Book Environmental Enrichment of Pigs

Download or read book Environmental Enrichment of Pigs written by Emma Fàbrega i Romans and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pigs have a strong motivation to explore and root. In conventional pig husbandry systems, this need is difficult to fulfil, unless adequate enrichment materials are provided. This book summarises how enrichment strategies for pigs have evolved over the last few decades in different countries and provides a vast array of possibilities to enhance the exploratory needs of pigs. The role of enrichment material on avoidance of tail biting outbreaks or as an element triggering positive emotions in pigs is also discussed.

Book Effect of Rearing Environment and Environmental Enrichment on Behavior and Neural Development in Young Pigs

Download or read book Effect of Rearing Environment and Environmental Enrichment on Behavior and Neural Development in Young Pigs written by Temple Grandin and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing concern about the welfare of farm animals. In two trials, forty-eight 7.97 and 10.78 kg Hampshire-sired crossbred pigs were housed in either a complex environment (CE) or a simple environment (SE) for 9.5 weeks. The SE consisted of two pigs, in 1.22 x 1.22-m pens in a closed building. The CE consisted of 12 pigs in an outdoor pen with straw bedding, daily petting by people and a variety of objects such as cloth strips, chains, balls, boards, and newspapers. The objects were changed daily. In half the animals the somatosensory cortex was Golgi-Cox impregnated. SE pigs had greater dendritic branching and larger somas than CE pigs. Total ring intersections were 55.70 $pm$ 2.38 and 48.62 $pm$ 2.38, respectively. SE pigs engaged in greater amounts of belly nosing, which may have stimulated the cortex. There was no effect on visual cortex. The SE pigs were more excitable and aggressive. CE pigs approached a strange man more rapidly and were more willing to walk through a narrow chute. Further experiments indicated that the addition of small amounts of environmental enrichment to barren pens greatly reduced blind excitability ratings. Petting by a person (mingling) for 5 minutes once a week was effective. Two enrichment treatments such as mingling and objects (hanging rubber hoses) were more effective than a single treatment. Environmental effects on handling behavior were complex. In one trial, mingling and objects reduced the amount of prodding required to move pigs through a chute. In another trial, mingled pigs were more difficult to drive. There may be an optimal level of tameness for pigs which will be marketed for slaughter. In barren pens, hanging cloth strips (objects) reduced fighting in newly mixed pigs. One week of exposure to objects prior to mixing reduced biting and pulling of the objects during mixing. Previous exposure to objects prior to mixing had no effect on fighting. When objects were first introduced, activity was intense, and it leveled off at a lower level. The pigs appear to seek stimulation. Simple enrichment procedures may alleviate the effects of sensory restriction.

Book Ethological and physiological indicators of positive emotions in juvenile pigs Sus scrofa

Download or read book Ethological and physiological indicators of positive emotions in juvenile pigs Sus scrofa written by Lisa McKenna and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural behavior of pigs is adapted to very complex environments and is characterized by a high proportion of exploratory behaviour. In modern, intensive husbandry systems, the behaviour pigs would show in natural environments cannot be expressed to the degree that is necessary for the animals to maintain a positive emotional state. Health and behaviour problems arise in intensive pig husbandry, leading to stress and negative emotional states in the animals. This animal welfare problem fuels growing concerns of the public. As negative emotional states, such as stress, are more intensely expressed and potentially life threatening, they are easier to study. The expression of positive emotion, even though it is expressed more subtle, is no less important. This study was therefore conducted with the objective to identify, elicit and measure behavioural and physiological indicators of positive emotion in pigs. With the ability to facilitate a positive emotional state, the welfare of pigs kept in intensive livestock production systems can be greatly improved.

Book Farm Animal Behaviour 2nd Edition

Download or read book Farm Animal Behaviour 2nd Edition written by Ingvar Ekesbo and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely updated and revised, Farm Animal Behaviour 2nd Edition continues to provide essential information on normal and stereotypic behaviours in a wide variety of farm animals to help in the assessment and diagnosis of their health and welfare. Comprehensive coverage of a range of farmed animals from: horses, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs through to domesticated poultry, deer, ostrich and many other species. Innate, learned and social behaviours are described together with activity, vision and hearing to build a picture of normal behaviours presented in a clear and consistent way for each species. Stereotypic behaviours, injuries and disease, resulting from improper management practices, are outlined in detail. For the second edition Professor Stefan Gunnarsson joins the author team and contributes his long-standing knowledge, clinical and scientific expertise. Many new snapshot photographs in full colour throughout have been added to further illustrate behaviours as they occur. New information on normal and stereotypic behaviours is included. The explosion in new research is captured with a wealth of new references and pointers for further reading. A consistent approach to each species allows for easy comparison. Farm Animal Behaviour 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive yet concise background for all students, postgraduates and practitioners in veterinary medicine, animal science, welfare and ethology.

Book Comprehensive Evaluation of Well being in Pigs

Download or read book Comprehensive Evaluation of Well being in Pigs written by Bjarne Kornbek Pedersen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to provide comparative scientific evidence for the well-being or ill-being of pigs while residing in different environments under intensive housing conditions. Four categories of indices--viz., productivity, including growth and feed-efficiency performance and health; physiology; immunology; and behavior were used for assessing the well-being of the animals involved. Productive, health, physiologic, immunophysiologic, and behavioral traits related to indicators of well-being were measured in 512 growing-finishing pigs in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment, the two factors being environmental enrichment and pen size. The results with respect to productive performance indicated that pigs' body-weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were similar regardless of treatment. However, lesion scores throughout the experiment were consistently higher in the enriched pens as compared to the barren. Based on the results for the productivity indicators it is suggested that the enriched environment did not improve pig well-being as compared to that of conspecifics in the relatively barren confinement environment. The results with respect to the physiologic traits--viz., gastric ulceration, adrenal weight, basal cortisol concentration, and ACTH challenge--as well as the immunophysiologic traits--viz., intradermal response to phytohemagglutinin and delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to sheep red blood cells did not differ due to treatment variables. Based on these indicators it was concluded that pig well-being was similar across treatments. Results with respect to behavioral indicators--viz., general behavior patterns, use of manipulanda, reaction to novelty, and defecation patterns revealed only few differences due to the treatment variables imposed. However, a test of the pigs' reaction to a novel situation indicated that animals in the enriched pens were less fearful than those in the barren. Although most of the indicators did not differ across treatments, the results did suggest that provision of enrichment features might have rewarded the pigs in a positive way and led to improved psychological well-being as compared to that experienced by conspecifics in the nonenriched environment.
