Book excerpt: READ 180 is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of elementary to middle school students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level. The program directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. Stage A provides tools for young struggling readers in elementary school to develop critical literacy skills. Stage B provides middle school struggling readers with topics designed for their level of reading that hold their interest. System 44 was designed for the most challenged, older struggling readers, and helps these students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. It uses validated assessment for screening and placement, research-based phonics instruction and highly motivating and age-appropriate adaptive technology.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the Read 180 program as a Response to Intervention reading strategy tool for middle school students. This study explored the effect of the RtI-designed technology-based reading program on seventh and eighth-grade students labeled as at-risk for reading failure. Data was analyzed using the standardized analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Participants in this study were given pseudonyms to protect their identity and scores. In addition, pseudonyms for the county and school where research was conducted were provided. The results of the study indicated that the Read 180 program at the focus school of this study did impact the reading achievement of Read 180 participants. Educators continue to identify low reading scores as evidence of many students struggling to achieve grade level standards. Reading intervention programs have been introduced to elementary schools to assist struggling readers. This study investigated the effects of the READ 180 reading intervention program on the reading achievement of fourth and fifth grade English Learners and fourth and fifth grade English Only students at two elementary schools. The Reading Inventory (RI) was administered twice, to establish baseline data for the first academic quarter, and at the end of the fourth academic quarter, to determine if changes in achievement occurred between the pretest and posttest. Through paired samples t-tests, this author found that there was significant change in the reading achievement of fourth and fifth grade English Learners and fourth and fifth grade English Only students. This study suggests that students may significantly improve reading skills when participating in the READ 180 reading intervention program. Book excerpt: READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level. The program addresses individual learning styles through adaptive software, interesting literature, and direct instruction with reading skills. The purpose of this study was to compare the achievement of academically at-risk students in Sevier County Public Schools in East Tennessee who participated in the READ 180 pilot program with the achievement of their academically at-risk peers not enrolled in the intervention program before and after its implementation in order to assess the reading intervention program. The Sevier County school system, after extensive study and involved research, decided to allocate over $750,000 into the READ 180 reading intervention program at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. The study included students in grades 5 and 7 who participated in the READ 180 pilot program and their at-risk peers in grades 5 and 7 who did not participate in the READ 180 program. The select group of at-risk students participated in READ 180 as a pilot program to determine the impact of the program upon each student's academic achievement. The students were selected for the study based upon their composite reading TCAP score being in the lowest quartile, thus deeming the student at-risk. Test scores reported for 2004 and 2005 on the Tennessee 3 Comprehensive Assessment Program were obtained from the Sevier County school system's records. Comparisons were made on the TCAP total reading-language scores, total math scores, gender, and socioeconomic assessments. Differences between the program's groups (READ 180 at-risk participants and nonparticipants) on "pre-READ 180" scores were measured using two 3-way ANOVA models, one for 5th grade and one for 7th grade. Results from the study showed that READ 180 was significantly associated with the success for many of the at-risk students whether by gender, socioeco.

Book excerpt: Educators are constantly looking for ways to motivate students to become better readers and able to access all core curricula. One way schools and districts try to improve the reading skills of struggling readers is through intervention programs. The data selected for analysis were derived from seventh-grade students who participated in a reading intervention program. Participating students engaged daily in the Journeys reading program, which is designed for those who struggle in reading. This supplemental program was used outside of the core English language arts (ELA) program and occurred every day for a full year. Students were provided direct explicit instruction using 45 minute routines in whole-group and small group settings as well as computer based instruction. A paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference between the means of pre- and post-test district benchmark scores after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. Another paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in the core ELA grade point average (GPA) of seventh-grade students after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. An alpha level of .05 was used to determine statistical significance. The analysis of the benchmark scores suggested that participation in the Journeys reading program may have a positive impact on reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Struggling high school readers still persist into the 21st century despite hundreds of intervention programs and years of research, Nearly 10 percent of adults in the United States are illiterate and this percentage is higher among economically disadvantaged and minority students, This mixed-methods study was focused on determining the effectiveness of the Achieve3000 Intervention program according to reading achievement measures along with student and teacher perceptions. Statistical analyses were conducted to reveal statistically positive effects of Achieve3000 by various student demographics. Theme analyses were also conducted to reveal streghts of the program, which consisted of Lexile growth, motivational aspects, and support as well as barriers of the program, which consisted of the programs inability to meet all students' needs, program texts/ activities, and implementation issues.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the impact of the READ 180 reading intervention program upon the affective and cognitive reading skills of 21 struggling ninth grade at-risk students at a Title I high school in Southern California. There was minimal qualitative analysis of the READ 180 program at the secondary level and nominal research in general on affective learning regarding motivation to read for at-risk high school students. This study was designed to explore what changes, if any, may occur in the reading attitudes (affective skills) and comprehension levels (cognitive skills) of participants in the READ 180 program. Data was collected from interviews, observations, and student documents over a 16 week period and then analyzed for themes and connections to the research questions. The findings for this study indicated that READ 180 was a beneficial intervention in limited areas for many at-risk high school students, but it did not meet the myriad of affective and cognitive needs required for grade level literacy development. READ 180 best served secondary level students when it was modified based on individual student needs and interests.

Book excerpt: This action research project examined the effects of an intervention program on student reading and math achievement. TCAP reading and math assessments and ThinkLink Learning reading and math assessments were used for the measures on student achievement. Student perceptions and attitudes were measured with a questionnaire and four open-ended questions. The study found a statistical difference on the experimental group's TCAP and ThinkLink achievement scores. This study was one academic school year. The results of the action research parallel the results found in the review of related literature. The experimental group did experience at least a year's growth as outlined by No Child Left Behind. However, the control group did out-perform the experimental group in regard to the assessments.
