Book excerpt: The general purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the operant conditioner's behavior during the baseline upon subsequent operant conditioning of opinion statements emitted by freshmen undergraduate students. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following research questions: Is it possible to systematically condition opinion statements in a verbal conditioning situation that resembles a counseling interview? Does the behavior of the operant conditioner during the baseline have any influence on subsequent conditioning of opinion statements in a verbal conditioning situation resembling a counseling interview? Is there a difference in the number of opinion statements emitted in a verbal conditioning situation resembling a counseling interview for males and females? Is there any interaction between the baseline behavior of the operant conditioner, the sex of the subject, and the stage of treatment in the conditioning of opinion statements? Subjects for the study were freshmen undergraduate students. Two experiments were conducted in which each subject was seen individually twice in an interview setting. Treatments were administered in an ABAB design with each stage lasting twenty-five minutes. All interviews were taped and listeners listened to the tapes and tabulated opinion and non-opinion statements for each stage. The operant conditioners recorded opinion statements as they occurred by pressing foot switches that activated counters in another room. The correlation between the numbers of opinion statements tallied by the operant conditioners and the listeners was .98 in both experiments. In experiment one, a trained undergraduate operant conditioner administered four treatments to forty subjects. There were five males and five females in each treatment condition. Book excerpt: The principal proposition tested in this study was that two different non-verbal stimuli, a bell-tone and a moderate shock, would act as reinforcing stimuli to amount of talk occurring in a fixed time interval. The secondary proposition was that manifest anxiety, as measured by the Taylor Anxiety Scale would be positively correlated with rate of speech in the conditioning process and that the difference between correlations in experimental treatments and control treatment would be significant. Three groups of subjects were used: one group received a bell-tone at fifteen second intervals during which they talked to three specially prepared slides fo the Thematic Apperception Test; a second group was administered a moderate shock every fifteen seconds; and a third group was used as a control group. The highest mean verbal response was obtained by the shock group on all three pictures and on the total response; the next highest was obtained by the bell group on all trials; the lowest response was given by the control group on all trials. The difference between the bell group and the control group on total response rate approached significance; the difference between the shock group and the control group was significant; the difference between the bell group and the shock group was not significant. The difference between the bell group and the control gorup was significant on trials one and two, but not on trial three; the same results were obtained for the differences between the shock group and the control group. On none of the trials was the difference between the bell group and the shock group significant. The correlation between rate of response and anxiety, as measured by the Taylor Anxiety Scale, in the bell group was .243; between anxiety and rate of response in the shock group was .869; and in the control group, -.250. The hypothesis that the three groups were from a common population with respect to correlation was rejected. The difference between the correlations obtained in the bell group and the shock group was significant; between those obtained in the shock group and the control group, not significant. The results are interpreted as lending support to the contention that operant conditioning can be extended to human behavior. The possibility that reinforcing stimuli do not have to satisfy a drive to be reinforcing, but may frustrate it and still be reinforcing, is discussed. Proposals for additional research in this area are offered.
