Book Communication Efficiency and Rural Development in Africa

Download or read book Communication Efficiency and Rural Development in Africa written by Komben Emmanuel Ngwainmbi and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries, especially African countries, face a myriad of problems as they try to counteract decades of national poverty and political ineffectiveness. If these countries are to secure an active role in world politics, they need communication techniques that are both broad and effective. In this book, Dr. Ngwainmbi presents a comprehensive approach to media and communication in developing countries. The author analyzes traditional methods of communication--dance, ritual, caste, religious oracles, and more--and shows how these communication agents, in addition to the basic affordable modern media, create the context for realizing development efforts. The author also examines the new world information and communication debate and raises new questions about its meaning to Africa. For more information, visit www.manigistics.com.

Book Decentralisation and Spatial Rural Development Planning in Cameroon

Download or read book Decentralisation and Spatial Rural Development Planning in Cameroon written by Neba Ndenecho and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite rapid urbanisation, Africa remains predominantly rural. This calls for decentralisation beyond the dominant concern by states and government with urban spaces. Rural areas, rural development and the future of rural settlements need to be understood and addressed in the context of the ongoing democratisation trends and the emergence and development of civil society. States have tended to tame rather than serve civil society in Africa. By establishing a single cultural reference and imposing a centralised state, African governments have exacerbated the fragmentation of civil society. However, political pluralism has slowly been gaining ground since the 1990s. This book explores the scope for implementing decentralisation programmes that focus on citizens in rural areas. For the purpose of decentralisation, civic participation in local politics and user participation in development programmes must be seen as two sides of the coin. The book focuses on spatial planning a process concerned with spatial organisation in an integrative manner, and incorporates the design, establishment and implementation of a desired spatial structural organisation of land. This is especially relevant in a context where the formulation of guidelines for spatial development at the overall level of a state is inadequate.

Book The State of Rural Roads in Cameroon

Download or read book The State of Rural Roads in Cameroon written by Achiri Mongo and published by . This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of Cameroon's citizens live in remote rural areas of the country. Their lives are plagued by extreme poverty, and they are further thwarted from improving their economic lot by the lack of traversable rural roadways, limiting their safe and efficient access to markets. The government of Cameroon, through long-standing policy and planning decisions, has perpetuated the paucity of traversable roads, particularly in rural areas. This has a profound and negative effect on the economy of the country, particularly in areas most in need of economic growth. Not only are the roads in Cameroon limited in number, but those that exist are poorly maintained-if at all-and in a state of continual deterioration. Research shows that improved roads will lessen the cost and time of transportation, the expense of maintaining vehicles, and the cost of goods and services. These effects will, in turn, improve the economy of the country and better serve the public interest. Decision-makers must embark on far-reaching measures to increase the supply and efficiency of roads in Cameroon by abolishing deeply entrenched political relationships, addressing the problems of structural weaknesses, and establishing politically neutral and competent institutions. The State of Rural Roads in Cameroon demonstrates through careful research and documentation that without these measures, living conditions for most of the people in the country will continue to decline. Not only are the roads in Cameroon limited in number, those which exist are poorly maintained-if at all-and exist in a condition of continuing deterioration. These practices indicate that a weak policy and regulatory framework, interference with responsible decision making, and conflicting public sector management strategies have led to narrowly conceived road development efforts. Research also shows that solutions to sustainable road development require dismantling and abolishing future deeply entrenched political relationships, addressing the problems of structural weaknesses, and establishing politically neutral and competent institutions. Failure to adequately invest in roads in Cameroon has impeded the cross-sectional benefits of roads and has severely restricted the effective functioning of economic and social frameworks, particularly in light of achieving the poverty-reduction strategy of Millennium Development Goals. This book demonstrates that improved roads will lessen the cost and time of transportation, the expense of maintaining vehicles, and the cost of goods and services. These effects will, in turn, improve the economy of the country and better serve the public interest.

Book Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon

Download or read book Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon written by Ajab Amin and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon is an ambitious effort as the authors try to set a blue print for Cameroon's economy. In the 1980s facing economic crisis, and as dictated by the structural adjustment programme, Cameroon sharply cut public investment expenditures before later cutting government consumption which were followed by privatisation, liquidation of public companies and reduction in the size of the public sector. All these measures are believed to have had devastating effects on the economy. Given the performance of the economy so far the authors suggest that much more effort, with a strong commitment of the main stakeholders, is required to guarantee sustainable economic development in Cameroon. Truly, very few countries in Africa possess such enormous human and natural resources as Cameroon does. This volume brings out the challenges Cameroon faces in its quest for development as well as for designing appropriate strategies for addressing those development challenges.

Book Transforming Rural Space Through Nongovernmental Efforts in Northwestern Cameroon

Download or read book Transforming Rural Space Through Nongovernmental Efforts in Northwestern Cameroon written by Lotsmart N. Fonjong and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to explore the involvement of NGOs in the development of a rural region of Cameroon that has attracted a large proportion of NGOs. The focal questions that are addressed in this volume are: what are the elements of rural development in the region and what are the forms of involvement, strategies, and impact of NGOs and their programmes on the lives of the rural masses? These questions provide the base for a critical assessment of the efforts of NGOs as a possible development myth, not only for Cameroon, but also for other developing societies.

Book Self Help Efforts and Sustainable Rural Development in Cameroon

Download or read book Self Help Efforts and Sustainable Rural Development in Cameroon written by Nchotu Christopher Mbafor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a research study aimed at assessing the path of rural development undertaken by some developing countries. It is an attempt to compare government-initiated Community development projects with those initiated by local people themselves with a view to finding out factors responsible for the difference in their level of success at planning, implementation, utilization and maintenance stages agencies. The study validated some hypotheses revealing that the development of the community was more a function of the self-help efforts of the people than Government. Government s extractive, regulative, distributive, symbolic and responsive capabilities were grossly inadequate to initiate and sustain rural development in the area. The study recommends the bottom-up approach to rural development and calls on government to re-orient its rural development policy especially in the North-West region of Cameroon. It also recommends decentralization and the granting of more autonomy to local communities especially in matters of determining their own priorities, project planning financing, and management of other local resources.
