Malaysia needs a generation who are creative and critical thinkers, thus it is vital to enhance students’ attitudes towards science. As students spend most of their time in a classroom, therefore, shaping students’ perceptions of science classroom environment is crucial in enhancing their attitudes towards science. This book is adapted and modified from a master’s degree thesis entitled: “Relationship between Form 4 Students’ Perceptions of Science Classroom Environment and Attitudes towards Science” of the first author. This book includes analysis of students’ perceptions of science classroom environment and attitudes towards science. This book attempts to answer questions regarding the level of students’ perceptions of science classroom environment, the level of students’ attitudes towards the effect of gender and school locations on students’ perceptions of science classroom environment and attitudes towards science, and the influence of perceptions of science classroom environment on students’ attitudes towards science. Even when students were able to return to the classroom, restrictions placed changed how instruction was delivered. Social distancing and limited sharing of supplies especially affected live interactions. To study changes affecting the students and the lessons learned from the changes to instruction, this research seeks to consider: in what ways has virtual learning during COVID-19 impacted student perception of their learning in a chemistry course? Previous research on virtual labs and instructions along with motivation and perceptions of school guided the research. A qualitative case study within a chemistry classroom asked students about their experiences and how the periods of time before and after the COVID-19 school closures affected their science learning. The results from the questionnaire were holistically and in vivo coded then grouped into themes to show sentiments of students regarding motivation, perception of course content, and utility of labs. The responses showed a significant enough difference in the increase of narratives towards negative responses compared to positive ones when making the comparison between the time before and during the pandemic. The impacts, negative and positive, of students in situations, can be studied and analyzed for future research and possible predictability of student response to major changes in the classroom environment. Giving students time for self-reflection and guided questions will help define the goals of students and feelings about major school changes.

Book excerpt: The mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is to establish "high and rigorous standards for what teachers should know and be able to do, to certify teachers who meet those standards, and to advance other education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools." In response to a request from the U.S. Congress, the National Research Council developed a framework for evaluating programs that award advanced-level teacher certification and applied that framework in an evaluation of the impacts of the NBPTS. Specifically, this book addresses the impacts on students, teachers, and the educational system in this country. Assessing Accomplished Teaching finds that teachers who earn board certification are more effective at improving their students' achievement than other teachers, but school systems vary greatly in the extent to which they recognize and make use of board-certified teachers. Many of the questions on the evaluation framework could not be answered because the data have not been collected, and the report makes recommendations for the kinds of research that are needed to fully evaluate the impacts of board certification by the NBPTS.
