Book excerpt: Author's Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of carbohydrate supplementation in liquid and bean form on performance, perceived exertion and gastrointestinal response during repeated maximal effort sprints in collegiate female swimmers. On three separate occasions, 7 days a part 16 female (19.87±1.08 yr) collegiate competitive swimmers performed 6 x 100 yard maximal sprint on a 6-minute interval. The participants consumed a total of 0.36 g/kg/BW of CHO in for the form of a sport jellybean, CHO liquid or placebo liquid. The 0.36 g/kg/BW of CHO was divided into 5 portions so the participants consumed the supplement after each 100-yard sprint. Rated perceived exertion, gut discomfort, gut fullness and timed performance was recorded after each 100 yards. Average gut fullness ratings were found to be significantly higher in the CHO liquid (p = 0.001) and placebo liquid (p p = .004) and placebo liquid (p .001) than the sport jellybean (5.37±1.73 for the CHO liquid, 5.77±1.06 for the placebo liquid, and 3.90±1.67 for the sport jellybean). Additionally, no significant differences were found in the average RPE ratings between the three supplements (p 0.05). No significant difference was found in the average timed performance between the three supplements (p > 0.05). These results suggest that a CHO, in the form of a sport jellybean could be a more appropriate form of CHO to minimize feelings of both gut discomfort and gut fullness during high-intensity training.

Book excerpt: Given their frequent, intense training sessions and competitions, elite collegiate athletes often struggle to adequately fuel for their high energy needs, resulting in a high prevalence of low energy availability (EA) among elite collegiate athletes. In those with low EA, metabolic fuel repartitioning occurs to conserve energy, which, when left unaddressed, can have serious consequences on reproductive and bone health; meanwhile, low EA's impact on training adaptations and athletic performance is less well understood, making this issue one of great importance. Also common among elite collegiate athletes is poor sleep, often attributed to the time demands of balancing academic responsibilities with rigorous training schedules. Inadequate sleep has been found to impact health and appears to impair training responses and athletic performance, although more research is needed to understand the relationship between these variables. Additionally, sleep deprivation is associated with changes in metabolic hormones that are remarkably similar to the changes that occur with metabolic fuel repartitioning in response to low EA, making the relationship between EA, sleep, training responses, and sport performance even more interesting. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the interrelationships between EA, sleep quality, training responses, and sport performance. To do so, this study used WHOOP wearable technology (WHOOP Inc., Boston, MA) to collect data on sleep quality and training (strain, average HR, and maximum HR). Three-day food logs were completed through the MyFitnessPal (Under Armour Inc; Baltimore, MD) app to collect energy intake data. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to quantify body composition, and a 200-yard time trial swim time (TTperf) was used to quantify athletic performance in 26 male and female NCAA Division 1 Swimmers during heavy training. Collection of EA was matched to sleep and training responses, but not matched to TTperf. Sleep measures were also recorded on the day preceding TTperf. Pearson correlations were utilized to determine relationships between variables when no sex effects persisted, whereas linear regression analyses were utilized to control for sex-differences. In all swimmers, there was a trend toward a correlation between EA and sleep duration hours (R=0.33; p=0.06). EA positively correlated with REM hours (R=0.64; p=0.001). When controlling for sex, EA was a predictor of SWS hours (R^2=0.448; p=0.001). Also in all swimmers, sleep duration hours and sleep debt hours were related to strain (R=-0.85; p=0.01, R=0.35; p=0.045, respectively), and ExHRavg (R=-0.65; p=0.001, R=0.51; p=0.01, respectively). Book excerpt: Elite collegiate athletes commonly have difficulty meeting the caloric requirements to fuel their training and competitive performance due to training at very high intensities for long durations. Unless energy intake is increased to meet caloric expenditure, athletes will experience repercussions that can severely impact health and performance. Heavy training can elicit reductions in energy availability (EA), heart rate variability (HRV), and increase strain, and these variables have all been associated with reductions in performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of wearable technology for use in detection of physiological and psychological variables related to health and performance in elite athletes. This study utilized the WHOOP Performance Optimization system (WHOOP Inc., Boston, MA) wearable device to test whether WHOOP derived measures of HRV, recovery, strain, and sleep in a group of 23 male and female NCAA Division 1 Swimmers (18-22 yr) during the heavy training phase preceding the championship competition were significantly associated with laboratory and or validated measures of metabolic health, performance, and factors predictive of performance. Specifically, measures from the WHOOP were compared to laboratory measures of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and serum total triiodothyronine, a 200-yard performance time trial swim, as well as established surveys assessing stress and recovery (RESTQ-52 Sport, Perceived Stress Scale). Data related to training load, body composition, and within day energy balance were also recorded.
