Book The Effects of Dazomet on Annual Bluegrass Seed Viability

Download or read book The Effects of Dazomet on Annual Bluegrass Seed Viability written by Thomas O. Green and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern regarding creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) putting greens is annual bluegrass (Poa annua) invasion. With methyl bromide fumigation now being highly restricted, alternatives must be investigated to curtail weed seed soil infestations. Currently, dazomet is the only fumigant labeled for annual bluegrass control in turfgrass systems. Therefore, research questions related to dazomet efficacy come to the forefront such as how soil texture and depth of seed bank affect efficacy as well as which application rate is most effective within a soil. A study was designed to garner data as to the depth of soil removal needed to reduce annual bluegrass seedling emergence in a newly renovated putting green. Research was conducted in different seasons, summer and fall, respectively; to evaluate seedling emergence across five soil removal depths in four sampling sites. Cores were collected from four golf courses in southeastern Michigan, subdivided into different soil removal depths, potted in sterile soil media, and established in a growth chamber. Results suggest that excavating soil to a depth of 2.54 cm, or more prudently, 3.81-cm depth could minimize annual bluegrass competition in a creeping bentgrass putting green, e.g., annual bluegrass emergence was observed to be greatest in the upper soil depths (1.27 to 3.81cm) in both seasons with minimal emergence (

Book Annual Bluegrass Emergence from Fraze Mowed Fairway Systems Fumigated with Dazomet

Download or read book Annual Bluegrass Emergence from Fraze Mowed Fairway Systems Fumigated with Dazomet written by Ryan Christopher Bearss and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summers of 2018-19, two trials were conducted at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center in East Lansing, MI to evaluate the viability of fraze mowing cultivation and dazomet fumigation for cool-season fairway renovations. Both trials were conducted on native and sand topdressed (TDS) blocks. In Trial 1 (Rate Study), plots were stripped with fraze mowing cultivation and dazomet was applied either; once at rates of 0, 293.7, or 588.7 kg ha-1 or twice at rates of 146.8 or 293.7 kg ha-1. Plots of Trial 2 (Disturbance Study) were subjected to 0, 15, 50 or 100% fraze mowing surface disturbance and uniformly fumigated with dazomet at 293.7 kg ha-1. Dazomet was incorporated mechanically in either Trial via Tillage or Solid-Tine (ST) cultivation and followed procedures consistent with the fumigant label. 5-days after fumigation, all plots were seeded with creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) [CBG]. In the Rate Study, interval treatments provided the most consistent control of ABG emergence across seasons. Only treatments applied once at 293.7 kg ha-1 failed to yield greater CBG cover than the control. In the Disturbance Study, plots fraze mowed to 100% and cultivated by tillage achieved the greatest ABG control but poorest CBG cover. Across trials, no single treatment provided complete or acceptable control of ABG and fraze mowing cultivation impeded CBG establishment. Fraze mowing cultivation simplified the removal of surface material but did not provide acceptable ABG control at any level of surface disturbance or dazomet treatment applied.

Book Georgia Pest Management Handbook

Download or read book Georgia Pest Management Handbook written by Emily Cabrera and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgia Pest Management Handbook provides current information on selection, application, and safe use of pest control chemicals. This handbook has recommendations for pest control around homes and on pets; for pests of home garden vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals; and for pests of public health interest associated with our homes. Cultural, biological, physical, and other types of control are recommended where appropriate. Pesticide recommendations are based on information on the manufacturer labels and on performance data from research and extension trials at the University of Georgia and its sister institutions. Because environmental conditions, the severity of pest pressure, and methods of application vary widely, recommendations do not imply that performance of pesticides will always be acceptable. This publication is intended to be used only as a guide. Trade and brand names are used only for information. The University of Georgia does not guarantee nor warrant published standards on any product mentioned; nor does the use of a trade or brand name imply approval of any product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable. Always follow the use instructions and precautions on the pesticide label. Book Westcott s Plant Disease Handbook

Download or read book Westcott s Plant Disease Handbook written by R. K. Horst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a compliment to me to be asked to prepare the fourth edition of Westcott's Plant Disease Handbook, and the decision to accept the responsi bility for the fourth edition and now the fifth edition was not taken lightly. The task has been a formidable one. I have always had a great respect professionally for Dr. Cynthia Westcott. That respect has grown considerably with the completion of the two editions. I now fully realize the tremendous amount of effort expended by Dr. Westcott in developing the Handbook. A book such as this is never finished, since one is never sure that everything has been included that should be. I would quote and endorse the words of Dr. Westcott in her preface to the first edition: "It is easy enough to start a book on plant disease. It is impossible to finish it. " This revision of the Handbook retains the same general format contained in the previous editions. The chemicals and pesticides regulations have been updated; a few taxonomic changes have been made in the bacteria, fungi, and mistletoes; the changing picture in diseases caused by viruses and/or viruslike agents has been described. A few new host plants have been added, and many recently reported diseases as well as previously known diseases listed now on new hosts have been included. In addition, photographs have been replaced where possible, and the color photograph section has been retained.

Book Beneficial Co Utilization of Agricultural Municipal and Industrial by Products

Download or read book Beneficial Co Utilization of Agricultural Municipal and Industrial by Products written by Sally L. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-utilization or blending of residuals offers a unique opportunity to develop products with particular characteristics that are able to target specific customer needs. The very notion of deliberately blending by-products suggests that the recycling and beneficial reuse industries are taking a quantitative step forward towards developing products rather than simply reusing residuals. At the same time that this step provides unique opportunities, it also presents unique challenges. The science associated with the beneficial use of one product may not apply when that product is mixed with another residual. Blending of materials may alter the chemistry of the components of the mixture. This may offer additional benefits, as in the case of disease suppression in composts, or present unexpected problems, as the use of lime-stabilized biosolids has done in Maryland. This book consists of the proceedings of the Beltsville Symposium. The organizers of the Symposium attempted to structure a meeting that would outline both the potential benefits of co-utilization as well as concerns. The editors have divided the proceedings into sections that describe the practical basis for co-utilization of residuals as well as the potential benefits. Specific considerations are described. Finally, case studies include descriptions of successful operations and data that detail results of research involving co-utilization materials. Blending of materials for specific objectives needs to be the focus of any successful co-utilization effort. The scientific implications of the mix need to be determined before a product can be used properly.
