This book was released on 2015 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized the 2013 language arts data from the Mississippi Curriculum Test II to examine the impact Pre-k has on the reading achievement of low socio-economic African American students. This study was guided by one research question and employed a causal-comparative research design. The research question sought to determine the difference in MCT2 language arts scores of third grade students who participated in a school district’s Pre-k program and those who did not attend the district’s Pre-k program. The results indicated that there was a significant difference in the language arts scores of students who attended Pre-k and those that did not. The study concludes with implications for practicing educators and recommendations for future research.

Book The Effect of Pre kindergarten and Head Start Intervention on the Achievement of First Grade Students

Download or read book The Effect of Pre kindergarten and Head Start Intervention on the Achievement of First Grade Students written by Kimberly Chevelle Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate if there was any significant difference in the reading portion of the Criteria Reference Criterion Test (CRCT) of first grade students who attend pre-kindergarten and those who didn’t in rural southwest Georgia. The study investigated the effect of pre-kindergarten achievement intervention of first grade students. Two educators gave first grade students reading instruction on the five components in a 135 minute reading block on a daily basis. The Georgia Pre-kindergarten Program was established in 1993 to provide the state’s 4-year-olds with high-quality preschool experiences. The Head Start program was developed in 1965 as a comprehensive early childhood development program designed to provide education, health, and social services to low-income children, ages 3 and 5, and their families. School Readiness is an educational issue of growing concern.

Download or read book The Impact of a School based Pre kindergarten Program on Kindergartener s Reading Test Scores written by Emily M. Edgar and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the reading achievement of kindergarteners that participated in a pre-kindergarten program and of those who had not participated in a Pre-K program as measured by the DIBELS kindergarten subtests given through the 2008-09 school year. For this particular study, only two components of the DIBELS test were administered and analyzed: Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF) and Nonsense Word Fluency (PSF). DIBELS data was collected from a rural school district in southeastern Alabama, from 2 groups, Pre-K and Non Pre-K. Based on the results of this study, students show some benefit from school-based Pre-K programs in comparison to those students who do not attend and participate in school-based Pre-K programs.

Book African American English and the Achievement Gap

Download or read book African American English and the Achievement Gap written by Holly K. Craig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many African American children make use of African American English (AAE) in their everyday lives, and face academic barriers when introduced to Standard American English (SAE) in the classroom. Research has shown that students who can adapt and use SAE for academic purposes demonstrate significantly better test scores than their less adaptable peers. Accordingly, AAE use and its confirmed inverse relationship to reading achievement have been implicated in the Black-White Test Score Gap, thus becoming the focus of intense research and practical interest. This volume discusses dialectal code-switching from AAE to SAE and stresses the benefits and importance of African American students becoming bi-dialectal. It provides background theory and science supporting the most promising educational approach to date, Contrastive Analysis, a set of longstanding methods drawn from Second Language research and used effectively with students ranging from kindergarten through college. It offers a deeper knowledge of AAE use by students, the critical features of Contrastive Analysis, and detailed information about successful applications which teachers can apply in their own pedagogy.

Book Impact of Early Childhood Education on Later Academic Achievement

Download or read book Impact of Early Childhood Education on Later Academic Achievement written by Amy Weems and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of participation in the district's early childhood program on later academic achievement as measured by the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) mathematics and reading assessments in Grades 3, 4, and 5. The studied district opened a centralized early childhood school in 2009 and implemented the Texas Pre-K Guidelines. The STAAR test results were available for five cohorts of students who attended the early childhood school and took the STAAR mathematics and reading assessments in the years 2014-2018. A quasi-experimental design was used to analyze differences in STAAR mathematics and reading scores for students who attended the district's early childhood program and students who did not attend. A two-way factorial ANOVA was used to examine the effect on test scores of attending the district's early childhood school and other demographic categories, Latinx, African American, socio-economic status, and English language learners (ELL). The results show that attending the early childhood program did not have a statistically significant effect for Latinx or African American students. However, the mean mathematics scores for economically-disadvantaged students who attended the early childhood program were higher than their peers who did not attend. ELL students who attended the program also had higher mathematics scores but the differences were usually not statistically significant. The same impact on economically-disadvantaged students and ELLs was not found on reading tests.

Book The Effects of Texas s Targeted Pre Kindergarten Program on Academic Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Texas s Targeted Pre Kindergarten Program on Academic Performance written by Rodney Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a resurgence in research that investigates the efficacy of early investments as a means of reducing gaps in academic performance. However, the strongest evidence for these effects comes from experimental evaluations of small, highly enriched programs. We add to this literature by assessing the extent to which a large-scale public program, Texas's targeted pre-Kindergarten (pre-K), affects scores on math and reading achievement tests, the likelihood of being retained in grade, and the probability that a student receives special education services. We find that having participated in Texas's targeted pre-K program is associated with increased scores on the math and reading sections of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS), reductions in the likelihood of being retained in grade, and reductions in the probability of receiving special education services. We also find that participating pre-K increases mathematics scores for students who take the Spanish version of the TAAS tests. These results show that even modest, public pre-K program implemented at scale can have important effects on students educational achievement.

Book The Impact of Pre kindergarten Programs on Student Achievement in Mississippi Elementary Schools

Download or read book The Impact of Pre kindergarten Programs on Student Achievement in Mississippi Elementary Schools written by Fletcher B. Harges and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the states bordering Mississippi invests large amounts of money in providing children with state-funded pre-k programs in their public schools. However, Mississippi falls behind these states and does not similarly invest in this effort to provide many of its children with the opportunity to attend state-funded pre-k programs. Because school readiness is such a huge concern for instructional leaders of Mississippi schools, there is a need to determine the benefits associated with offering pre-k to all students throughout the state. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact pre-k has on the academic achievement of students in Mississippi school districts. Two hypotheses were tested in order to determine if a significant difference existed between pre-k attendees and non-attendees using 2015-2016 MAP test data in reading and math. After conducting an independent samples t test, findings from this study suggested there is a significant difference between the MAP reading and math test scores of 2015-2016 third grade students in Mississippi schools who attended public school pre-k programs and students who did not. Thus, it is important to invest more resources in pre-k in efforts to close the achievement gap between MS and the neighboring states.
