Book excerpt: Although current categories of learning disabilities include as specific disabilities calculation and mathematical problem solving [see IDEA reauthorization, 2004, Sec. 300.8(c)(10)], the majority of research focuses on calculation disabilities. Previous studies have shown, however, that deficits in word problem solving difficulties are persistent across the elementary school years even when calculation and reading skills are in the normal achievement range (Swanson et al., 2008). Previous research shows that growth in working memory (WM) is related to growth in word problem solving accuracy for children with math disabilities (MD e.g., Swanson, 2006, Swanson et al., 2008). However, the research is unclear as to the interventions that compensate for WM limitations in children with MD that in turn positively influence performance on problem solving measures. The purpose of this intervention study was to determine whether children with MD improve in problem solving ability as a function of strategy intervention that emphasizes relevant components of word problems. Children with MD and without MD were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: verbal strategies, visual strategies or a combination of both verbal and visual strategies. This study addressed three questions:(1) Do cognitive strategies that direct MD children's attention to relevant components of word problems in the context of distracting or irrelevant information enhance mathematical problem solving accuracy when compared to control conditions? (2) Are visual-spatial strategies in isolation or when combined with verbal strategies more effective than verbal strategies in isolation for children with MD? and (3) Do specific cognitive strategies and increases in WM load (number of irrelevant sentences in word problems) play an independent or interactive role in facilitating solution accuracy and transfer? One hundred and twenty (120) children from grades 2 and 3 in a Southern California public school district participated in this study. The primary findings were: both children with and without MD significantly improved word problem solving accuracy at post-test relative to other conditions, (b) pretest/post-test changes in correctly identifying relevant/irrelevant components mediated the effects of treatment on solution accuracy, (c) transfer (tasks independent of training) occurred on CBM of text word problems, verbal WM and calculation, and (d) individual differences in WM capacity interacted with treatment conditions when predicting overall solution accuracy.

Book excerpt: A recent study, "The Effects of Cognitive Strategy Instruction on Math Problem Solving of Middle School Students of Varying Ability," examined the effectiveness of "Solve It!," a program intended to improve the problem-solving skills of seventh-grade math students. During the program, students are taught cognitive strategies of varying complexity to solve math word problems. The ultimate goal is for students to internalize the strategies and use them automatically during problem solving. For this study, researchers analyzed the math and reading scores of 1,059 students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools to measure the impact of "Solve It!" The study found that the program had no impact on the students' math and reading achievement. The study had high levels of student attrition; however, the samples of students were demonstrated to be equivalent at baseline on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) math and reading scores. Therefore, the research meets What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) group design standards with reservations. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a cognitive- and metacognitive-strategy instruction on the mathematical problem-solving performance and metacognitive experience of 22 seventh- and eighth-grade students with learning disabilities. When solving mathematical word problems, students with learning disabilities typically lack self-regulation processes (Larson & Gerber, 2002) tend to respond impulsively, to use trial and error, and fail to evaluate or verify their solutions (Bryant, Bryant, & Hammermill, 2000). This study used the Metacognitive Experience Survey (MES), two sets of three mathematical-word-problem probes of varying complexity levels, and think-aloud protocols to measure intervention effect. The first research question probed the effect of the intervention on the mathematical-problem-solving performance of the participants as measured by their metacognitive verbalizations collected through think-aloud protocols. Qualitative analysis of the transcripts revealed four emerging themes: students with high metacognition were more successful in performing tasks correctly even when their nonproductive metacognitive verbalizations were above 25.0%; students in the high- and average-metacognition categories successfully solved the 3-step probe, whereas students in the low-metacognition category were not successful in solving the 3-step probe; students in the low-metacognition category used less productive metacognitive verbalizations as the complexity level of the probe increased; and students from all the metacognition categories extensively used cognitive- metacognitive strategies compared with preintervention observations. The second research question probed the intervention effect on the mathematical- problem-solving performance of the participants as measured by the change from pre- to postintervention scores on two sets of three mathematical probes. A dependent-samples t test revealed no strong statistically significant relationships. One weak but statistically significant relationship was found for students' performance on the 1-step probe. There was an increase in the means for the 1-step and 3-step probes from pre- to postintervention. For the 2- and 3-stepstep probes, however, the change from pre- to postintervention was not statistically significant. The third research question probed the effect of the strategy instruction on the metacognitive experience of the participants as measured by the MES. A dependent-samples t test results indicated an increase in the participants' metacognitive experience means from pre- to postintervention but the postintervention mean was not statistically significantly different than the preintervention mean. Notwithstanding that statistically significant changes were not realized across the MES and the mathematical-word-problem probes, important insights were obtained from the think-aloud protocols.

Book excerpt: Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) offers the potential to deliver cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies in mathematical word problem-solving for students with mathematics difficulties. However, there is a lack of commercially available CAI programs with cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies for mathematical word problemsolving that pay particular attention to the critical design features for students with mathematics difficulties. Therefore, empirical evidence regarding the effects of CAI program with cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies on the word problem-solving of students with mathematics difficulties has not been found. Considering the imperative need for a CAI program with cognitive and metacognitive strategies for students with mathematics difficulties, an interactive multimedia software, 'Math Explorer, ' was designed, developed, and implemented to teach one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving skills to students with mathematics difficulties. Math Explorer incorporates: (a) four-step cognitive strategies and corresponding three-step meta-cognitive strategies adapted from the research on cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies, and (b) instruction, interface, and interaction design features of CAI identified as crucial for successful delivery of cognitive and metacognitive strategies for students with mathematics difficulties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Math Explorer, which was designed to be a potential tool to deliver cognitive and meta-cognitive strategy instruction in one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving. Three research questions guided this study: (a) To what extent does the use of Math Explorer affect the accuracy performance of students with mathematics difficulties in grades 2-3 on computer-based tasks with one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving?, (b) To what extent does the use of Math Explorer generalize to the accuracy performance of students with mathematics difficulties in grades 2-3 on paper/pencil-based tasks with one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving?, and (c) To what extent does the use of Math Explorer maintain the accuracy performance of students with mathematics difficulties in grades 2-3 on computer- and paper/pencilbased tasks with one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving? A multiple probe across subjects design was used for the study. Four students with mathematics difficulties participated in the pre-experimental (i.e., introduction; screening test; and computer training I) and experimental (i.e., baseline, computer training II, intervention, and follow-up) sessions over an 18-week period. Each week of the intervention phase, the students received an individual 20- to 30-minute Math Explorer intervention, at most, five days. After each intervention, they took the 10-minute computer- or paper/pencil-based tests developed by the researcher. The intervention phase for each student lasted five to seven weeks. Two weeks after termination of the intervention phase, their accuracy performance on the computer- and paper/pencil-based tests were examined during the follow-up phases. The findings of the study revealed that all four of the students were able to use the cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies to solve the addition and subtraction word problems and improved their accuracy performance on the computer-based tests. Their improved accuracy performance found on the computer-based tests was successfully transferred to the paper/pencil-based tests. About two weeks after termination of the intervention phase, except for one student who had many absences and behavioral problems during the extended intervention phase, the three students successfully maintained their improved accuracy performance during the follow-up phase. Taken together, the findings of the study clearly provide evidence that Math Explorer is an effective method for teaching one-step addition and subtraction word problem-solving skills to students with mathematics difficulties and suggest that the instruction, interface, and interaction design features of CAI program is carefully designed to produce successful mathematical performance of students with mathematics difficulties. Limitations of the research and implications for practice and future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: Online learning provides customized instruction with high flexibility and accessibility, but research into the delivery of online interventions for students with disabilities remains scarce. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of fraction intervention that pair virtual manipulatives with instructional lessons featuring explicit instruction in synchronous online learning for fifth grade students with mathematics learning disabilities (MLD). A multiple probe baseline design across subjects was employed for the study. Three fifth-grade students with MLD received explicit instruction in synchronous online learning via video conferencing programs. During the intervention, students received the 15 fraction lessons using virtual manipulatives (VMs) in synchronous online learning environment. The participants’ percentages of correct answers on the researcher-developed probe were measured across baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. After the intervention, the participants completed a social validity questionnaire which examined their perceptions of the online intervention using VMs. The findings of the study showed that students' performance improved when the intervention was introduced, and that there was a functional relationship between the fraction intervention and students’ accuracy in solving problems on equivalent fractions. Specifically, the average performance levels across all participants increased from the baseline to the intervention phase (by 18.33% to 20%) with high effect sizes (PND of 80%-100%, NAP of 0.94-1.00, and Tau-U of 0.88-1.00). Book excerpt: Recent intervention studies directed to improve problem solving accuracy in children with math difficulties (MD) have found support for teaching cognitive strategies. This study addresses the question: What role does working memory capacity (WMC) play in strategy outcomes for children with MD? Four prediction models can be applied to strategy training outcomes for children with MD: (a) WMC as a limiting factor, (b) basic skills, (c) general resource, and (d) compensatory. The limiting WMC factor model suggests that children with lower WMC are less likely to benefit from strategy conditions than children with relatively higher WMC. Thus, children with MD vary in their responsiveness to strategy instruction and this is predicated on their WMC. In contrast, the basic skills model suggests that if declarative knowledge is intact (e.g., reading comprehension, and computational knowledge are in the average range), strategy instruction provides a helpful procedure to solve word problems without making demands on WMC. Participants were comprised of 146 third grade children from public school classrooms in the southwest United States. Children were drawn from 22 3rd grade classrooms. Children in the treatment conditions were provided instruction in small groups during math time and were instructed in a class or library in the same school setting. All children in the study participated with their peers in their home rooms on tasks and activities related to the district wide math school curriculum. Each experimental treatment condition included 20 scripted lessons administered over 8 weeks. Each lesson was 30 minutes in duration and was administered three times a week in small groups of 3 to 5 children. The criterion measures used to assess treatment effects were word problems from the Comprehensive Math Abilities Test (CMAT), arithmetic problems from the WRAT-3, and recall from an Operation Span measure. The results showed a significant WMC x treatment interaction across all criterion measures. In general, the results indicated that WMC played an important role in post-test performance outcomes, especially for the strategy conditions that included diagramming (visual-only condition). The intervention package was comprised of a graphic organizer, the K-N-W-S, video models of the researcher teaching the strategy to a student avatar from a virtual simulated classroom, TeachLivE[trade mark sign], and daily word problems for students to practice the strategy. The researcher used a quasi-experimental group design with a treatment and a control group to determine the impact of the intervention. Students were assessed on their performance via a pretest and posttest. Analyses of data were conducted on individual test items to assess patterns in performance by mathematical word problem type. The effects of the intervention on SWD, students with ASD, and students without disabilities varied widely between groups as well as amongst individual students, indicating a need for further studies on the effects of mathematics strategy instruction on students with varying needs and abilities.
