Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of accountability, evolving from outcome- and standards-based practices, is prevalent in the education, healthcare, and counseling fields. In regards to standards, counselor education is framed by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) for best practices in terms of content knowledge; however the assessment of competence of that knowledge is not easily defined. Furthermore, school counselors are held to the standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) to practice within a certain scope of competence; however, the determination of that level is also not easily or clearly defined. This research sought to investigate credentialing exams and their relationship to competence for school counselors by examining Praxis II: School Guidance and Counseling exam results based on accreditation of participants’ graduate-level school counseling program. This study found no statistically significant effect between accreditation of the participants’ graduate-level school counseling program and results on the Praxis II exam. Likewise, no statistically significant relationship between age, gender, ethnicity, or GPA and Praxis II results was found. Further research, both quantitative and qualitative, should be conducted to investigate the relationship between accreditation and exam results. Last, alignment between counselor education program objectives, standards, and assessment should be strengthened to gain a better grasp on attaining competence.

Book excerpt: This study explored whether school counselors who attended a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program varied from those who did not attend a CACREP accredited program in their sense of feeling prepared to perform tasks within the four fundamental categories: counseling, consultation, curriculum, and coordination. This research also sought to determine if CACREP and non-CACREP professionals differed in their sense of performance match between what they actually do in their counseling position and what they believed was appropriate for their position. There were a total of 838 participants between the ages of 23 and 71 who were members of the American School Counseling Association, were currently practicing, and had earned either a master's or specialist degree. Participants completed an adaptation of the School Counseling Rating Scale (SCARS), originally developed by Scarborough (2005), to rate their sense of how well their education prepared them for tasks within the four fundamental categories, how often they actually engage in these tasks, and how appropriate they felt those tasks were in their profession. The analyses yielded some significant findings. One of these findings indicated accreditation did have an effect on perceived preparedness for one of the fundamental categories. Also, several significant differences existed in preparedness among all participants without regard to accreditation.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This qualitative study explored counselor educators' perceptions of Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP) at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Specifically, this study investigated the barriers for seeking, maintaining, and/or achieving CACREP accreditation. The researcher utilized in-depth, individual interviews and biographical questionnaires. The sample comprised 14 HBCU counselor educators (i.e. 9 females and 5 males) at both CACREP accredited and non-CACREP accredited institutions. Three major themes emerged from participant responses: (a) resources needed to obtain and maintain CACREP accreditation, (b) multiple interpretations of requirements, and (c) validation received from having CACREP accreditation. Practical applications for counselor educators and recommendations for future research are included.

Practicum is a vital part of the matriculation process of counselors in training. This clinical based course allows students to practice the skills they have learned in previous, more didactic based courses. Trainees can stretch skills, all under the watch of a counselor supervisor with greater experience. Although CACREP instructs all accredited counseling programs to have such a course in place, the standards are not specific. Schools are often interpreting the standards in a multitude of ways, presumably to successfully meet the standards while still serving the student as well as the clientele who seek out mental health assistance (Pitts, 1992a).

The major artifact written on social and cultural diversity discussed culture, challenges and family responsibilities of Latin American women. Laura Rendon's (1994) Validation theory was used to explain how validation on college campuses is a tool to assist with retention and persistence.
