Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of three different types of warm-up on swimming performance in NCAA Division I swimmers. Eight male and eight female swimmers utilized three warm-up protocols prior to performing 50-yard (45.72-meter) freestyle swim trials each trial in counterbalanced order and separated by 48 hours. The warm-up protocols consisted of: (1) no warm-up, (2) short warm-up (50-yards at 40% maximal effort and 50-yards at 90%), (3) regular warm-up (swimmers own pre-competition warm-up). Following the warm-up regimen, participants rested for three minutes and completed a 50-yard freestyle swim trial. Heart rate pre- and post- trial, diving distance, reaction time, post warm-up RPE, post 50-yard trial RPE, and stroke count were measured. Times for 50-yard swim were significantly (p = 0.03) different among warm-ups. Mean 50-yard time was significantly (p = 0.01) faster after regular warm-up (24.95 " 1.53 sec) compared to short warm-up (25.26 " 1.61 sec) and approached significance between no- and regular- warm-ups (p = 0.06); however, no significant difference was found between no- (25.19 "1.54 sec) and short warm-ups (p = 0.59) on 50-yard time. Individual data indicated that 19% of participants performed their best 50-yard time after short warm-up, 37% after no-, and 44% after regular warm-up. Heart rate was significantly (p = 0.01) higher after regular warm-up (100 " 13 b/min) compared to no warm-up (88 " 18 b/min) and approached significance between short- and regular warm-ups (p = 0.07); however, no significant difference was observed between no- and short warm-ups (92 " 19 b/min) (p = 0.32). Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Overtraining has become a very important topic in athletics over the past few decades. Resulting from an imbalance between training stress and recovery, the manifestation of overtraining is unique to each individual, with deviations in physiological, psychological, and performance variables. Regardless of the overwhelming amount of research, there is a lack of any comprehensive studies addressing all components of overtraining. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects training load had on performance and psychological variables across a competitive season in collegiate female swimmers. Participants included 19 Division I female swimmers (Age: 19.74±1.19 yrs) who completed 6 tethered swimming tests, yielding the mean force (Fmean) produced during a 20 second period, as well as completing 7 Recovery-Stress Questionnaires (RESTQ-76), yielding a Total Recovery-Stress Score (TRSS). RPE scores were also collected for every training session from each athlete. From this, Session RPE was calculated by multiplying RPE by the meters completed in the training session yielding an arbitrary number representative of the individuals' internal training load. Utilizing the Session RPE data across the entire season, the participants were categorized into High, Middle, and Low training load groups (TLG). Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was (1) to compare maturational pace between the female collegiate swimmers and non-athletic controls and (2) to determine whether maturational pace differs as a function of performance level. Maturational pace can be quantified retrospectively in women using age at menarche (AaM), with younger AaM corresponding to a faster maturational pace and older AaM a slower pace. Collegiate swimmers were significantly older at menarche (13.60 years ± 1.52 SD) than non-athletic controls (12.75 years ± 1.44 SD). In addition, the top-performing third of college swimmers in our sample were significantly older at menarche (14.06 years ± 1.59 SD) than the bottom-performing third (13.32 years ± 1.35 SD). We can conclude that (1) collegiate swimmers are older at menarche than controls and (2) swim performance is associated with later ages at menarche.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Female swimmers wear apparel in practice and competition with minimal coverage, which has the potential to impact body image. During practice, swimmers can choose suits based on individual preferences, such as appearance (e.g., avoiding tan lines) or function (e.g, fit). This study sought to investigate suit preferences and its relationship to body surveillance and confidence. In total, 115 collegiate female swimmers completed an online survey including the State Sport-Confidence Inventory, the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale, and a swimsuit choice measure. Independent t-tests found no significant differences in body surveillance or confidence between two groups: swimmers who chose suits based on function vs. appearance. However, qualitative findings indicated swimmers were cognizant of their appearance and selected suits based on environmental factors. Overall, findings indicate that many swimmers think about appearance when selecting practice apparel, which has the potential to impact body image and performance.
