Book Effects of Different Habitats Versus Agricultural Practices on Farmland Birds in Ontario

Download or read book Effects of Different Habitats Versus Agricultural Practices on Farmland Birds in Ontario written by Kathryn E. Freemark and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a comparative field study conducted on organic farms and conventional farms in Ontario to identify important crop and non-crop habitats and agricultural practices for different groups of farmland birds, and to quantify their effects on bird species richness and abundance. Birds were surveyed using point counts from field edges in May and June 1990 on 20 organic and conventional farms paired geographically for their similarity in crop and non-crop habitats. Fourteen classes of birds and nine species had sufficient data for analysis. Multiple regression models were used to explain variations in species richness and abundance in total and among bird classes. Regression models for omnivores and grassland species of concern were used to estimate risk from adverse changes in site conditions. The results help in assessing ecological risks posed by agriculture and provide insights for alternative landscape designs and farm management systems that enhance farmland birds.

Book The Effects of Agricultural Management on Wetland Birds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of the human population, there is a need to balance biodiversity conservation with achieving food security. Increasing agricultural inputs has greatly augmented food production on smaller areas of land, but generally has negative effects on biodiversity. As natural wetlands decline worldwide, birds are increasingly using flooded agricultural land. The objectives of this thesis are (1) to determine what affects the use of flooded agriculture by waterbirds and (2) to determine what has been studied about the effects of agricultural intensification on wetland birds. I examined the factors affecting the use of flooded agriculture by waterbirds by studying the abundance and species richness of waterbirds on rice fields during the growing season. I modeled bird abundance and species richness as a function of spatiotemporal variables, daily field conditions, and chemical management and compared a set of candidate models using subsets of these variables using an information theoretic approach. Abundance and species richness of waterbirds had a clear relationship with water management, but I found no evidence to suggest that they were influenced by chemical management factors. To determine what has been studied about the effects of agricultural intensification on wetland birds, I created a systematic map to collate the available evidence on this topic. I conducted a systematic review for articles that included information on birds using flooded agriculture of differing levels of agricultural intensification. The systematic map consists of 102 studies that met my inclusion criteria. I found that the vast majority of the studies were conducted in rice fields and flooded wet meadows used for grazing and silage. A wide variety of methods of intensification were studied, but the majority of the studies only examined the effects of intensification on bird abundance. I suggest that more studies are needed on the effects of intensification on bird survival and reproduction in order to determine the true habitat value of flooded agriculture for wetland birds. Overall, the results of this thesis suggest that the intensification of flooded agriculture cannot be universally described as beneficial or detrimental to wetland birds. Book excerpt: In this unique book an international cast of authors highlight all aspects of the problems associated with farming and bird conservation. Discussion ranges from the socio-political pressures on farm policy to the effects of management on a variety of bird species throughout the more and less developed parts of the European Union. Potential changes in the Common Agricultural Policy are considered in terms of how they have been and can be tailored to benefit birds and wildlife through such initiatives as the new Agri-Environment Regulation. Farming and Birds in Europe addresses the need for policy efforts to focus on both the concerns of conservation and sensible farm production in a timely manner. An opportunity not to be missed is at hand, and this book provides much of the importance in seeing that a sensible conclusion is reached, both for the needs of the farmer and consumer and for the birds and wildlife of the European countryside. Book Bird Conservation and Agriculture

Download or read book Bird Conservation and Agriculture written by Jeremy D. Wilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing for researchers, professionals and graduate students, the authors summarize the collapse of populations of many farmland bird species in the 20th century, one of the biggest conservation problems of the day. They firstly set the historical context of change in agriculture and bird communities since the 18th century, and introduce the bird communities of agricultural land today. They then provide an overview of this very active area of applied conservation science, including in-depth case studies of 16 species that, taken together, illustrate the many ways that agricultural intensification has affected bird populations. Moreover, they show how this evidence base, coupled with recent greening of agriculture policy, has provided opportunities to manage agricultural land to better integrate the needs of food production and bird conservation. They conclude by looking forward to challenges that the conservation of bird populations on agricultural land is likely to face in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synopsis covers evidence for the effects of conservation interventions for native farmland wildlife. It is restricted to evidence captured on the website www.conservationevidence.com. It includes papers published in the journal Conservation Evidence, evidence summarized on our database and systematic reviews collated by the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence. It is the thrid volume in the series Synopses of Conservation Evidence. Evidence was collected from all European countries west of Russia, but not those south of France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Romania. A list of interventions to conserve wildlife on farmland was developed collaboratively by a team of thirteen experts. A number of interventions that are not currently agri-environment options were added during this process, such as ‘Provide nest boxes for bees (solitary or bumblebees)’ and ‘Implement food labelling schemes relating to biodiversity-friendly farming’. Interventions relating to the creation or management of habitats not considered commercial farmland (such as lowland heath, salt marsh and farm woodland) were removed. The list of interventions was organized into categories based on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifications of direct threats and conservation actions. Interventions that fall under the threat category ‘Agriculture’ are grouped by farming system, with separate sections for interventions that apply to arable or livestock farms, or across all farming types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do species live where they live? What determines the abundance and diversity of species in a given area? What role do species play in the functioning of entire ecosystems? All of these questions share a single core concept—the ecological niche. Although the niche concept has fallen into disfavor among ecologists in recent years, Jonathan M. Chase and Mathew A. Leibold argue that the niche is an ideal tool with which to unify disparate research and theoretical approaches in contemporary ecology. Chase and Leibold define the niche as including both what an organism needs from its environment and how that organism's activities shape its environment. Drawing on the theory of consumer-resource interactions, as well as its graphical analysis, they develop a framework for understanding niches that is flexible enough to include a variety of small- and large-scale processes, from resource competition, predation, and stress to community structure, biodiversity, and ecosystem function. Chase and Leibold's synthetic approach will interest ecologists from a wide range of subdisciplines.

Book excerpt: This attractively illustrated book reviews the effects of agricultural development on bird populations in Britain. Examining modern farmland as a bird habitat, it explains the changes, both in habitat structure and in available resources, that have occurred as a result of mechanisation and use of agrochemicals. Farmland bird communities are described, and their composition related to farm structure and land use. Based extensively on empirical data extracted from the British Trust for Ornithology's Common Bird Census and from nest histories recorded in the BTO'S Nest Record Scheme, the book presents an important analysis of the position of agricultural bird populations under modern farming systems. Particular examination has been made of the impact of changing methods, rotations and crops, which have been underestimated in the past. Resulting from the co-operation between a professional ornithologist and a working cereal farmer, this book provides an objective and informed view of the impact of British agriculture on bird populations.

Book Wildlife Conservation in Farm Landscapes

Download or read book Wildlife Conservation in Farm Landscapes written by David Lindenmayer and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of Australians want to be assured that the food and fibre being produced on this continent have been grown and harvested in an ecologically sustainable way. Ecologically sustainable farming conserves the array of species that are integral to key ecological processes such as pollination, seed dispersal, natural pest control and the decomposition of waste. Wildlife Conservation in Farm Landscapes communicates new scientific information about best practice ways to integrate conservation and agriculture in the temperate eucalypt woodland belt of eastern Australia. It is based on the large body of scientific literature in this field, as well as long-term studies at 790 permanent sites on over 290 farms extending throughout Victoria, New South Wales and south-east Queensland. Richly illustrated, with chapters on birds, mammals, reptiles, invertebrates and plants, this book illustrates how management interventions can promote nature conservation and what practices have the greatest benefit for biodiversity. Together the new insights in this book inform whole-of-farm planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasslands comprise more than a quarter of the Earth's land surface. In addition to supporting a wide range of vertebrates such as domestic livestock and a variety of games species, grassland is the natural habitat for a wide range of invertebrate species, and this book considers those which occur in grassland and their impact on soil fertility and herbage growth. It describes grassland as a habitat for invertebrates, the groups which occur there and their abudance. An extensive literature on grassland invertebrates scattered through numerous scientific journals and reports is drawn on in an attempt to develop an overview. In the opening chapter the major grassland types are considered and the features which influence the distribution and abudance of the invertebrates which inhabit them are discussed. Next the major taxonomic groups are reviewed in turn, with a brief account of their biology and ecology and of their ecosystem role. Some general features of grassland invertebrate communities are then described and teh factors which influence th epopulation densities of their constituent species are considered. Particular attentionm is given to the ways in which populations are influenced by management practices. The final and largest chapterdeals with the various ways in which invertebrates influence important grassland processes through ingestion of organic matter, interaction with injurious species is considered, with particular emphasis on the potential for achieving this through manipulating grassland management practices.
