Book The Effects of Auditory and Visual Distracters on the Toleration of Background Noise in Normal Hearing Listeners

Download or read book The Effects of Auditory and Visual Distracters on the Toleration of Background Noise in Normal Hearing Listeners written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of auditory and visual cognitive loads on the preferred background noise levels in normal-hearing listeners. This study investigated the preferable background noise levels (primary task) when normal hearing listeners were presented with auditory and/or visual cognitive distractions (secondary task). It was hypothesized that normal hearing listeners' preferable background noise level would decrease in the presence of either distracter and that the synergistic effect of the two distracters would result in even lower preferable background noise level. Preferable background noise levels were measured on 24 normal-hearing listeners under four conditions. A 2x2 repeated measure ANOVA was performed with auditory and visual distraction (two levels each) as within-subject factors and the test order as a between-subjects factor. The results of the repeated measure ANOVA indicated significant main effect of auditory distraction. None of the interactions between auditory distraction, visual distraction and test order were reported to be significant. The interaction between auditory distraction and test order however, was near significant. Tests between subjects effects revealed no significant effect of test order. Pairwise comparison with Bonferroni correction revealed significantly higher preferable noise levels in the visual task and lower noise level in the auditory task. Results indicated that while attending to a visual cognitive task, normal hearing listeners were willing to put up with a higher background noise level than attending to an auditory task.

Book Reduction of Environmental Distraction to Facilitate Cognitive Performance

Download or read book Reduction of Environmental Distraction to Facilitate Cognitive Performance written by Annelies Vredeveldt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When faced with a difficult task, people often look at the sky or close their eyes. This behavior is functional: the reduction of distractions in the environment can improve performance on cognitive tasks, including memory retrieval. Reduction of visual distractions can be operationalized through eye-closure, gaze aversion, or by comparing exposure to simple and complex visual displays, respectively. Reduction of auditory distractions is typically examined by comparing performance under quiet and noisy conditions. Theoretical reasoning regarding this phenomenon draws on various psychological principles, including embodied cognition, cognitive load, and modality-specific interference. Practical applications of the research topic are diverse. For example, the findings could be used to improve performance in forensic settings (e.g., eyewitness testimony), educational settings (e.g., exam performance), occupational settings (e.g., employee productivity), or medical settings (e.g., medical history reporting). This Research Topic welcomes articles from all areas of psychology relating to the reduction of distractions to improve task performance. Articles can address (but are not limited to) new empirical findings, comprehensive reviews, theoretical frameworks, opinion pieces, or discussions of practical applications.

Book The Effects of Auditory Distraction on Memory with Verbal Recall

Download or read book The Effects of Auditory Distraction on Memory with Verbal Recall written by Mitra David Gobin and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of auditory distraction on working memory by using verbal recall with a sentence repetition test of 22 sentences. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: the control group (Group A, n = 20), and three experimental groups (Group B, n=20; Group C, n=20, and Group D, n=20). Participants in each group listened to prerecorded sentences and had six seconds in which to repeat the sentence. While the control group had no additional stimuli present, Group B was exposed to their preferred genre of music in the background, Group C was exposed to their least preferred genre of music, and Group D was exposed to competing speech in the background. Prior to testing, participants reported on music preferences. Following testing, participants hearing music indicated familiarity of the pieces and self-perceived performance based on the distracters. Using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), no statistically significant differences were found among any groups (SCORE x GROUP), F(3) = 0.587; p > 0.05. The disparity of non-native English speaking participants among groups may have resulted in possible confounding, although overt comprehension of sentences was not being tested. Perceived performance enhancement was evident in the group exposed to their preferred genre of music as a distracter, despite the fact that actual performance was no different from the other groups. Such perceived enhancement lends itself to support an arousal theory of at least self-perceived enhancement. It is theorized that the age of participants (mean age of 23.6 years old) may in fact be an optimal period of resistance to distracters, regardless of type of distracter. Further investigation into more specialized groups with known deficits, such as patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type with identifiable neurological deficits, may lead to greater differences in auditory distraction using music preference and competing speech.

Book The Effects of Noise on Man

Download or read book The Effects of Noise on Man written by Karl D. Kryter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Effects of Noise on Man covers the techniques for the evaluation of environmental noise in terms of its effects on human. The book provides the fundamental definitions of sound, its measurement, and concepts of the basic functioning, and the attributes of the auditory system. The text also presents along with their experimental basis, procedures for estimating from physical measures of noise its effects on man's auditory system and speech communications. The last part of the book is devoted to man's nonauditory system responses and includes information about the effects of noise on work performance, sleep, feelings of pain, vision, and blood circulation.
