Book The Effects of Broken down Focus of Attention Instructions on Volleyball Setting Performance of Skilled and Novice Players

Download or read book The Effects of Broken down Focus of Attention Instructions on Volleyball Setting Performance of Skilled and Novice Players written by Danilo Gomes de Arruda and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies have shown advantage of external over internal focus of attention (FOA) for motor learning and performance. However, the FOA effect became inconsistent when factors such as task complexity, expertise, individual preference, and performance measurement are considered. For complex motor skills like volleyball setting, broken-down FOA instructions are often given to facilitate skill acquisition and performance, and it remained unknown whether internal and external FOA instructions would impact performance of skilled and novice players differently. Thirty-two novice (n=16) and skilled (n=16) players were asked to perform a targeted volleyball setting task without (control) and with broken-down FOA instructions (internal and external). Both movement outcomes and inter-joint coordination were analyzed. The results supported previous literature on motor expertise showing that skilled players outperformed novice players with superior movement outcomes due to their ability to maintain an intermediate coordination pattern and functional variability of inter-joint coordination prior to the ball contact. The FOA effect on inter-joint coordination was highly idiosyncratic with no congruent pattern could be detected. Although FOA instructions reduced the variability of inter-joint coordination for all players, it was detrimental for skilled players but beneficial for novice players. Future studies should explore the effect of FOAs on motor coordination with a reduced number of attentional cues in both internal and external formats, and the possibility of participants switching between using internal and external cues for motor control.

Book Team Sports Training

Download or read book Team Sports Training written by Javier Mallo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Team Sports Training: The Complexity Model presents a novel approach to team sports training, examining football (soccer), rugby, field hockey, basketball, handball and futsal through the paradigm of complexity. Under a traditional prism, these sports have been analyzed using a deterministic perspective, where the constituent dimensions of the sportsmen were independently examined and treated in isolation. It was expected that the body worked as a perfect machine and, once all the components were maximized, the sportsmen improved their performance. If the same closed recipe was applied to all the players that formed part of the squad, the global team performance was expected to be enhanced. As much as these reductionistic models seem coherent, when contrasted in practice we see that the reality of team sports is far more different from the closed conditions in which they were idealized. Team sports contain variable, heterogeneous and non-linear constrains which require the development of a different logic to organize their training. During the last years, ecological psychology, the dynamical systems theory or the constraints-led approach have opened interesting fields of research from which many conceptual foundations can be applied to team sports. Based in this contemporary framework, the current book presents the study of the players and the teams as complex systems, using coordination dynamics to explain the emergence of the self-organisation episodes that characterize them. In addition, this thinking line provides the reader with the ability to apply all these innovative concepts to their practical training scenarios. Altogether, it is intended to challenge the reader to re-think their training strategy and to develop an original theory and practice of training specific to team sports.

Book excerpt: Volleyball is a sport that involves a number of distinct training and conditioning considerations. As with sports such as cricket, running, owe pitch Softball, any healthy person can participate in a game of volleyball. It is generally safe, being a sport played in a regimented fashion with a limited number of contacts permitted with the ball when delivered across the net, with no physical contact permitted between the participants. It is not necessarily physically demanding in terms of exertion, as there are significant rest intervals between each point scored in a game. Volleyball shares similarities with softball and cricket on another level. To succeed as a volleyball player in elite competition, the athlete must develop a wide range of physical skills. The ideal volleyball player is often tall and very physically limber. All players, irrespective of their height, will be agile, possessed of explosive leaping ability, a superior vertical jump, and balance. Volleyball players invariably possess outstanding reaction time and hand-eye co-ordination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance/Art explores the phenomenology of skilled performance, ranging from athletics to the performing arts, including music, dance and acting. Gallagher reviews a variety of studies concerning different degrees of mindful awareness operative in performance, and builds on the concept of a meshed architecture, suggesting ways to make it more complex and dynamic. He draws on ideas from enactivist embodied cognition about how different types of movement can be meaningful and intelligent and can scaffold learning and problem solving. He also explicates the notion of an empathic mindfulness in performance and develops the idea of a double attunement to explain aesthetic experience in performance, distinguishing the latter from aesthetic experience in the observer/audience perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timeless guide to achieving the state of “relaxed concentration” that’s not only the key to peak performance in tennis but the secret to success in life itself—now in a 50th anniversary edition with an updated epilogue, a foreword by Bill Gates, and an updated preface from NFL coach Pete Carroll “Groundbreaking . . . the best guide to getting out of your own way . . . Its profound advice applies to many other parts of life.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes (“Five of My All-Time Favorite Books”) This phenomenally successful guide to mastering the game from the inside out has become a touchstone for hundreds of thousands of people. Billie Jean King has called the book her tennis bible; Al Gore has used it to focus his campaign staff; and Itzhak Perlman has recommended it to young violinists. Based on W. Timothy Gallwey’s profound realization that the key to success doesn’t lie in holding the racket just right, or positioning the feet perfectly, but rather in keeping the mind uncluttered, this transformative book gives you the tools to unlock the potential that you’ve possessed all along. “The Inner Game” is the one played within the mind of the player, against the hurdles of self-doubt, nervousness, and lapses in concentration. Gallwey shows us how to overcome these obstacles by trusting the intuitive wisdom of our bodies and achieving a state of “relaxed concentration.” With chapters devoted to trusting the self and changing habits, it is no surprise then, that Gallwey’s method has had an impact far beyond the confines of the tennis court. Whether you want to play music, write a novel, get ahead at work, or simply unwind after a stressful day, Gallwey shows you how to tap into your utmost potential. In this fiftieth-anniversary edition, the principles of the Inner Game shine through as more relevant today than ever before. No matter your goals, The Inner Game of Tennis gives you the definitive framework for long-term success.

Book Focus of Attention Influences on Olympic Weightlifting Kinematics

Download or read book Focus of Attention Influences on Olympic Weightlifting Kinematics written by Kyle S. Schutts and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Recent motor control literature has demonstrated that using verbal cues to direct a performer attention externally (i.e. toward movement outcome) enhances motor skill performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate how an athlete focus of attention impacts kinematic performance of the snatch. 12 competitively trained athletes performed blocks of 3 snatch repetitions at 80% 1RM following internal and external instructions. The results indicated that athletes adopting an internal focus increased elbow velocity relative to an external, while an external focus increased horizontal barbell velocity. Internal cues resulted in larger BCH angles at the max height (MH), relative to external, indicating that the athletes are squatting under the barbell too soon. This information adds to the literature suggesting small changes in coaching cues can impact performance significantly. It is recommended that coaches use cues that direct an athlete attention externally, toward the movement outcome, rather than the action itself.

Book Tutorials in Motor Neuroscience

Download or read book Tutorials in Motor Neuroscience written by Jean Requin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-08-31 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on the topic of "Motor Neuroscience" held at the Hotel San 15-24, 1990. The San Bastiano Hotel Bastiano, Calcatoggio (Corsica), September provided a beautiful setting for the ten day ASI in aresort on the west coast of Corsica, near the island's capital city of Ajaccio. The motivation of this ASI originated from the success of an ASI that we organized eleven years ago at Senanque Abbey in the south of France. Our earlier meeting was successful in providing some coherence to a widely scattered literature while providing up to date knowledge on motor control and learning. Our goal for the second ASI was essentially the same. We wanted to appraise the main theoretical ideas that currently characterize the field by bringing together many of the internationally known scientists who are doing much of the contemporary work. It is our hope that these proceedings will provide some conceptual unification to an expanding and diverse literature on motor control.
