Book Changes in Perceptions of Social Support Constructive Communication and Marital Satisfaction in Couples Participating in a Marital Enrichment Program

Download or read book Changes in Perceptions of Social Support Constructive Communication and Marital Satisfaction in Couples Participating in a Marital Enrichment Program written by Nikki N. Frousakis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marital enrichment programs have been gaining considerable recognition in the past several decades. Thousands of individuals participate in these programs yearly. However, the particular effects of enrichment programs are still under investigation, and many remain empirically unanalyzed and their effectiveness undetermined. Also, many dyadic interventions focus on helping couples improve their communication skills and become more socially supportive of their partner. This study explored changes in levels of perceived social support, constructive communication, and marital satisfaction in couples participating in a marital enrichment program, Marriage Alive. Couples who completed all 3 phases of the study (i.e., pre-seminar, post-seminar, 2 month follow-up) were included in these analyses. Results indicated that levels of support, communication, and satisfaction increased by the end of the enrichment seminar for husbands and wives. However, only gains in communication were fully maintained at follow-up. The finding of sustained improvements in communication skills has far-reaching implications, which will be discussed here. This study also explored whether changes in social support from pre-seminar to follow-up mediate the relationship between changes in constructive communication and changes in marital satisfaction; however, this model was not supported. Implications and future directions for the specific seminar under investigation are also discussed.

Book Enriching Marital Communication and Marital Adjustment of Couples from India Living in the United States

Download or read book Enriching Marital Communication and Marital Adjustment of Couples from India Living in the United States written by Olaganatha P. Vijayalakshmi and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this investigation was to offer a marriage enrichment workshop enabling the participants to increase their communication and problem solving skills, and the prevention of future marital distress through an educational experience. Marital communication and marital adjustment scores were obtained from an experimental group consisting of 16 married Indian couples living in the United States who attended a marriage enrichment workshop. These scores were compared with those scores derived from 16 married Indian couples living in the United States who participated in a marriage enrichment workshop at a later date. Nineteen hypotheses were generated which assumed that couples participating in a marriage enrichment workshop would experience a significant increase in their level of marital communication and marital adjustment. The five-session workshop was conducted on five consecutive Saturdays, the duration of each session being three hours. The format for the workshop included the exercises designed by Hendrix (1988) to improve communication skills and practice new relationship skills. The importance of creating a more loving and supportive relationship was emphasized in the workshop. The instruments used to study the dependent variables were the Marital Communication Inventory and the Marital Adjustment Test. The statistical treatment applied was Analysis Of Variance with repeated measures. Subjects were tested on the first day of the workshop, the last day of the workshop, and finally five weeks after the marriage enrichment workshop. The results indicated that the marriage enrichment workshop had moderately significant positive effect on marital communication and marital adjustment. The level of communication and adjustment showed consistent statistically significant increase over time (five week delay) after the workshop. In addition, the results established positive correlation between marital communication and marital adjustment. Finally, the content of the workshop designed by Hendrix (1988) was much appreciated by all participants and they identified remarkable similarity between the the Western thought and the Eastern culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `This book is a monumental achievement, and person-centred practitioners will be indebted to Goff Barrett-Lennard for many years to come. He has written no only a definitive study of the history of person-centred approach - what he calls a report of the "evolutionary course of a human science" - but also an accompanying commentary which is unfailingly enlightening, sometimes provocative and occasional lyrical′ - Brian Thorne, Emeritus Professor of Counselling, University of East Anglia and Co-Founder, Norwich Centre `I highly recommend this book as a reference source of major import, as bibliography, as history as art, and as a complex discussion of questions that plague the person-centred practitioner and the client-centred therapist′ - The Person-Centered Journal `If you only ever buy one book about the Person-Centred Approach, other than those written by Rogers himself, this is the one. It is a staggering achievement by one of the most knowledgeable writers in the field′ - PCP Reviews `This book is a gem, and should have wide appeal. It is an excellent introduction to person-centred psychology, written in accessible style, and it takes the reader beyond the simplicity often confused with naivety Goff Barrett-Lennard reveals a sophisticated complexity that challenges us to view the "person" with fresh eyes and an open mind′ - Tony Merry, University of East London `I strongly recommend this book as a sophisticated treatment of the client-or person-centred approach to therapy and its applications to areas outside therapy. It is also a useful overview of research on all aspects of person-centred ideas′ - Psychotherapy Research `This book... is not a single "meal" in itself but a positive "larder" containing every imaginable staple food and condiment all exquisitely and thoroughly researched. The book took Godfrey T Barrett-Lennard 20 years to write and it will stand as a reference text for person-centred specialists for longer than that... an essential reference text... and a pantry full of delicious surprises′ - Counselling and Psychotherapy, The Journal of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy `Probably the most important piece of work on the person-centred approach to have emerged in recent years... an essential source of reference for anyone with a serious interest in the person-centred approach′ - Counselling News Written by an ex-student and long-time colleague of Carl Rogers, this in-depth and challenging book charts the development of person-centred therapy from its origins through to the present day. Godfrey T Barrett-Lennard traces the central concepts and key figures within the movement, set against the contemporary historical, social and political context. As an integrated overview of the person-centred approach, Carl Rogers′ Helping System presents a wealth of fascinating ideas and information which is linked to a fresh, incisive account of the unfolding theory, process and research.

Book An Evaluation of the Impact of a Couples Enrichment Program on Relationship Satisfaction Communication Conflict Resolution and Forgiveness

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Impact of a Couples Enrichment Program on Relationship Satisfaction Communication Conflict Resolution and Forgiveness written by Chelsi Klentz Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationship enrichment programs serve to promote the development of healthy intimate relationships (Halford, Markman, Kling, & Stanley, 2003). There are hundreds of relationship enrichment programs available in the United States, alone (smartmarriages.com, 2013). Weekend to Remember is a faith-based relationship enrichment program which has not yet been the subject of empirical evaluation. This is not unusual. A select few of these types of interventions have received research attention, and little of this research has been published in peer reviewed journals. This study aims to contribute to this small body of existing literature by examining the effectiveness of the Weekend to Remember program on couples' relationship satisfaction, communication, conflict resolution, and forgiveness. Maintenance of these changes, and the influences of gender, length of marriage, and level of religiosity on the study variables were also examined. The relationship between forgiveness and conflict resolution was also of interest. This was measured through pre, post, and follow-up assessment of couples, using comparisons between a wait list control group and treatment group. Participants included 49 straight couples. The present study used a longitudinal and correlational design to observe changes in participants after engaging in the Weekend to Remember relationship enrichment program. Analyses involved repeated measurement of the same subjects compared to a wait list control group at two (two surveys administered one month apart before attending Weekend to Remember) and three (pre, post, and follow-up assessment) time points. Analyses also examined the relationship between demographic and study variables. Both the couple and individuals were the units of analysis. Results indicated that participation in Weekend to Remember increased healthy conflict resolution and this gain was maintained at eight week follow-up. Results did not support an increase or maintenance of relationship satisfaction or forgiveness. Over time, communication did significantly improve, and this gain was maintained. Relationship satisfaction upon entering the intervention, gender, length of relationship, and religiosity were not found to predict significant differences in the study variables. Conflict resolution and forgiveness significantly correlated with one another at pre and follow-up, but not at post assessment.
