Book The Effects of Automobile Head up Display Location for Younger and Older Drivers

Download or read book The Effects of Automobile Head up Display Location for Younger and Older Drivers written by Michael J. Flannagan and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We performed a laboratory study using simulated road scenes and simulated automobile HUDs to examine the effect of HUD location on a driver's ability to discriminate the presence or absence of a pedestrian in or near the path of the vehicle. We showed subjects breif presentations of road scenes with HUDs superimposed at three different positions: 4, 9, or 15 degrees below the horizon. Subjects had to perform two tasks for each presentation, one based on the road scene (presence or absence of a pedestrian) and one based on information in the HUD (direction of a future turn as indicated on a map). Our intent was to assess how HUD location affected a driver's sensitivity to the outside environment while he or she was paying attention to the display. We therefore instructed subjects to emphasize accuracy on the HUD task to the extent that the demands of the two tasks conflicted. Because we believed that there would be important differences between young and old subjects in the effect of HUD location, we included subjects in two age groups, which averaged 21.3 and 66.1 years old, respectively. Performance on the map task was only slightly affected by HUD location, whereas performance on the pedestrian task deteriorated markedly when the HUD was further below the horizon. This is consistent with the instructions for subjects to maintain a high accuracy on the HUD task. The change in performance on the pedestrian task was significantly greater for the older than for the younger subjects. This finding is consistent with other results showing that older people have more difficulty in visual divided-attention tasks. These results provide quantification of the benefits of HUDs in maintaining sensitivity to the outside environment when a driver is attending to vehicle displays. The results suggest that those benefits are significantly greater for older than younger drivers. The larger question of how drivers should distribute attention between the road and vehicle d...

Book Performance and Attentional Abilities of Automobile Drivers with Head up and Head down Displays

Download or read book Performance and Attentional Abilities of Automobile Drivers with Head up and Head down Displays written by Sabrina N. Moran and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Many individuals rely on a navigational system every day to direct them to various destinations, and with the prevalence and danger of distracted driving accidents, it is imperative that we find an effective way to display navigational information to drivers with minimal visual distraction. The lane change test (LCT) was used to measure driving performance, as participants followed lane change cues presented on Road-Signs, a Head-Up Display (HUD), and a Head-Down Display (HDD). A peripheral detection task (PDT) was also implemented on half of the test tracks, with inward moving stimuli from either side of the road, to measure the participants’ ability to detect ecologically-valid stimuli while interacting with the assorted display locations. Driving performance, measured by the mean deviations from a normative path (MDev), was the worst with the HDD and similar with the Road-Signs and HUD. Analyses were completed to investigate a potential effect of age on the ability to interact with the display locations. Younger participants (20-24 years) performed the best with the HUD; while Older participants (26-31 years) performed the best with the Road-Signs. These differences are potentially attributed to the evolution of GPS technologies over the last decade. No significant differences were found in peripheral detection response time or accuracy between the display types or the age groups. As road signs cannot offer specific navigational instructions for all drivers in real-time, HUDs may be a good alternative to the in-vehicle HDD present in modern vehicles, but any in-vehicle interface implementation should be customizable and optional.

This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle, road, sign, and signal lighting are provided to enable drivers to reach their destinations quickly and safely. However, the attention given to how these forms of lighting function is likely to change as new technology is introduced and understanding of ergonomics and human factors improves. Lighting for Driving: Roads, Vehicle, Signs and Signals, Second Edition shows the crucial role lighting plays in road safety and examines how it could be used more effectively. With light-emitting diodes (LEDs) becoming the lighting source of choice for transport planners and vehicle designers, this book integrates information on road lighting, vehicle lighting, signs, and signals in one handy volume. International in scope and updated for this new edition, this book features lighting examples from the USA, the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Lighting in common vehicle types including cars, vans, trucks, and motorcycles is covered as well as the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists to drivers. Coverage extends to road lighting, traffic markings, vehicle designs, and internal lighting and weather conditions. Now fully updated, a final chapter looks at the future of lighting in relation to driving. The book will help the reader to understand how lighting systems on roads and vehicles work by explaining the thinking and scientific reasoning behind various forms of lighting and analyzing their contribution to the driver’s understanding of real and potential road hazards. This book will be an ideal read for ergonomists and engineers engaged in transport and road engineering, transport planners, civil engineers, vehicle designers, and electrical engineers.

Book Drivers Visual Attention to In vehicle Displays

Download or read book Drivers Visual Attention to In vehicle Displays written by Hideki Hada and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Than older drivers. Also, the mean percentage of driving time spent looking at the targets was 3.7 percent higher for younger drivers than for older drivers. The drivers' glance behavior to the visual targets showed that drivers were able to look at the visual targets for at least 0.3 sec in most cases. Therefore, when information needs to be obtained in one glance, it should be designed to be understood within this duration. In addition, the mean percentages fo time that drivers were able to look at the targets can be used for estimating the duration of in-vehicle information presentations based on road type.
