Book excerpt: The magnitude of improvements in muscular strength and size are influenced by the volume and intensity of a resistance training program. While it is clearly advantageous for resistance-trained individuals to utilize programming specific to these goals, it not clear which is more important. Therefore the purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of focusing on training volume versus intensity on changes in muscle size and strength. Changes in muscular strength and size were examined in 29 resistance-trained men following 8 weeks of resistance training. Participants were randomly assigned to either a high volume (VOL, n = 14, 4 x 10 - 12RM, 1min rest) or high intensity (INT, n = 15, 4 x 3 - 5RM, 3min rest) resistance training program. Lean body mass, lean arm and leg mass, were assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, while ultrasound images (VL-vastus lateralis, RF-rectus femoris, PM-pectoralis major, and TB-triceps brachii) were used to assess changes in muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and thickness (MT).

In this study subjects trained all major muscle groups twice a week performing nine exercises. One group applied high-intensity training (HIT) and did only one drop-set of each exercise to the point of momentary muscular failure, whereas the other group performed as many repetitions as possible in each set and did three sets of each exercise. Both groups trained twice a week for ten weeks, while the control group did not strength train at all. For both training groups body composition was analysed in weeks 0 and 11, so that changes in muscle mass and fat mass could be identified. At the same time each subject performed strength tests with 50 percent of their respective 10RM for each of the nine exercises. This publication shows the average changes of body composition and strength for each exercise in both training groups as well as a body composition analysis of each of the 43 subjects.

Book excerpt: Purpose: Investigate the effects of low- and high-volume RT combined with critical reflection on muscular size and strength. Methods: This study randomized trained men into two groups: LVR and HVR. Muscle strength was assessed via 3RM tests in the squat, stiff-leg deadlift and leg press. Muscle hypertrophy was evaluated through a combination of DXA, BodPod, and ultrasound (US) measurements. Results: Strength in all compound lifts increased significantly among both groups; between group differences favoured HVR. Significant increases in indicators of hypertrophy were discovered for DXA LBM, FFM via BodPod, and several measures of muscle thickness. Critical reflection improved RT preparedness and chronic performance - albeit to a "low" degree. The main themes that emerged were: training facilitators, obstacles, behaviours, focus, cognitions, exercise technique, effort, mental resilience, recovery. Conclusion: Ecologically-valid RT regimens significantly improve muscular strength and indicators of hypertrophy. Critical reflection was deemed to be beneficial to RT.
