Book Effect of Sounds Generated by an Acoustic Deterrent Device on the Abundance and Distribution of Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena in Retreat Passage British Columbia

Download or read book Effect of Sounds Generated by an Acoustic Deterrent Device on the Abundance and Distribution of Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena in Retreat Passage British Columbia written by Peter F. Olesiuk and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of sounds generated by an acoustic deterrent device on harbor porpoises in Retreat Passage, B.C. Abundance declined precipitously when the device was activated. The mean number of porpoise resightings while tracking their movements also declined. The urgency of this experiment lies in the widespread use of acoustic deterrent devices by the aquaculture industry. In British Columbia these devices are used to control seals, which prey on salmon at salmon farms. The new generation of these devices emit frequencies to which cetacean hearing is most sensitive. The potential adverse effects has received attention, particularly in light of observations suggesting the harbor porpoise is not as abundant on the British Columbia coast as it once was.

Book Detecting and Assessing Trends in Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena Presence in and Near the Force Test Site

Download or read book Detecting and Assessing Trends in Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena Presence in and Near the Force Test Site written by Peter H. J. Porskamp and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current tidal energy development activities at a test facility, Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE), in Minas Passage, a high flow site in the upper Bay of Fundy, include examination of potential effects of tidal turbines on commonly occurring harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758). Prior visual observations and passive acoustic monitoring (using C-PODs) of harbour porpoise were conducted over multiple years in spring, summer and fall. The present study focused on filling the winter and early spring seasonal gap in baseline data. Harbour porpoise presence (detected via echolocation clicks) was assessed at established monitoring sites in and near the FORCE test area during December 2013 - June 2014. Descriptive results indicated that harbour porpoise use Minas Passage year-round but with low presence during the winter months. The full multi-year dataset was used to develop a new statistical model (GAM/GEE) of spatio-temporal trends in harbour porpoise use of the FORCE area. It showed two seasonal peaks in harbour porpoise presence with the largest peak in late spring (June) and a second in the fall (October). It also showed trends with diel cycle (greater activity at night), tidal height (greater presence near high tide), tidal velocity and flow direction. Instrument performance tests were also conducted and included assessments of hydrophone performance using tethered buoys and a stationary instrument platform, tests of hydrophone shrouding, and assessments of hydrophone detection range at FORCE. These studies have implications for both tidal energy development and conservation of harbour porpoises. They will inform best practices in monitoring harbour porpoises at high flow sites and will enhance our ability to detect potential effects on harbour porpoises of turbine installation and operation at FORCE.

Book Analysis of the Effects on Harbour Porpoises from the Underwater Sound During Thec Onstruction of the Borssele and Gemini Offshore Wind Farms

Download or read book Analysis of the Effects on Harbour Porpoises from the Underwater Sound During Thec Onstruction of the Borssele and Gemini Offshore Wind Farms written by C.A.F. de Jong and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of underwater noise on marine mammals during the piling of foundations for offshore wind farms (platforms and wind turbines) are currently estimated on the basis of exceeding threshold values for the exposure of the animals to underwater noise. This is done through the Ecology and Cumulation Framework (KEC).This study, commissioned by the Wozep program of Rijkswaterstaat, provides more insight into the response of harbour porpoises to pile-driving noise and into the relationship between pile-driving noise and the behavioural response. Based on the data from acoustic monitoring during the construction of the Borssele wind farms in 2019 and 2020 and during the construction of the Gemini wind farms in 2015, it was investigated which acoustic metric (weighted or not weighted for the various species-specific frequency-dependent hearing sensitivity) best explains behavioural changes in the harbour porpoise. Statistical analysis of the detection of porpoise echolocation sounds (porpoise positive minutes measured by CPOD equipment) as a function of the distance from the pile, shows that porpoises are detected less often during pile driving at distances of at least 7 km near Borssele, where the pile-driving noise had to remain within a noise limit, and up to at least 15 km at Gemini, where no noise limit was yet applicable. These distances are considerably smaller than calculated (50% probabilityof disturbance at a distance of approximately 30 km) based on the current KEC methodology. The analysis of the detection of harbour porpoise echolocation sounds as a functionof unweighted and weighted single strike sound exposure level of the piling hits (SELSS) shows various threshold values above which harbour porpoises are detected less often. Due to the applied mitigation measures and masking by ambient noise, it was not possible to determine the SELSS values at Borssele over the same frequency bandwidth as at Gemini. Therefore, the dose-effect relationships are not comparable. The logical assumption that a measure weighted for the hearing sensitivity of animals gives a better prediction for the behavioural response than an unweighted measure is not immediately confirmed by the analysis of the measurement data from the Borssele and Gemini projects. The study also shows that there are problems with the practical implementation of frequency-weighted SELSS, due to the uncertainty in both modelling and measurement of the high-frequency components of pile-driving noise, where ambient noise masks high-frequency pile-driving noise. The measurements at Borssele, where pile-driving noise has been mitigated and where busy shipping results in a high level of background noise, show that it is not always clear whether pile-driving noise is the main source of disturbance. The analysis of the detection of harbor porpoise echolocation sounds as a function ofthe unweighted and weighted sound level (SPL) of the underwater sound at Borssele and Gemini shows a clear shows a clear decrease in detections with increasing SPL values. That suggests that SPL may be a more complete measure for predicting behavioral response than SELSS. However, predicting the total SPL as a result ofall sources requires more information and models than are available, which means that this measure is not yet directly applicable for effect studies.

Book Baseline Data on the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena in Relation to the Intended Wind Farm Site NSW in the Netherlands

Download or read book Baseline Data on the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena Phocoena in Relation to the Intended Wind Farm Site NSW in the Netherlands written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To evaluate the possible impact of the planned Near Shore Wind farm on harbour porpoises, a baseline study has been carried out to provide a thorough description of the ecological reference situation. Three methods were used to collect baseline data on harbour porpoise in the intended wind farm area as well as reference areas. Firstly, during a whole year echolocation sounds of the animals were collected via fixed hydrophones, so-called T-PODs. This will provide information on relative density of porpoises. Secondly, bi-monthly ship-surveys were conducted to obtain an estimate for density. Finally, hydrophones were towed behind the survey ship to corroborate the visual data. These studies proved that porpoises frequently occurred in the target area and also in the control sites. Intensity of the porpoise activity was clearly higher in winter months. Observations surpass the expectations with respect to the amount of animals and recording
