and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The ability to comprehend what one has read is a critical skill not only for academic achievement but also for daily independent functioning. This study examines the effectiveness of embedded questions, for three elementary students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in order to improve reading comprehension performance. An alternating treatments design was employed in order to examine the effects of oral embedded questions, written embedded questions, and no embedded questions on reading comprehension assessed by a 7-item posttest consisting of wh- questions (e.g., who, what, where, how, etc) following the presentation of an appropriate leveled reading passage . Findings indicated that neither oral nor written embedded questions did not consistently improve reading comprehension for any of the participants. Repeated reading and feedback were implemented for two of the three participants due to variability of performance. However, results show that there may be some evidence supporting the use of repeated reading and feedback to improve comprehension. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed.

Book Perceptions Regarding Comprehension and Self efficacy in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Perceptions Regarding Comprehension and Self efficacy in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Kevin Charles Hogge and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this embedded multiple case study was to explore perceptions of reading comprehension interventions in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at public schools within the Commonwealth of Virginia and to discover common themes and strategies that help students with ASD. The sample pool consisted of approximately 62 students. The sample size included nine participants chosen through a purposeful sampling method relying on a maximum variation procedure. The research question focused on the lived experiences of students with ASD and their perceptions regarding reading comprehension and self-efficacy. The theory guiding this study was Bandura's theory of self-efficacy; that is, as students begin to believe in their abilities to complete tasks, they will see greater academic success. Data collection included interviews, direct observations, and document analysis. Data was entered in NVivo 12 for Windows to provide consistency in data input. Coding extracted major themes and consistencies in the research data. Through in-depth data collection and data analysis, I discovered five major themes in my study. Students with ASD experienced frustration with reading, fear of asking for assistance, difficulty understanding complex reading skills, career readiness anxiety, and lack of self-efficacy. Participants' frustrations with reading focused on reading comprehension and decoding skills. The fear of asking for assistance concentrated on embarrassment in asking for help and the lack of time for additional assistance. The difficulty in understanding complex reading skills circled around figurative language and reading connections. Career readiness anxiety regarded reading in the workplace and the possibility for advancement. Lastly, the lack of self-efficacy was highlighted by feelings of inadequacy and negative feelings about abilities.

Book Investigating the Effect of Graphic Advance Organizers on the Reading Comprehension of Secondary age Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Investigating the Effect of Graphic Advance Organizers on the Reading Comprehension of Secondary age Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Aron Nathan Weinberg and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension interventions that target students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have traditionally included explicit instruction in the delivery of the intervention in order to compensate for the well-documented executive function difficulties experienced by many individuals within this population. A handful of single- case studies (n=9) within this literature have used supplementary graphic organizers (GOs), as one component of a larger treatment package, to successfully help students with ASD comprehend text more readily. The independent effect of a GO on the reading comprehension of individuals with ASD therefore remains untested. In this dissertation study, which employed single-case research methodology, five secondary students with ASD completed a reading comprehension intervention that featured graphic advance organizers (GAOs) with limited pre-training or instructional support provided by the implementer. Results indicated that some participants may be able to effectively use GAOs independently to increase their comprehension of expository texts. Findings, limitations, and implications are presented.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
