Download or read book Efficacy of Computer assisted Reading Programs in a Pennsylvania School written by Leeann Laschenski and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is about the efficacy of computer-assisted reading programs in a Pennsylvania middle school. This study aims to determine if there is a correlation between using computer-assisted reading programs and students’ reading assessment scores. The study also analyzes the relationship between students’ reading assessment scores and their grade level, gender, and ethnicity. This study pursued to answer the following questions: What is the effect of computer-assisted instruction on students’ reading assessment scores? What is the relationship between students’ reading assessment scores and their grade level, gender, and ethnicity? In the 21st century, schools all around the country engage computer-assisted reading programs. However, schools lack evidence of its effectiveness in student learning. This problem not only affects teachers’ planning but also affects student learning. The intent and spirit of the study will be to provide research evidence highlighting the efficacy of computer-assisted reading programs. The study results answered the two research questions and concluded that computer-assisted reading programs do not have much influence on student learning. Researchers can use this information and evidence for further investigation based on the study’s findings, such as using a larger population, different subject areas, and various computer-assisted learning programs. Computer-assisted learning is still in its infancy, and educators need more evidence to support their decisions to assist students in accessing their education.

Book Handbook of Orthography and Literacy

Download or read book Handbook of Orthography and Literacy written by R. Malatesha Joshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 1203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about two decades ago, the study of writing systems and their relationship to literacy acquisition was sparse and generally modeled after studies of English language learners. This situation is now changing. As the worldwide demand for literacy continues to grow, researchers from different countries with different language backgrounds have begun examining the connection between their writing systems and literacy acquisition. This text, which derives from a NATO sponsored conference on orthography and literacy, brings together the research of 70 scholars from across the world--the largest assemblage of such experts to date. Their findings are grouped into three parts, as follows: Part I, Literacy Acquisition in Different Writing Systems, describes the relationship between orthography and literacy in twenty-five orthographic systems. This section serves as a handy reference source for understanding the orthographies of languages as diverse as Arabic, Chinese, English, Icelandic, Kannada, and Kishwahili. Part II, Literacy Acquisition From a Cross-Linguistic Perspective, makes direct comparisons of literacy acquisition in English and other orthographic systems. The overall conclusion that emerges from these eight chapters is that the depth of an orthographic system does influence literacy acquisition primarily by slowing down the acquisition of reading skills. Even so, studies show that dyslexic readers can be found across all orthographic systems whether shallow or deep, which shows that dyslexia also has internal cognitive and biological components. Part III, Literacy Acquisition: Instructional Perspectives, explores literacy acquisition from developmental and instructional perspectives and ends with a look into the future of literacy research. This Handbook is appropriate for scholars, researchers, and graduate students in such diverse fields as cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, literacy education, English as a second language, and communication disorders.

Book A Comparison of Two Computer assisted Remedial Reading Programs for Adolescent Unskilled Readers

Download or read book A Comparison of Two Computer assisted Remedial Reading Programs for Adolescent Unskilled Readers written by Matilda M. Clapp and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared the relative effectiveness of two computerized remedial reading programs in improving the reading word recognition, rate, and comprehension of adolescent readers demonstrating significant and longstanding reading difficulties. One of the programs involved was Autoskill Component Reading Subskills Program, which provides instruction in isolated letters, syllables, and words, to a point of rapid automatic responding. This program also incorporates reading disability subtypes in its approach. The second program, Read It Again. Sam, delivers a repeated reading strategy. The study also examined the feasibility of using peer tutors in association with these two programs. Grade 9 students at a secondary vocational school who satisfied specific criteria with respect to cognitive and reading ability participated. Eighteen students were randomly assigned to three matched groups, based on prior screening on a battery of reading achievement tests. Two I I groups received training with one of the computer programs; the third group acted as a control and received the remedial reading program offered within the regular classroom. The groups met daily with a trained tutor for approximately 35 minutes, and were required to accumulate twenty hours of instruction. At the conclusion of the program, the pretest battery was repeated. No significant differences were found in the treatment effects of the two computer groups. Each of the two treatment groups was able to effect significantly improved reading word recognition and rate, relative to the control group. Comprehension gains were modest. The treatment groups demonstrated a significant gain, relative to the control group, on one of the three comprehension measures; only trends toward a gain were noted on the remaining two measures. The tutoring partnership appeared to be a viable alternative for the teacher seeking to provide individualized computerized remedial programs for adolescent unskilled readers. Both programs took advantage of computer technology in providing individualized drill and practice, instant feedback, and ongoing recordkeeping. With limited cautions, each of these programs was considered effective and practical for use with adolescent unskilled readers.

Book The Effect of Computer assisted Reading Instruction on the Basic Reading Skills of Students with Developmental Disabilities

Download or read book The Effect of Computer assisted Reading Instruction on the Basic Reading Skills of Students with Developmental Disabilities written by Sara Moore Snyder and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the effects of a computer-assisted reading program, Mindplay Virtual Reading Coach (MVRC) on the basic reading skills of three elementary students served in a classroom for students with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. A multiple baseline across participants design with regulated randomization was used to evaluate the effects of MVRC on basic reading skills as assessed by three curriculum based measurement (CBM) reading assessments. While some participants showed improvements on specific CBM measures, the results were not consistent across participants nor statistically significant using non-parametric statistical analysis. The study lasted six months; however, even with daily intensive instruction, this may not have been long enough to show any significant change in reading skills. Directions for future research and implications for educational practice are discussed.

Book The Effects of a Small Group Computer Assisted Tutoring Program on Reading Outcomes for First Graders

Download or read book The Effects of a Small Group Computer Assisted Tutoring Program on Reading Outcomes for First Graders written by Bette Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation will report on a cluster randomized evaluation of a small-group computer-assisted tutoring program for struggling readers, called Team Alphie. Using computers and DVDs to supplement instruction, regular and supplementary teachers (usually special education, ESL, and Title I teachers) are able to integrate their efforts, communicate immediately about students' progress and difficulties, share results of assessments, and give students a seamless, fully integrated instructional experience in which supplementary instruction truly supplements core instruction, instead of competing with it. Thirty-three schools already using the Success for All reading program were recruited to participate in the study. The 40 lowest achieving students in each of first and second grade were pretested and two tutors at each school designated to participate in the study. Of those students, the 20 students in each grade with the lowest pretest scores were assigned to tutoring. The results of this study will help determine the effectiveness of providing remedial support to struggling beginning readers in small groups supported by technology, compared to one-to one tutoring. If the study demonstrates the program to be as effective, or more so, than individual tutoring it will have implications for policy and practice in supporting struggling readers. Most schools do not have the resources to provide tutoring to all of the struggling readers who need it but programs that combine technology and cooperative learning may provide the answer. [This paper was submitted as part of the symposium Evidence for Interventions for Struggling Readers, which was chaired by Robert E. Slavin.].
