Book Influence of Thermal Cycles on Properties of Duplex Stainless Steels Duprop

Download or read book Influence of Thermal Cycles on Properties of Duplex Stainless Steels Duprop written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex stainless steels become more and more attractive, both from technical and economical points of view. However, use of duplex stainless steels is limited to 300 °C. Metallurgical transformation and phase precipitations can affect the mechanical and corrosion properties over long-term exposure at elevated temperatures. In some cases, however, it can be interesting to submit a duplex stainless steel to a thermal cycle. In this work the influence of short thermal cycles on the properties of duplex stainless steel has been studied. Four duplex stainless steel grades have been selected: two superduplex grades, one standard grade and one lean duplex. The influence of thermal cycles has been studied on base materials and welds. The influence of plastic deformation has also been investigated. The influences of thermal cycles have been investigated on toughness and corrosion properties. The microstructural evolutions have also been studied. Results show that thermal cycles can affect toughness properties and corrosion properties in different ways. For example, at the lower temperature, toughness can be strongly reduced while localised corrosion resistance is not affected. At the higher temperature, both the corrosion resistance and the toughness can be significantly reduced. This is because of the microstructural evolution in the steels. The possible influence of thermal cycles on stress relaxation of welded structures has been studied experimentally and with the help of thermal simulation. It has been demonstrated that rate of stress relaxation up to 70 % can be achieved. The results of this work can be used to determine whether thermal cycles are suitable for a particular application. The thermal cycles acceptable depend on the base material, on the weld technique used and on the material specification.

Book Duplex Stainless Steels

Download or read book Duplex Stainless Steels written by Iris Alvarez-Armas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex Stainless Steels (DSSs) are chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloys that are usually in proportions optimized for equalizing the volume fractions of austenite and ferrite. Due to their ferritic-austenitic microstructure, they possess a higher mechanical strength and a better corrosion resistance than standard austenitic steels. This type of steel is now increasing its application and market field due to its very good properties and relatively low cost. This book is a review of the most recent progress achieved in the last 10 years on microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties, as well as applications, due to the development of new grades. Special attention will be given to fatigue and fracture behavior and to proposed models to account for mechanical behavior. Each subject will be developed in chapters written by experts recognized around the international industrial and scientific communities. The use of duplex stainless steels has grown rapidly in the last 10 years, particularly in the oil and gas industry, chemical tankers, pulp and paper as well as the chemical industry. In all these examples, topics like welding, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties (mainly in the fatigue domain) are crucial. Therefore, the update of welding and corrosion properties and the introduction of topics like texture effects, fatigue and fracture strength properties, and mechanical behavior modeling give this book specific focus and character.

Book Effect of Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of ASTM A 890 Gr6A Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Download or read book Effect of Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of ASTM A 890 Gr6A Super Duplex Stainless Steel written by M. Martins and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex stainless steels were initially developed for the manufacture of thermomechanically formed products. However, the increasing demand for casting components of these materials has led to the application of a widely developed technology for this forming process. After undergoing a solution annealing heat treatment, these materials become thermodynamically metastable systems, since the concentration of solute atoms in solid solution is so high that they become saturated, causing them to seek a lower free energy state when exposed to different temperatures. These systems reach a more stable thermodynamic condition by the precipitation of various intermetallic phases, depending on the temperatures to which they are exposed. Thermal energy serves as a catalyst to "overcome" the energy barrier that separates the metastable and stable phases. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of several heat treatment temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an ASTM A 890/A 890M Gr6A super duplex stainless steel. The increase in hardness and the decrease in impact toughness of these materials in impact tests were found to be directly correlated with the increase in sigma phase concentration in their microstructure, which tended to precipitate into ferrite/austenite interfaces. When the sigma phase was completely dissolved by the heat treatment, the material's hardness was determined by the volumetric concentration of ferrite and austenite in the microstructure, and the energy absorbed in the impact test reached approximately 220 J at room temperature.

Book Stainless Steels for Design Engineers

Download or read book Stainless Steels for Design Engineers written by Michael F. McGuire and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2008 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of growth of stainless steel has outpaced that of other metals and alloys, and by 2010 may surpass aluminum as the second most widely used metal after carbon steel. The 2007 world production of stainless steel was approximately 30,000,000 tons and has nearly doubled in the last ten years. This growth is occurring at the same time that the production of stainless steel continues to become more consolidated. One result of this is a more widespread need to understand stainless steel with fewer resources to provide that information. The concurrent technical evolution in stainless steel and increasing volatility of raw material prices has made it more important for the engineers and designers who use stainless steel to make sound technical judgments about which stainless steels to use and how to use them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.

Book Microstructure Tailored Stainless Steels with High Mechanical Performance at Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Microstructure Tailored Stainless Steels with High Mechanical Performance at Elevated Temperature written by Kamran Saeidi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels are widely used in chemical, structural and automotive applications due to their high room-temperature mechanical properties, toughness, corrosion resistance and low cost. However, tendency and rise in industrial demands for components to be used at high temperature with good mechanical performance and corrosion resistance limit their usage in many applications and narrow down their service criteria. Tailoring the microstructure, tuning the chemistry, adjusting the phase composition and introducing a dense 3D network of dislocations can tailor and develop stainless steels with high performance for extreme conditions, such as elevated temperatures. In this chapter, the effect of the microstructure of additively manufactured and thermo-mechanically processed stainless steels on the high temperature mechanical performance is discussed and a comparison is made with conventional steels. Moreover, new mechanisms are introduced and discussed co-relating the microstructure and properties.
