Book excerpt: Research into the use of closed-captioning has provided exciting evidence into the possibilities of its usefulness as a literacy tool. Although previous studies have shown the efficacy of closed-captioning as a tool that can assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing, those learning a second language, and hearing students, the existing scholarship lacks important information regarding closed-captioning and its impact on oral reading fluency. Previous scholars have proven that CC can assist all students on word recognition, vocabulary, and reading comprehension; however, there is a dearth of new research focusing on low socioeconomic students from rural communities. This quantitative, quasi-experimental, comparative study explores this missing research by examining the effects that closed-captioning television could have on the oral reading fluency of elementary children living in poverty. 2nd grade students from a Title I school in the Mississippi Delta were assigned to two different groups: the treatment group participated in viewing the Arthur video series with captions, while the control group participated in viewing the same videos without captions. Pretests and posttests were given using Reading Curriculum Based Measures from Aimsweb. The results of the ANCOVA showed no statistical differences between the two groups; however, the study did uncover a specific need for further studies on how closed-captioning can impact the literacy of children living in poverty.

Book excerpt: Recent legislation allowing educational agencies to use Response to Intervention (RTI) in determining whether a child has a specific learning disability, coupled with a focus on large-scale testing and accountability resulted in the increasing use of curriculum based measurement (CBM) as a tool for understanding students' progress towards state standards, particularly in reading through the use of oral reading fluency measures. Extensive evidence of oral reading fluency's predictability of reading comprehension exists, but little research on differential effects across racial, gender, and socioeconomic subgroups is available. This study investigated racial, gender, and socioeconomic bias in DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DIBELS ORF) probes predictive and concurrent relationship with MAP reading comprehension scores for African American and Caucasian students. Participants were 834 second through fifth grade students in a school district located in a southeastern US state. The dataset consisted of student fall and spring DIBELS ORF scores and spring MAP reading comprehension scores. Concurrent correlation results between spring DIBELS ORF and MAP reading comprehension scores were moderate to large and statistically significant across all grades and demographic groups; however, correlations between fall DIBELS ORF and MAP reading comprehension scores were generally weak. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to examine the best variable, or combination of variables, in predicting MAP reading comprehension scores. Models differed for each grade level; however, spring DIBELS ORF scores were always included, whether alone or in combination with demographic variables, in the best prediction model. Potthoff's procedure was used to simultaneously test for slope and intercept differences among regression equations to determine if DIBELS ORF scores from fall and spring differentially predicted MAP reading comprehension scores across demographic groups. Nine of 24 simultaneous contrasts demonstrated a significant effect; seven were related to race, one was related to gender, and one was related to socioeconomic status. Racial bias in predicting MAP reading comprehension performance from spring DIBELS ORF was found. Differential prediction among gender and SES groups was not consistent indicating little to no practical significance. Results are discussed in the context of practical implications of differential validity, both predictive and concurrent, and potential impact on disproportionality.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is a reciprocal relationship between comprehension and fluency during reading. The notion that oral reading fluency can facilitate reading comprehension is well established in the research literature on the development of reading comprehension. However, more recent models have questioned the unidirectionality of this relationship and have suggested that reading comprehension may increase fluency through reading rate. This hypothesis was examined via analyses of second grade students2 oral reading of connected texts. Four previewing conditions which isolated lexical effects, comprehension effects, and prosody effects on oral reading fluency were manipulated in an experiment and the effects on students2 passage reading times and prosody were evaluated. Students who were on-level readers were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions consisting of word preview (lexical factor), listening preview (prosody and comprehension factor), summary preview (comprehension factor) and no preview. Following the preview, students were asked to read passages aloud. Analyses of Covariance were performed to test the effects of lexical priming, comprehension priming and prosodic modeling on oral reading fluency as measured in correct words per minute (CWPM) and prosodic reading, while controlling for students overall achievement in reading as measured by the STAR-R score. The results showed significant differences in CWPM favouring the listening preview and summary preview over the no-preview condition for students at lower levels of fluency performance. The results are discussed in relation to theories of reading that highlight the role of comprehension and fluency in the integration of information during reading.

Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of Read Naturally, a research-based intervention which utilizes repetitive reading, with 10 first and second grade students considered at risk or some risk in oral reading fluency (ORF) (Ihnot & Ihnot, 1996). The researcher utilized a Response to Intervention (Rtl) Model over a 4-week, 2-month, and 6-month period. Data were collected using Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS®) and pre-and post-scores from Read Naturally (Good & Kaminski, 2002; Ihnot & Ihnot, 1996). Historical data were also used to measure the words read per minute in Group A and Group B in the pre-test. ORF data were examined to ascertain responsiveness or non-responsiveness to the intervention for each student. Collected data were used to determine whether a student had a specific learning disability (SLD). Quantitative data suggested that implementing Read Naturally over a 2-month and 6-month period increased ORF skills. Student inconsistent attendance and time over the 4-week period resulted in inconclusive data. The researcher emphasized the importance of fidelity of instruction, on-going professional development, and time for collaboration amongst educators. The researcher argued that Rtl should be used in the process of determining if a student has a SLD. She focused on early intervention utilizing a preventative model instead of the discrepancy model, or psycho-educational assessments, which focus on qualification for special education.
