Book excerpt: Because of increasing antibiotic resistance, stronger antibiotics are reserved for serious active infection, paving the way for a greater use of herbal antibiotics. This book helps dentists in implementing safe and effective natural medicine therapies to complement the current practice guidelines. Oral diseases continue to be a major health problem world-wide. Oral health is integral to general well-being and relates to the quality-of-life that extends beyond the functions of the craniofacial complex. The standard Western medicine has had only limited success in the prevention of periodontal disease and in the treatment of a variety of oral diseases. The dentist needs to be more informed regarding the use, safety and effectiveness of the various traditional medicines and over-the-counter products. Herbal extracts have been used in dentistry for reducing inflammation, as antimicrobial plaque agents, for preventing release of histamine and as antiseptics, antioxidants, antimicrobials, antifungals, antibacterials, antivirals and analgesics. They also aid in healing and are effective in controlling microbial plaque in gingivitis and periodontitis and thereby improving immunity. The 26 chapters in this unique book explore all the measures to utilize the natural oral care obtained from plants, animals and mineral drugs for dental care.

Materials and Methods: Sixteen dental students in the final year participated in this study (2 females and 14 males) aged 22–23 years (mean 22.5 years). A double blind study was carried out by measuring plaque index, modified gingival index and bleeding index pre–treatment and post–treatment with the two mouth rinses (nut meg and chlorhexidine). The same volunteers were participated in the two test periods and each period lasted 5 days with a wash out twice daily. Deterioration rate for each parameter was derived and used ass a unit of analysis. Results: The new mouth rinse (nut meg extract) had a significant anti–plaque and anti–inflammatory effects (measured by reduction in bleeding index), which was nearly equivalent to the anti–plaque and anti–inflammatory effects of chlorhexidine. No significant difference was noticed between post–treatment group (p > 0.05) of the two mouth rinses regarding plaque and bleeding indices. Conclusion: The nut meg extract mouth rinse had anti–inflammatory effect which encourage its use in dentistry as a new mouth rinse for the treatment of gingivitis. Key Words: Nut meg, herbal extract, anti–inflammatory effect.

Abstract: Background: Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the most effective antiseptic mouthwash known and yet, side effects such as tooth discolorations and bitter taste exist. A new product of CHX with an anti-discoloration system (ADS) was supposed to minimize these side effects while maintaining the antiseptic effects. The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of the CHX with and without an ADS on stains, plaque accumulation and gingivitis development. Material and Methods This double blinded RCCT included 26 healthy dental students. After a preparatory period (3 weeks) of professional prophylaxis and optimal tooth brushing, the participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Group P (Placebo), Group T1 (0.12% CHX without ADS) and Group T2 (0.12% CHX with ADS). During 3 weeks of abolished oral hygiene, the participants were asked to rinse with a mouthwash twice daily. Allocation was concealed until after the baseline examination. The clinical parameters were assessed on Days 0, 7, 14 and 21 and included the Discoloration Index (DI), the Plaque Index (PII) and Gingival Index (GI). Results All 26 participants completed the study with good compliance. At baseline, there were no significant differences for any parameters between any of the groups. Throughout the study, there were no significant differences in mean DI, PII or GI between group T2 and group P. However, significant differences in mean DI between group T2 and group T1 on Day 14 (0.190.15 vs. 0.870.56, p=0.007) and on Day 21 (0.210.17 vs. 1.130.59, p=0.001) were noted. Also, the mean PII between group T2 and group T1 on Day 7 (0.890.40 vs. 0.130.09, pConclusions CHX with ADS appeared to be effective in preventing stain on teeth. However, the efficacy of preventing plaque accumulation and gingivitis development was greatly hampered by the addition of ADS. In fact, CHX mouthwash with ADS showed no superior effect over placebo on maintenance of oral hygiene or prevention of gingivitis. DOI: 10.5353/th_b4839518 Subjects: Chlorhexidine Gingivitis

Book Subgingival Irrigation of Tea Tree Oil in Chronic Periodontitis

Download or read book Subgingival Irrigation of Tea Tree Oil in Chronic Periodontitis written by Anupama Rao and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important goal of periodontal therapy is to reduce or eliminate subgingival microorganisms associated with periodontal disease and to maintain periodontal health. Current treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis is directed at disruption of plaque maturation and /or reduction of bacterial load, which usually includes professional and homecare mechanical methods for removal of plaque. Irrigation at chair side with an antimicrobial agent gained favour with understanding that mechanical debridement of deep pockets is often incomplete. The rationale for adding irrigation with an antimicrobial agent at chair side after scaling and root planing is based on the assumption that bacteria left behind during mechanical debridement could be eradicated by an antimicrobial solution applied into the pocket and a better outcome could be achieved. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of periodic sub gingival irrigation of Tea Tree Oil and Chlorhexidine digluconate mouth rinses as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on clinical parameters and to study the changes in pocket microbiota
