Book The Effectiveness of Principal Training and Formal Principal Mentoring Programs

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Principal Training and Formal Principal Mentoring Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine principalsâ perceptions of how effective mentoring programs and university-based principal preparation programs are in developing the skills necessary to carry out the 13 critical success factors identified by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). A review of the literature addressed what it means to be an effective principal and what an effective mentoring program should look like. The quantitative study was conducted using a survey developed from the SREBâs 13 critical success factors that have been developed to determine what makes a successful, effective principal. Each factor was developed into a question about whether or not Northeast Tennessee principals perceive that they were adequately prepared to be successful principals in their principal preparation programs and if they received any training through a mentoring program on these same 13 factors once they received their principalship. The overall results indicated that few principals participated in a formal mentoring program and those who did received a marginal amount of assistance on the critical factors identified by the SREB. The results also showed that, overall, the respondents indicated that they received more adequate leadership training during their principal preparation programs on the SREBâs factors in their classroom experience than they did through their hands-on experience; although, respondents did not give particularly high marks to either experience. Furthermore, respondents who belong to a cohort scored their training higher than those who did not belong to a cohort, and those who received a degree higher than a masterâs degree reported a higher level of training than did their peers with only masterâs degrees on some of the SREBâs critical success factors.

Book Leadership through Mentoring

Download or read book Leadership through Mentoring written by Phyllis A. Gimbel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-10 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership Through Mentoring: The Key to Improving the Principals Confidence and Skill lays out the case for the development of robust mentorship programs to support new school leaders. With principal turnover at an all-time high, it is urgent that schools and districts find ways to help newly appointed leaders grow into effective supervisors, managers, and strategic thinkers who can also find personal and professional satisfaction in their careers. Using examples from several established and successful state programs, Leadership Through Mentoring shows how new school leaders’ effectiveness, vision, and engagement can be grown through intentionally designed and executed programs that offer supportive guidance and wise counsel from experienced leaders. Thoughtfully created and appropriately resourced, such programs can pave the way to longer and more successful principal tenures, which research shows lead directly to significant improvements in schools’ cultures, educational efficacy, and teacher and student performance. This is a book for leaders and governing bodies in all kinds of schools.

Book Investigating the Effectiveness of a Formal Principals Mentoring Program

Download or read book Investigating the Effectiveness of a Formal Principals Mentoring Program written by Kareen Mary Skillestad Bangert and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the National Association of Elementary School Principals formal mentoring program attributes and perceptions of protégés and mentors of program effectiveness. Program attributes examined included training prior to mentoring, input into the mentoring process, Mentor Commitment and Program Understanding. The participants for this quantitative study consisted of 201 mentors and 80 protégés who participated in the National Association of Elementary School Principals'(NAESP) formal mentor certification program. Both mentors and protégés were asked to complete a questionnaire adapted from research conducted by Allen, Eby & Lentz (2006b) to assess their perceptions of Mentor Commitment, Mentor Program Understanding, training prior to participation in formal mentoring, input into the mentoring process and Perceived Program Effectiveness. Data from both protégé and mentor questionnaire using multiple regression was used to develop a path model to investigate the relationships between formal mentoring program attributes and Perceived Program Effectiveness for NAESP's formal mentor certification program. Results from the analysis of the protégé questionnaire responses found the program attributes variables to have a significant and direct relationship with Perceived Program Effectiveness were Training Quality and Program Understanding. The effects of Training Quality on Perceived Program Effectiveness was significantly mediated when passing through Program Understanding but not Mentor Commitment. Similar results were found for the multiple regression analysis used to determine the path coefficients for the mentor results. In addition to Training Quality and Program Understanding, received training and match-input was also significantly related to Perceived Program Effectiveness. Training hours, match input and voluntary participation were not found an important attributes for explaining protégés Perceived Program Effectiveness. For the mentors, the relationship of the program attributes variables of Received Training and Training Quality with Perceived Program Effectiveness was found to be significantly mediated by Program Understanding only. Findings from this study suggest including training prior to formal mentoring and the quality of training is essential for creating an effective formal mentoring program. Establishing mentoring programs that create committed mentors and promoting Program Understanding through quality training will increase the effectiveness of the mentor experience for both protégés and mentors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

Book A Delphi Study to Identify Principal Practices of Montana s Office of Public Instruction Formal Mentoring Program for Principal Interns

Download or read book A Delphi Study to Identify Principal Practices of Montana s Office of Public Instruction Formal Mentoring Program for Principal Interns written by Gerald Eugene Pease and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature describes many different formal principal mentoring programs and the mentoring activities in which new principals are asked to participate. Common program features that have been identified for implementing effective formal principal mentoring programs include socialization, reflective practice, mentor/protégé matching, the training, program understanding, and mentor commitment (Daresh, 1995 & 2001; Gray, Bottoms & O'Neil, 2007; Bangert, 2012; Wallace, 2007). Although the effective formal mentoring program characteristics for new and aspiring principals have been identified by the literature, there have been no efforts to determine how Montana's Formal Mentoring Program for new and aspiring principals incorporates these important program elements. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify and describe the program characteristics of Montana's state-mandated formal mentoring program for new principal interns that mentoring experts agree are necessary to create a supportive learning experience for new principals.

Book Learning Opportunities for Principals

Download or read book Learning Opportunities for Principals written by Lee A. Westberry and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School principals must continue to learn and grow in their positions, as societal demands and accountability measures keep changing. Principals have become inundated with increased responsibilities often without the benefit of continued learning opportunities. Too often, district personnel are not equipped to provide the learning needed in order to support school administrators. Learning Opportunities for Principals: Methods for Meeting the Needs of Today’s Administrators is a compilation of best practices to support principal learning to include “how to” design and implement learning prospects that will not only help school administrators, but also district personnel. Learning opportunities include communities of practice, mentoring programs, coaching, and the like. Many districts have programs in place, but they do not attain the desired results because of the program design and readiness of staff. Each chapter will explain how to design an effective program and will also outline the district’s responsibility in the learning. With effective programs, principals’ burnout will be decreased, which minimizes turnover in leadership. All of which will impact student achievement results.

Book Principal Mentorship

Download or read book Principal Mentorship written by Penelope A. Miller-Smith and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principals are essential in any institution of learning. Great schools do not exist in the absence of a great principal, which demonstrates the importance of strong leadership. However, due to complexities and the demanding nature of their jobs, there has been an increasing deficiency in the supply of these professionals. Schools have recorded high attrition rates for new principals, which are higher than retention rates. The purpose of this qualitative study aimed to discuss the effectiveness of these programs in fostering reliable principals with the appropriate skills to handle the pressure and still deliver on their work. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used to gather the necessary data for this research. The results of this study uncovered four themes that relate to best practices for principal mentorship programs. These results can be used to improve novice principal retention by offering them guided mentorship grounded in necessary skills.

Download or read book The Principal Challenge written by Marc S. Tucker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-03 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Blueprint for Developing Tomorrow's School Leaders Based on two years of research supported by Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Broad Foundation, and the New Schools Venture Fund, The Principal Challenge focuses directly on the causes and cures of the crisis in school leadership. Marc Tucker, Judy Codding, and a stellar list of experts from the United States and abroad paint a revealing portrait of what it means to be a principal now, how and why most graduate schools of education have failed to provide the training principals need, what the military and business sectors do to create and support their leaders and managers, what the state of the art in professional training looks like, what other nations are doing to address this problem, and how to apply the very best practices in the world to solve the crisis in school leadership. This book is honest and hard-hitting. And it offers realistic solutions. Based on the thorough analysis provided by the chapter authors, the editors of The Principal Challenge offer an imaginative proposal for a new kind of institution that will train school principals to be turn-around artists. Drawing on the new forms of executive development programs in our business schools, they propose a similar program for school principals. The approach involves a close collaboration between the new institution and entire school districts, combining face-to-face instruction with web-based delivery. The innovative curriculum they describe, like the best approaches in business and industry, uses carefully developed cases, simulations, games, action projects, seminars and journaling, The editors offer a clear conception of what it might mean to be an instructional leader, a way of thinking about what it takes for a principal to be a strategic thinker, an approach that principals can use to take advantage of the best current thinking on knowledge management and professional development, a conception of the principal as school designer, an emphasis on the use of data to drive planning, and a host of tested ideas that principals can use to lead their schools to better results.

Book Principals Perceptions of Mentoring in Montana s AA A and B High Schools

Download or read book Principals Perceptions of Mentoring in Montana s AA A and B High Schools written by Godfrey Eugene Saunders and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentoring programs have become a popular source of training and professional development for high school principals over the past few years (Darish, 2001). However, there is little research which investigates the types of mentoring support these programs provide and the effectiveness of this support (SREB, 2007). This mixed methods study was undertaken to determine the frequency of mentoring support that high school and assistant principals in Montana's AA, A and B schools experienced during their beginning years as building administrations. In addition, this study also investigated principals' perceptions of the main sources of mentoring support and to describe the support strategies that principals used in the absence of mentoring. One hundred and twenty-two high school principals and assistant principals were sent the School Administration and Leaderships Skills Inventory (SALSS) (Stout, 2001) and asked to rate their perceptions of mentoring support during their novice years as building administrators. Results from this research found that when averaged across the ISLLC Leadership Skill domains, 95% of lead principals and assistant principals indicated that mentoring support would have been beneficial during their induction years as building administrators. Follow-up interviews were conducted with five principals were to more fully understand the sources of administrative support that were available to the support strategies that they used in the absence of mentoring. Results from semistructured interviews identified, "Supportive Peer Administrators", "Personality Traits", "Self-Development" and "Experience" as themes that described principals' sources of administrative support. "Creating Supportive Relationships", "Reflection", and "Supportive Peer Administrators" were the themes that principals collectively used to describe the support strategies they used in the absence of formal or informal mentoring. Results from this study suggest that there is a lack of mentoring support networks novice high school principals practicing in the state of Montana. Findings from this research suggest that Montana's school districts and the university principal preparation programs need to make a concerted effort to establish formal mentoring programs for new school administrators. It is recommended that these organizations work collaboratively to mentoring support networks for novice principals and to use the findings from this study to guide those efforts.
