Download or read book Ultrasound written by M.H. Repacholi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the International School of Radiation Damage and Protection at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Sci entific Culture in Erice, Italy, September 6-15, 1985. The sixth course of the School, entitled "Advances in Applications, Biological Effects, and Dosimetry of Ultrasound," provided an in-depth review of all facets of ultra sound interactions and their biological effects on living systems, allowing an assessment of the hazard potential of the various applications of ultra sound. Particular reference was made to possible health risks associated with medical ultrasound exposure since this use is by far the most prevalent. Since the initial application of ultrasound to submarine detection, medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications have become predominant over the past 20 years. The question of safety of this physical agent is an extremely important one. In many industrialized countries most pregnant women receive at least one diagnostic ultrasound examination before the birth of the child. Thus, potential hazards to the fetus are of prime concern. This problem has been aggravated by the fact that the medical diagnostic applications of ultrasound have far outpaced research efforts on biological effects. A further compounding factor of concern to clinicians and scientists has been the use of higher and higher intensities by the manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, particularly higher peak pulse intensities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound is quickly becoming the technique of choice in the measurement of bone density. Proving cheaper and more portable than previous techniques, and also having the advantage of not using ionizing radiation, it is likely that the use of various ultrasound systems will become increasingly widespread in clinical practice. This book is a comprehensive review of the systems currently available, preceded by a summary of the basic science of ultrasound and concluding with a section on clinical studies, trials and experience in a number of countries. Likely future developments are also discussed, bringing the book completely up to date.

Download or read book Basic Physics of Ultrasonographic Imaging written by N. M. Tole and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2005 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume on basic physics of ultrasonographic imaging procedures provides clear and concise information on the physics behind ultrasound examinations in diagnostic imaging. It attempts to present the subject from a simple approach that should make it possible for the target groups to comprehend the important concepts which form the physical basis of ultrasonic imaging. The main target group of this manual is radiological technologists and radiographers working with diagnostic ultrasound in developing countries. Clinicians and nurse practitioners may also find the simple presentation appealing. A conscious effort has been made to avoid detailed mathematical treatment of the subject. The emphasis is on simplicity.
Download or read book Ultrasound Elastography written by Monica Lupsor-Platon and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastography, the science of creating noninvasive images of mechanical characteristics of tissues, has been rapidly evolving in recent years. The advantage of this technique resides in the ability to rapidly detect and quantify the changes in the stiffness of soft tissues resulting from specific pathological or physiological processes. Ultrasound elastography is nowadays applied especially on the liver and breast, but the technique has been increasingly used for other tissues including the thyroid, lymph nodes, spleen, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, prostate, and the musculoskeletal and vascular systems. This book presents some of the applications of strain and shear-wave ultrasound elastography in hepatic, pancreatic, breast, and musculoskeletal conditions.
Download or read book The Tumor written by John Grisham and published by Focused Ultrasound Foundation. This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Grisham says THE TUMOR is the most important book he has ever written. In this short book, he provides readers with a fictional account of how a real, new medical technology could revolutionize the future of medicine by curing with sound. THE TUMOR follows the present day experience of the fictional patient Paul, an otherwise healthy 35-year-old father who is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Grisham takes readers through a detailed account of Paul’s treatment and his family’s experience that doesn’t end as we would hope. Grisham then explores an alternate future, where Paul is diagnosed with the same brain tumor at the same age, but in the year 2025, when a treatment called focused ultrasound is able to extend his life expectancy. Focused ultrasound has the potential to treat not just brain tumors, but many other disorders, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, and prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer. For more information or to order a free hardcopy of the book, please visit The Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s website www.fusfoundation.org. Here you will find a video of Grisham on the TEDx stage with the Foundation’s chairman and a Parkinson’s patient who brings the audience to its feet sharing her incredible story of a focused ultrasound “miracle.” Readers will get a taste of the narrative they expect from Grisham, but this short book will also educate and inspire people to be hopeful about the future of medical innovation.

Download or read book Therapeutic Ultrasound written by Victor Frenkel and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therapeutic ultrasound can be broadly defined as the application of ultrasound waves for biomedical purposes other than imaging. For imaging, the manner by which the ultrasound waves propagate is designed so that energy interactions with the tissue being imaged (or in the path of the waves on their way to the target or beyond) do not cause any undesired or harmful effects. Therapeutic ultrasound exposures, on the other hand, are specifically tailored for creating effects, where these can range from mild and reversible to more robust and irreversible, depending on the application. This book presents a detailed description of the different ultrasound mechanisms for producing bio-effects, and the manner by which the multitude of these interactions between the ultrasound energy and biological tissues can be employed for a host of therapeutic applications.
