Differentiating writing instruction for high achieving minority students in the early grades could enhance the likelihood they will be identified for gifted education. Since gifted children (both identified and unidentified) are often served in the general classroom, teachers should provide educational experiences that are challenging, appropriate, and promote the mastery of new skills (Smutny, Walker, & Meckstroth, 1997). Differentiated instruction can provide gifted students with enriched curricula specific to their needs (Colangelo & Davis, 2003; Van Tassel-Baska, 2003). One area where differentiated instruction could be useful is with the gap in writing between African American students and their non-culturally diverse peers (Ford & Harris, 1999; NCES, 2003). Research indicates that improving the fluency and vocabulary of written expression will positively affect it qualitatively (Minner, Prater, Sullavan, & Gwaltney, 1989). A range of strategies have been suggested in the research, including repeated writings (Marchisan & Alber, 2001), counting of total words (Deno, Marston, & Mirkin, 1982), and self-monitoring (Graham, Harris, & Mason, 2005). Rubric scores were often used as additional measures in studies (Graham, et al., 2005; Tindal & Hasbrouck, 1991; Tindal & Parker, 1991). This study examined the effects of self-counting and synonym lists on increasing the length and improving the quality of writing. Five high-achieving urban African American first grade students participated in this study. Twice a week during the 12-week study, students wrote a writing sample from a prompt. Only the first three minutes of writing were used for data collection. Students were moved into Self-counting when the number of different words written showed a stable or downward trend. Students in this intervention self-counted the number of different and total words written in addition to viewing a graph of their different word counts throughout the study. When data indicated, students moved into the second intervention, Self-counting Plus Synonym List. Generalization probes were written by students under all three conditions to evaluate changes in rubric scores. Results demonstrate that different interventions increased scores for different students, supporting differentiated instruction for high-achieving students. Four out of five students a) averaged more different words, b) averaged more total words, and c) made no meaningful difference in rubric scores in each intervention. The results, along with the limitations, are analyzed and discussed.
