Book The Effects of Athletic Scholarships on Motivation in Sport

Download or read book The Effects of Athletic Scholarships on Motivation in Sport written by Nikola Medic and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of rewards has been found to undermine intrinsic motivation (Deci & Ryan, 1999). This conclusion is primarily based on research conducted in non-sporting environments. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived motivational changes resulting from the hypothetical manipulation of a reward (i.e., athletic scholarships). Differences in "present" motivation between scholarship and non-scholarship athletes were also assessed. Gender, life roles, and sport experience were also examined in relation to scholarship status. Basketball players from four Ontario (n = 70) and seven U.S. Division I universities (n = 46) were examined. All athletes completed a set of demographic questions, as well as questions from the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS; Pelletier, Fortier, Vallerand, Tuson, Briere, & Blais, 1995) which assessed their "present" motivation. Athletes also completed the SMS to evaluate their "perceived future" motivation based on a hypothetical manipulation of the scholarship status. For Ontario non-scholarship athletes, extrinsic regulation (an extrinsic motive) increased with the introduction of a scholarship and the intrinsic motive to experience stimulation decreased. For U.S. scholarship athletes, the intrinsic motive to accomplish things decreased when scholarships were removed. When the two scholarship status groups were compared across "present" levels of motivation, U.S. scholarship males reported significantly higher levels of introjected regulation compared to Ontario non-scholarship males. Ontario non-scholarship females reported significantly higher levels of introjected regulation compared to U.S. scholarship females. U.S. scholarship athletes reported significantly higher levels of external regulation compared to Ontario non-scholarship athletes. Results offer partial support for self-determination theory. Implications for future research are discussed.

Book Gender Scholarship Status and Time on Scholarship

Download or read book Gender Scholarship Status and Time on Scholarship written by Matthew Scott Ruckman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effects of athletic scholarships, gender, and length of time with a scholarship on the types and levels of student athletes' motivations. The study employed self-determination theory, specifically cognitive evaluation theory, as a means to explain and discriminate among motivations. Previous research has provided somewhat conflicting results on the effects of scholarships and gender. There was limited research on the effects of time with scholarships on student athletes' motivations. This study examined differences in student athletes' motivational types and levels to participate in their primary sport. The design of the study was an ex post facto, nonexperimental, survey research design. Four NCAA Division II institutions in the Gulf South Athletic Conference provided the setting for this study. The main analysis included a total of 299 responses. The data were analyzed and the results were presented using nonparametric ANOVAs and post hoc nonparametric t-tests, in addition to descriptive statistics, tables, and graphs. The results of the study revealed no significant differences between genders on any form of motivation. Significant differences were found in types of motives relative to participants' scholarship status. However, these differences were not found in the direction theorized by SDT. No significant differences were observed for length of time on scholarship as measured in this study on forms of motivation. Finally, significant effects were identified for all extrinsic forms of motivation relative to the variable primary sport.

Book Understanding the Influence of the Coach and Team Relationships on Sport Motivation in Collegiate Student Athletes

Download or read book Understanding the Influence of the Coach and Team Relationships on Sport Motivation in Collegiate Student Athletes written by Lindsey Swanson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete

Download or read book The Miseducation of the Student Athlete written by Kenneth L. Shropshire and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 DIGITAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST SOCIAL IMPACT BOOK The student-athlete's life: practice, gym, weight room, film review, repeat. Simply put, sports come first. Academics is a distant second. As the revenues generated by big-time college sports continue to skyrocket, virtually all of the debate involves whether (and how much) student-athletes should be paid for play. Kenneth L. Shropshire and Collin D. Williams, Jr., argue that "student" has to come first in student-athlete: the focus should be on prioritizing a meaningful education. In The Miseducation of the Student Athlete: How to Fix College Sports, Shropshire and Williams draw on new research to reveal that it has become increasingly difficult for college athletes to balance school and sports, much less a social life, leading to serious economic, professional, and emotional consequences for young people. Given that fewer than 2% of all college men's basketball and football players will play at the professional level, the other 98% of student-athletes must be prepared to find and perform well in jobs outside of their respective field of play. In this bold call to action, Shropshire and Williams explain how we got here and what can be done about it. They lay out The Student-Athlete Manifesto, a roadmap to increase the likelihood that student-athletes can succeed both on and off the field. They also offer a Meaningful Degree Model, which ensures education pays for everyone, along with stories of success that show it is possible to be both a student and an athlete. A critical read for student-athletes, sports leadership, policy makers, and anyone who loves college sports, The Miseducation of the Student Athlete has the potential to disrupt college sport and create lasting change.

Book The Relationship Between Sport Specialization and Creativity and the Impact on Athletic Scholarship Opportunities

Download or read book The Relationship Between Sport Specialization and Creativity and the Impact on Athletic Scholarship Opportunities written by Anthony J. Cevoli and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an estimated 40 million children participating in organized athletics, youth sports' rapid growth and expansion have generated controversy. Specifically, adolescent athletes tend to specialize in a single sport at an early age, producing debate regarding the motivations, risks, and effects of concentrating on specialized activity early. As postsecondary tuition skyrockets, young athletes and parents have sought athletic scholarships to finance higher education. Focusing on a sport at an early age may develop prowess. However, experts have unveiled early specialization increases injury risks, burnout, and lack of interest in adult athletes. The highly structured, rule-based environment of early, specialized athletics may negatively affect creativity. Rigid, deliberate practice schedules replace creativity-enhancing free time unstructured play promotes. This quantitative correlational study examined athletes participating in Division I and II collegiate athletic programs to understand the relationship between early sport specialization and creativity and how it impacts athletic scholarships. The research did not find a relationship between sport specialization patterns and creativity, nor did it observe creativity impacting athletic scholarships. Creativity differences between Division I and II athletes existed. Sport specialization patterns differed between men and women athletic program participants. Elementary sport diversification affected athletic scholarship and collegiate sports participation. These results will guide young athletes' and parents' approaches to youth sports.

Book The Effects of Social Support on the Sport Motivation of NCAA Division III Athletes Through the Lens of Self determination Theory

Download or read book The Effects of Social Support on the Sport Motivation of NCAA Division III Athletes Through the Lens of Self determination Theory written by Stephanie Dawn Roby and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental correlational survey study was to evaluate the relationship between sport motivation and the types of support received from coaches, parents, and peers for NCAA Division III athletes. NCAA Division III athletes (n= 74) who participated in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women's soccer during the 2021-2022 school year completed a demographic survey, the Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II), and the Athlete Received Support Questionnaire (ARSQ). Scores for the SMS-II and the ARSQ were calculated, and a multiple linear regression was used to analyze the data. Athlete’s scores for the SMS-II averaged M= 39.08, with scores ranging from -38 to 105. Average scores on the ARSQ for coaches: emotional (M= 15.47), esteem (M= 16.24), informational (M= 20.32), and tangible (M= 20.91); parents: emotional (M= 22.27), esteem (M= 121.66), informational (M= 22.59), and tangible (M= 16.53); peers: emotional (M= 20.45), esteem (M= 20.38), informational (M= 22.97), and tangible (M= 20.79). A statistically significant relationship was found between sport motivation and the types of support provided by coaches, where the researcher rejected the null hypothesis F(4, 69) = 3.65, p = .009. An analysis of coefficients was performed, but none of the predictor variables were significant on their own. The researcher failed to reject the null hypothesis for parents F(4, 68) = 0.724, p = .579 and peers F(4, 68) = .705, p = .591. Based on the findings, social support from coaches has a positive impact on the sport motivation of NCAA Division III athletes. More research needs to be done to further determine the relationship between types of support provided by parents and peers and sport motivation.
