This book was released on 2018 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EMG was measured bilaterally at 6 separate lower extremity muscles during five different stepping protocols (self-selected level 1 [SSL1], self-selected level 8 [SSL8], +20% self-selected [SS+20], -20% self-selected [SS-20], and 80 steps per min resistance level 1 [80SL1]). 22 healthy male and female adults (aged = 23.52 ± 4.23 years) signed an informed consent prior to the study. Self-selected cadence was established during 10 mins of stepping with a RPE between 12 and 16. Participants then performed all 5-min protocols in randomized order with 5 min of rest between each. Due to parametric violations, mean EMG (mEMG) and peak EMG (pEMG) were analyzed with non-parametric tests. A 1 x 4 Friedman test was conducted to determine statistical significant difference in mEMG and pEMG between min 2 and min 4 of stepping in each muscle. Following a statistically significant Friedman test (p

Download or read book A Comparison of Oxygen Consumption RPE and Lower Limb EMG Activity in Toning Versus Running Shoes on Uphill Level and Downhill Walking written by Avneet Chatha and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OBJECTIVES: Comparing electromyography and physiological measures while walking on various inclines in unstable and stable shoes.METHODS: Eleven healthy females walked on treadmill at +10%, 0% and -10% grade for five minutes each, at self-selected pace, in stable and unstable shoes. The two sessions were done 3weeks apart during which the subjects used unstable shoes for regular activities. Electromyography of lower limb muscles, absolute and relative oxygen consumption, perceived exertion rating and heart rate was calculated.RESULTS: Tibialis anterior activation varied significantly with shoe type, irrespective of grade. Soleus, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris showed activation differences in specific gait phases. There was a main effect for absolute and relative oxygen consumption, RPE and HR only with grade. Shoe type showed no effect. CONCLUSION: Though there is no difference in overall physiological variables, but changes in electromyography in specific phases highlight possible muscle toning benefits of unstable shoes.

Book Muscle Activation During Aquatic and Land Treadmill Running

Download or read book Muscle Activation During Aquatic and Land Treadmill Running written by W. Matthew Silvers and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose. Lower extremity muscle activation during land (TM) and aquatic (ATM) treadmill running was compared to gain insight on the specificity of ATM running. Methods. Twelve male runners performed land treadmill (TM) and ATM (xiphoid depth) running at 174.4, 201.2, and 228.0 m·min−1 while metabolic (VO2) and surface electromyographic (EMG) data were recorded from the tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius (GAS), biceps femoris (BF), vastus medialis (VM), and rectus femoris (RF). The final ten strides at each speed were selected for EMG data analyses. Relative timing and duration were normalized to the stride cycle. Muscle activation was normalized to maximal voluntary contractions (%MVC), performed prior to, and after, TM and ATM trials. In addition, ATM muscle activation was expressed as a percentage of TM (%TM) at each speed. Results. Swing and stride duration were extended for ATM (p=0.00). The order of muscle recruitment was similar between modalities, except for earlier VM onset during ATM. ATM relative durations for VM and RF1 were extended, reduced for GAS and RF2, and similar for TA and BF compared to TM. ATM %MVC was lower for GAS and VM (p0.02), greater for RF1 (p=0.01), and similar for TA, BF, and RF2 (p0.19) compared to TM %MVC. ATM %TM was lower for GAS and RF2, but higher for TA, RF1, VM and BF. ATM and TM VO2 were comparable (p>0.180). In general, ATM and TM demonstrated earlier muscle onsets, extended relative durations, and greater %MVC and VO2 with speed. Conclusion. The cumulative effect of buoyancy and drag during ATM may have reduced the need for muscular support during stance and increased emphasis on forward propulsion. Notable differences in muscle activation may negatively or positively affect muscular adaptations during chronic ATM run training. Despite similarities in VO2, the observations for muscle activation remain inconclusive in regard to implications for training specificity as they pertain to land-based running. Ultimately, an individual's specific needs and goals for training still must be considered when prescribing ATM exercise.

Book The Effect of Footwear on Muscle Activation During Exercise Induced fatigue

Download or read book The Effect of Footwear on Muscle Activation During Exercise Induced fatigue written by Mohamed Saad and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the effect of wearing two different types of running footwear: minimalist (MIN), 178g, versus shod, (SH), 349g on lower limb muscle activation during exercise-induced fatigue. Ten well-trained long-distance runners (aged 29.0±7.5; BMI 38.6 ± 6.5 kg m−2; Volume oxygen uptake (VO2max) 61.6±7.3 mL min−1 Kg−1) partook in the study. The participants ran seven (7 X 1000 m) high-intensity running intervals at speeds within 94 - 97% of their maximal aerobic capacity. These fatiguing trials were completed on a 200-m, unbanked Mondo surface indoor running track. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from five lower limb muscles: biceps femoris, medial gastrocnemius, gluteus maximus, tibialis anterior, and vastus lateral. The integrated EMG (iEMG) and root mean square (RMS), EMG frequency and Stride Frequency were compared for the two running conditions. Findings reveal that the only statistically significant main effect of the shoe occurred in iEMG (F (1, 9) = 6.137, P = .035), and RMS (F (1, 9) = .5.573, P = .043) for the medial gastrocnemius as a function of wearing MIN. In addition, there was only a main effect of the shoe on the stride frequency (F (1, 9) = 9.151, P = .014) as a function of wearing MIN. The mean stride frequency values were higher in MIN conditions (92.800 stride/minutes) compared to SH conditions (90.600 stride/minutes). This study suggests that MIN footwear used in this study did not affect EMG amplitude (iEMG and RMS) or EMG frequency of lower limb muscles during exercise-induced fatigue when compared to SH due to low minimalist index. Additionally, results showed that MIN footwear increased stride frequency compared with SH footwear.
