Book The Acid Rain Debate

Download or read book The Acid Rain Debate written by Ernest J Yanarella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by noted academicians, lawyers, energy agency administrators, and research analysts focuses on the political and legal aspects of the acid rain debate, the policy options for resolving the controversy, and the international dimensions of acid rain control. The contributors highlight concerns drawn primarily from the developing study of acid rain in political science, economics, public administration, and policy analysis--concerns that are the focal point of the public debate over the nature, impact, and cost of acid rain and the mitigation of its effects. The book complements the impressive body of research from the natural sciences and responds to the need for applied study to help resolve the current policy stalemate on this critical environmental issue. The Acid Rain Debate features a comprehensive annotated bibliography on acid rain and relevant social science research.

Book Pollution Politics and Power

Download or read book Pollution Politics and Power written by Thomas O. McGarity and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electric power industry has been transformed over the past forty years, becoming more reliable and resilient while meeting environmental goals. A big question now is how to prevent backsliding. Pollution, Politics, and Power tells the story of the remarkable transformation of the electric power industry over the last four decades. Electric power companies have morphed from highly polluting regulated monopolies into competitive, deregulated businesses that generate, transmit, and distribute cleaner electricity. Power companies are investing heavily in natural gas and utility-scale renewable resources and have stopped building new coal-fired plants. They facilitate end-use efficiency and purchase excess electricity produced by rooftop solar panels and backyard wind turbines, helping to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. But these beneficial changes have come with costs. The once-powerful coal industry is on the edge of ruin, with existing coal-fired plants closing and coal mines shutting down. As a result, communities throughout Appalachia suffer from high unemployment and reduced resources, which have exacerbated a spiraling opioid epidemic. The Trump administration’s efforts to revive the coal industry by scaling back environmental controls and reregulating electricity prices have had little effect on the coal industry’s decline. Major advances therefore come with warning signs, which we must heed in charting the continuing course of sustainable electricity. In Pollution, Politics, and Power, Thomas O. McGarity examines the progress made, details lessons learned, and looks to the future with suggestions for building a more sustainable grid while easing the economic downsides of coal’s demise.

Book Acid Rain Control

Download or read book Acid Rain Control written by Diane Suitt Gilleland and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen pieces of federal legislation that require sulfur emission reductions by power plants and other coal-burning facilities are currently pending. This book is drawn from the first conference to address the issue of what the costs of compliance with this legislation will be, with a special emphasis on the Midwest region. A major coal-producing area, the Midwest economy will suffer significantly in terms of goods and services produced with electricity and in jobs lost. The participants represent utility, coal, and transportation industries, as well as academia, environmentalists, state and federal regulatory agencies, and the United Mine Workers of America. The critical issues they address include economic modeling and forecasting the results of acid rain legislation, the effects on transportation, air pollution control and the environment, state and federal regulations, and a search for solutions.
