Book Health Effects of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water

Download or read book Health Effects of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water written by Dr. Marco Ferrante and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals are inorganic substances that occur naturally in geological formations. Naturally occurring metals are dissolved in water when it comes into contact with rock or soil material. Some metals are essential for life and are naturally available in our food and water. Trace amounts of metals are common in water, and these are normally not harmful to your health. In fact, some metals are essential to sustain life. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium must be present for normal body functions. Cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc are needed. However many of the metals and metalloids that are found in drinking water can have an adverse impact on human health. This book provides a 'state-of-the-art' review of the health implications of metals and metalloids in drinking water and is a key reference in the risk assessment and management of water supplies. The increased urbanization and increased water demand in industrial areas has amplified the metals problem in groundwater sources. In fact the contamination of our water resources by poisonous metals occurs largely due to human activity. These activities include industrial processes, such as electronics industry and mining activity, agricultural activities, and the dumping of wastes in landfills. The International standard references concerning water resources are various and, though they are based on WHO guidelines, they are extremely diversified in relation to local issues and emerging problems. This report pulls the information together to provide an important reference source.

Book Aluminium Toxicity In Infants Health And Disease

Download or read book Aluminium Toxicity In Infants Health And Disease written by Paolo Zatta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-01-02 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium is the most abundant metal ion in the biosphere and we are continuously exposed to it in our everyday life through food, beverages, pharmaceutical products, etc. This book is a current and comprehensive review of the biochemistry, metabolism and toxicity of aluminium undertaken by an international group of authors, many of whom are outstanding authorities in their respective fields. In contrast with previous books on this topic, much of the subject matter is unique, in that it is primarily directed at aluminium nutrition and toxicity in infants and children. This book covers many aspects of aluminium toxicity in infants including for instance the embryo-fetal as well as the neurodevelopmental effects of this element, contamination of pharmaceutical products, and individual sensitivity through vaccines using aluminium as an adjuvant. This book will be especially useful to paediatricians, paediatric nephrologists & neurologists, nutritionists, toxicologists, biochemical toxicologists and postgraduate students.

Book Chemical Contaminants and Residues in Food

Download or read book Chemical Contaminants and Residues in Food written by D Schrenk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical contaminants are a major concern for the food industry. Chemical contaminants and residues in food provides an essential guide to the main chemical contaminants, their health implications, the processes by which they contaminate food products, and methods for their detection and control. Part one focuses on risk assessment and analytical methods. Gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy techniques for the detection of chemical contaminants and residues are discussed, as are applications of HPLC-MS techniques and cell-based bioassays. Major chemical contaminants are then discussed in part two, including dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls, veterinary drug and pesticide residues, heat-generated and non-thermally-produced toxicants, D- and cross-linked amino acids, mycotoxins and phycotoxins, and plant-derived contaminants. Finally, part three goes on to explore the contamination of specific foods. Chemical contamination of cereals, red meat, poultry and eggs are explored, along with contamination of finfish and marine molluscs. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Chemical contaminants and residues in food is an invaluable tool for all industrial and academic researchers involved with food safety, from industry professionals responsible for producing safe food, to chemical analysts involved in testing the final products. Provides an essential guide to the main chemical contaminants, their health implications, the processes by which they contaminate food products, and methods for their detection and control Sections provide in-depth focus on risk assessment and analytical methods, major chemical contaminants, and the contamination of specific foods Chemical contamination of cereals, red meat, poultry and eggs are explored, along with contamination of finfish and marine molluscs

Book Aging and Vulnerability to Environmental Chemicals

Download or read book Aging and Vulnerability to Environmental Chemicals written by Bernard Weiss and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the world's societies face an unprecedented demographic challenge. They are aging at such a rapid rate that it threatens to overwhelm their resources and economies. Of all the problems this creates, the foremost is declining health. As populations age, they place rising demands on medical care systems but no longer produce the wealth required to sustain them. Aging is not a disease. We possess no therapies for it, only for its manifestations. However, the stresses it imposes on society would be more manageable if the burden of disease and disability could be diminished. This book focuses on how chemical agents may affect the health of aging populations. Most research in this area has focussed on early development, but it is not the only life stage where responses to the adverse effects of chemicals are intensified. Vulnerability to toxins climbs again late in life and, in many ways, repeats the imperfect defences deployed by the immature organism. One feature common to both early and late phases is a reduced capacity to compensate for damage. In the first case, the functional mechanisms have yet to evolve. In the second, they have passed into a post-mature decline. The chemical revolution has flooded the world with new chemicals that penetrate every aspect of our lives. Although they bring significant benefits, they exact a heavy price. We are now exposed to thousands of chemicals whose toxic properties still elude us and whose chemical signatures can be found in our tissues. By improving our knowledge of how our contaminated environment contributes to declining health, we can act to avert further strains on our beleaguered societies. Written by experts on the environmental exposures that jeopardize optimal aging, this book serves as an excellent foundation for policy decisions. It will be read primarily by those engaged in environmental or aging research. More general readers will benefit from learning about the chemicals to avoid.
