Book The Effects of Depth Jumps on University Football Players

Download or read book The Effects of Depth Jumps on University Football Players written by David Joe Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of depth jumps as a method of increasing squat maximums, vertical jump and 40-yard dash. A sub-problem was looked at to determine how individuals perceived their knees felt. Subjects utilized in this investigation consisted of 29 male football players at Eastern Washington University. Each individual was given a Sargent jump-reach test. The subjects were then divided into three groups based on pre-test vertical jump scores. Work-out routines were randomly selected for each group; Group 1 (depth jump & vertical jump), Group 2 (vertical jump), and Group 3 (control). Group one's work-out consisted of three thirty second sets of depth jumps using two 24 inch high boxes with a one inch pad on the floor. They also performed 3 X 15 seconds of continuous vertical jumps. Group two performed 3 X 15 seconds of vertical jumps. Group three performed only the required weight lifting program that groups one and two also did. The subjects worked out two times a week for nine weeks during spring quarter. Three 2 X 3 ANCOVA's were used to determine if there was significance between the three experimental groups in the vertical jump, squat maximum and forty-yard dash. No significance was found at the .05 alpha level for any of the three variables. A one-way ANOVA was used to determine the significance between the groups as to their perception of how their knees felt. With DF = 2 and F = 3.44, there was significance at the .05 alpha level. With this, it appears that Group 1 perceived their knees not to feel as good as Groups 2 and 3 throughout the study. This data would tend to make one wonder if the negative effects out-weigh the benefits of a plyometrics program. Participating in a training program twice a week for nine weeks without any significant improvements, would lead one to think that the time could be spent working on some other type of training. Only further research could answer this question"--Document.
