Book Cooperative Learning and the Collaborative School

Download or read book Cooperative Learning and the Collaborative School written by Ronald S. Brandt and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperation in the classroom counteracts well-established routines and values that nearly all adults and many educators take for granted. Education remains a fiercely competitive enterprise, and individualistic notions of professionalism predominate. Despite the continued importance of independence, initiative, and personal achievement, today's schools are experimenting with consideration, sharing, collegiality, and commitment to group goals. This volume contains readings from recent editions of "Educational Leadership" on cooperative learning and collaborative schools, beginning with Robert Slavin's introduction and Ronald Brandt's insistence that cooperation is not un-American. The articles in the second section discuss various cooperative learning models, including Team Assisted Individuation, Cooperative integrated Reading and Composition, and Group Investigation. The third section is devoted to implementation of cooperative learning, and the fourth section highlights the idea of schools as caring communities developed through group work. The sixth section provides ideas on how to get started, and the seventh section summarizes controversies among various researchers. The final section presents articles on the collaborative school, focusing on developing teacher collegiality, cooperative professional development, and school improvement efforts. The volume ends with an extensive annotated bibliography divided into nine parts. (MLH)

Each module is a succinct, stand-alone topic that represents every subject found in traditional chapter texts and can be used in any order for maximum flexibility in organizing your course. Each of the book’s eight units of modules begins with a set of four case studies–early childhood, elementary, middle school, and secondary–and ends with “Assess” and “Reflect and Evaluate” questions and activities to encourage comprehension and application of the research and theories presented. The case approach and the extensive pedagogy that support it allows students to constantly see the applications of the theories and research that they are studying in the text.

Book A Study of Cooperative Learning Effects on Critical Thinking Skills to Improve Academic Achievement

Download or read book A Study of Cooperative Learning Effects on Critical Thinking Skills to Improve Academic Achievement written by Richard Eschman and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper is a study on the effects of the use of cooperative learning strategies on critical thinking activities to raise student achievement. In order to teach students to use the scientific method, it is necessary for them to develop the thinking skills required to go through all the steps. These skills are high level thinking skills such as, questioning, hypothesizing, inferring, analyzing, and paraphrasing. Each of these skills can be increased if the students learn how to communicate and work with each other. Cooperative Learning methodology teaches students the social skills needed to work together without sacrificing the importance of academic content. The subjects for this study were juniors and seniors in four Physical Science classes. One class was taught using cooperative learning instructional strategies while the other classes were taught using the traditional lecture style of teaching. The effectiveness of the two instructional methods was determined by evaluating worksheets, labs, and overall grades of both groups over a period of one semester. The results indicate that the use of cooperative learning as an instructional tool increases stuents' critical thinking skills which in turn leads to higher student achievement."--Author's abstract.

Book Handbook of Classroom Management

Download or read book Handbook of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Book excerpt: Promote cooperative learning more effectively by transforming your classroom into a learning community. Experienced K–12 educators Paul J. Vermette and Cynthia L. Kline offer their Dual Objective Model as a tool for improving your students’ academic achievement and problem-solving skills, while encouraging their social and emotional development. You’ll discover how to: assign meaningful tasks that require students to rely on one another; build efficient teams, purposefully monitor group dynamics, and assess group projects effectively; engage students in schoolwork while developing crucial career and life skills; motivate students to see the importance of personal and group responsibility; maximize the benefits of student diversity in your classroom. Emphasizing teamwork, persistence, communication, self-regulation, and empathy in a complex, diverse, and technological setting, these strategies can be easily incorporated into any curriculum. The book is filled with vignettes and sample exercises to help you apply the ideas to your own classroom.
