Book excerpt: Collaborative inquiry within undergraduate research experiences (UREs) is an effective curriculum tool to support student growth. This study seeks to understand how collaborative inquiry within undergraduate biology student experiences are affected within faculty mentored experiences and non-mentored experiences at a large private southeastern university. Undergraduate biology students engaged in UREs (faculty as mentor and non-mentor experiences) were examined for statistically significant differences in student self-efficacy. Self-efficacy was measured in three subcomponents (thinking and working like a scientist, scientific self-efficacy, and scientific identity) from student responses obtained in an online survey. Responses were analyzed using a nonparametric equivalent of a t test (Mann Whitney U test) to make comparisons between faculty mentored and non-mentored student groups. The conclusions of this study highlight the statistically significant effect of faculty mentoring in all three subcomponents. Faculty and university policy makers can apply these findings to develop further support for effective faculty mentoring practices in UREs.

Book excerpt: Introducing innovation courses to engineering and computer science has been shown to increase retention and interest in the discipline. These courses have generally been high commitment, in that they take place over an entire semester or more, and often add additional requirements to a degree program. However, the impacts of innovation interventions have not been explored in biology undergraduates with respect to grit, retention, biology interest, and biology self-efficacy. The impact of the duration and workload of the intervention have also not been evaluated. This study examined whether introducing scientific innovation modules increased the grit, retention, biology interest, and biology self-efficacy of undergraduate biology students. Online modules that took approximately 20 minutes per week over four weeks were added to the learning management system for an introductory biology lab course and a course on Careers in Biology. Both courses contained students from a variety of science majors, including both Biology Bachelor of Science (Biology BS) and Biology Bachelor of Arts (Biology BA) students. Half of the students in each course completed online modules on scientific innovation while the other half completed modules on financial literacy as a comparison group. This mixed-methods study used pre- and post- surveys, institutional data, and interviews to test four hypotheses: exposure to a scientific innovation course would increase biology undergraduates' i) grit, ii) retention, iii) biology interest, and iv) biology self-efficacy. The survey included the Short Grit Scale (GRIT-S), Brief Index of Student Retention (BISR), Biology Self-Efficacy Scale for Nonmajors, and a custom scale to measure biology interest. Institutional data (intended/declared major, course schedule, and grades) were collected to determine if students dropped the major, left the university, or discontinued the biology sequence. Exit interviews were also conducted to determine students' opinions and any effects that may not show up in the quantitative data. Pre- and post- survey results (N=139) do not support the hypotheses, with no significant main effects of group (completion of treatment vs comparison modules) or interactions between group and time (indicating an impact after the intervention but not before) but other interesting effects were observed. Overall, students in the Careers in Biology course responded to the treatment as hypothesized whereas students in the introductory biology lab course (mainly Biology BS) students did not respond as predicted. Underrepresented minority students responded positively to the treatment with respect to biology interest, supporting the established notion that showing these students how to apply their knowledge and help their community increases interest in the major. Another interesting finding is that students generally lost interest in biology over the course of the semester but students who expressed an interest in entrepreneurship did not experience this loss of interest in biology. Institutional data showed that pre- scores for biology self-efficacy were significantly lower for those who later ended up failing a course that semester than those who did not fail During the interviews, students articulated that they preferred to be exposed to scientific innovation and diverse career options during their freshman or sophomore years., Job satisfaction and helping the world were also important factors for choosing their major. This study provides insight into the impacts low-commitment innovation courses on biology undergraduates. While the hypotheses were not supported, the observed effects may inform the development of programs to foster grit, retention, interest, and self-efficacy as well as future scientific innovation courses for biology undergraduates.

However, undergraduate research done independently under a faculty member's guidance or as part of an internship, regardless of its individual benefits, is inherently limited in its overall impact. Faculty members and sponsoring companies have limited time and funding to support undergraduate researchers, and most institutions have available (or have allocated) only enough human and financial resources to involve a small fraction of their undergraduates in such experiences. Many more students can be involved as undergraduate researchers if they do scientific research either collectively or individually as part of a regularly scheduled course. Course-based research experiences have been shown to provide students with many of the same benefits acquired from a mentored summer research experience, assuming that sufficient class time is invested, and several different potential advantages. In order to further explore this issue, the Division on Earth and Life Studies and the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education organized a convocation meant to examine the efficacy of engaging large numbers of undergraduate students who are enrolled in traditional academic year courses in the life and related sciences in original research, civic engagement around scientific issues, and/or intensive study of research methods and scientific publications at both two- and four-year colleges and universities. Participants explored the benefits and costs of offering students such experiences and the ways that such efforts may both influence and be influenced by issues such as institutional governance, available resources, and professional expectations of faculty. Integrating Discovery-Based Research into the Undergraduate Curriculum summarizes the presentations and discussions from this event.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a mentoring program on self-efficacy beliefs. High-risk undergraduate students at Arizona State University majoring in Public Health and other closely-related fields represent this study's sample. Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory guides this study's theoretical framework. This study used a mixed method, action research design. Participants took a pre-test that measures their self-efficacy and registered the barriers to their academic success; following that, they enrolled and participated in a mentoring program. Upon completion of the program, they completed a post-test to evaluate any changes to their perspectives. Non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were applied to the surveys. Throughout the mentoring program, participants completed field notes and I completed a journal about our interactions. These, along with two focus group discussions, were analyzed using grounded theory in addition to the pre- and post-tests. The surveys found that the mentoring program impacted their self-efficacy in overcoming educational barriers the qualitative data showed a strong correlation between the intervention and perceived confidence. This included their perceived ability to perform difficult or unusual tasks, but also their ability to overcome barriers.

The focus on developing essential skills needed for individual ability to be literate in science has been at the forefront of most K-12 science curricula. Reform efforts have begun to stretch into the postsecondary arena as well, with an ever increasing dialogue regarding the need for attention to science literacy by college students, especially non-science majors. This study set out to investigate how the use of self-regulatory interventions (specifically, goal setting, concept mapping, and reflective writing) affected student biology self-efficacy and biological literacy. This study employed a qualitative research design, analyzing three case studies. Participants in the study received ten self-regulatory interventions as a set of portfolio assignments. Portfolio work was qualitatively analyzed and coded for self-efficacy, as well as evidence of biological literacy. A biology self-efficacy survey was administered pre- and post- to provide a means of self-efficacy data triangulation. Literacy data was supported via a biological literacy rubric, constructed specifically for this study. Results indicated that mastery experiences were the source of biology self-efficacy. Self-efficacy for specific tasks increased over time, and changes in self-efficacy were corroborated by the self-efficacy survey. Students were found to express biological literacy at nominal, functional, or conceptual levels depending on the specific task. This was supported by data from the biological literacy rubric scores. Final conclusions and implications for the study indicated the need for further research with more samples of students in similar and different contexts. Given the fact that the literature in this area is sparse, the results obtained here have only begun to delve into this area of research. Generalization to other biology courses or contexts outside of the one presented in this study was cautioned until future studies can be conducted.

Book excerpt: The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program of the US National Science Foundation has been a primary force for raising the success and graduation of minority students in STEM for 30 years. Increasing the number of underrepresented students earning baccalaureate degrees, and entering graduate school in STEM is the goal of LSAMP. This goal has been nearly achieved through the formation of alliances of degree granting institutions of higher learning, varying from community colleges to major research institutions. Currently there are 59 alliances including more than 400 institutions. LSAMP is responsible for more than 650,000 bachelor’s degrees earned by minority students in STEM. The papers for this Research Topic should focus on the use of LSAMP activities, programs and collaborations to develop pathways to success and graduation of STEM majors from minority groups that underrepresented in STEM. These pathways can include any segment from pre-college through graduate school. Areas of special interest include mentoring, research experiences, transitions between levels and novel approaches for retention. The studies should be research based and rigorous. They can be pure research studies, curriculum and design or literature reviews but they must be at a cutting edge level and be subject to detailed review and assessment.
