Book excerpt: Walleye, the holy grail of game fish: on catching them, understanding their biology and history, and ensuring their survival Among the more than 34,000 species of fish, few have the walleye’s following—among anglers and diners, states conferring official status on the fish, and towns battling for recognition as the Walleye Capital of the World. And among those passionate fans, few know the walleye as well as Paul J. Radomski does—a fisheries biologist, lake ecology scientist, and old fisherman. In Walleye: A Beautiful Fish of the Dark he unspools the mysteries of this fascinating fish. Radomski looks at walleye from every angle, with something to say to the curious naturalist, committed ecologist, and avid fishing enthusiast. People who view walleye as the “lion of the lakes” might be surprised to learn that rivers are their ancestral habitat. Some might wonder about the name “wall-eye,” a nod to an evolutionary adaptation to dark water environments. Others might simply ask: why walleye? What are they, where do they exist, how do they survive, and how have people come to depend on them? Radomski discusses the principles and pitfalls of managing this predator of the twilight (and the history and methods of doing so) and shares his informed perspective on when and where stocking is prudent. Finally, he explores three of the best walleye lakes: Winnebago, the largest inland walleye fishery in Wisconsin, and Mille Lacs and Red Lake in Minnesota. From the simple pleasures of fishing for walleye to the most pressing questions about how this species survives, this book is the best word on this beautiful fish of the dark.

Book Assessing the Dispersal and Recruitment of Stocked Walleye Fry in a Northern Minnesota Chain of Lakes

Download or read book Assessing the Dispersal and Recruitment of Stocked Walleye Fry in a Northern Minnesota Chain of Lakes written by Joseph A. Amundson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of Minnesota's Walleye (Sander vitreus) egg take practice, 10% of eggs taken for hatchery a stocked back into the donor lake. For Andrusia, part of the Cass Lake Chain of Lakes (Chain), this practice can result in elevated fry densities (mean 17,000 fry/littoral hectare. However, if fry are able to disperse and use all available littoral hectares throughout the Chain, fry densities would be intermediate to typical stocking densities for Minnesota lakes (1,200-2400 fry/littoral hectare). In 2016-2018, 3-3.5 million fry were mass-marked by immersion in oxytetracycline (OTC) prior to stocking into Andrusia to allow differentiation between these fish and those originating from natural reproduction or stocking of unmarked fry in other connected waters. Age-0 Walleyes were sampled throughout the Chain each fall (2016-2018) primarily by boat electrofishing. Each year, age-0 fish were widely distributed by late August. Combined mean marking rates (2016-2018) for each lake of the Chain ranged from 16-97% and cohort marking rates ranged from 71-78%. The ability of stocked fish to disperse throughout the Chain helped suppress density dependent effects, although, total length (mm) increased as catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) decreased with distance from stocking site. In 2019, a chain-wide gill net assessment resulted in cohort (2016-2018) marking rates at ages 1 to 3 similar to their age-0 marking rates. The Chain was previously thought to be largely self-sustaining with put-back stocking considered a social aspect of management by compensating for the removal of eggs (i.e. potential recruits) rather than contributory to the Walleye population, but our results suggest that this stocking is substantially contributing to the population."--Abstract.

Book Walleye Warriors

Download or read book Walleye Warriors written by Rick Whaley and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each spring when the ice clears, the Anishinabe (Chippewa) harvest fish from the lakes of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Their ancient subsistence fishing and hunting tradition is protected by treaties and reinforced by Federal Court rulings, but for years they were met by stones, racial epithets, and death threats hurled by local sports fishermen, resort and cottage owners, and other white neighbors. Walleye Warriors tells the exciting and empowering story of how a multi-race and class alliance of Anishinabe, local residents, and activists defused these dramatic and tense confrontations by witnessing and documenting them. The walleye warriors and their supporters were successful at protecting Chippewa sovereignty despite the attempted use of racism, economic threats, and local government manipulations. Their victorious alliance is continuing the struggle for environmental justice and cultural diversity by striving to stop corporate attempts to mine--and so destroy--northern Wisconsin"--Back cover.
