Download or read book Efficacy of Power Balance Bracelets as a Potential Physical Therapy Intervention written by Casey McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Athletes and patients approach physical therapists with questions about health and performance-enhancing products. It is critical that physical therapists consider scientific evidence of the efficacy of these products to determine if they should be incorporated into intervention strategies. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of the popular Power Balance bracelet using standard tests and measures performed by physical therapists and other healthcare professionals. Methods: Fifty-six NCAA Division III athletes from Utica Colleges men's and women's soccer teams and the cross country team volunteered to complete four different tests. The athletes complete three trials at each station: the vertical jump test; sit and reach test; Y-balance test; and grip strength test. To minimize the learner effect, the trials for each station were randomized and the participants as well as the data-collector were blinded to which bracelet (the test item or a placebo) was worn during each trial. Results: At a confidence interval of p ≤ 0.05 there were no significant differences observed in grip strength, vertical jump, flexibility, or balance regardless of which bracelet was worn. The average scores were consistent across all three trials. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, the efficacy of the Power Balance bracelet could not be supported. Therefore, it is not recommended to apply the Power Balance bracelet as a physical therapy intervention. Download or read book Effects of Barefoot Strength Training on Athletic Performance written by Brian R. Kownacki and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of barefoot and shod strength training on vertical jump height, lower body maximum strength, sprint speed, and agility were assessed in male high school athletes. All participants were pre-tested in vertical jump height, lower body maximum strength, sprint speed, and agility measurements. The participants were then separated into barefoot (n=15) and shod (n=13) strength training groups. After completing an 8-week strength training protocol, all participants were retested for each measurement of athletic performance. The barefoot and shod training groups showed no significant differences in vertical jump height, lower body maximum strength, sprint speed, and agility. This data showed there was no improvement in any of the measures of athletic performance between the barefoot and shod conditions when strength training for 8 weeks.

Download or read book A Thesaurus of English Word Roots written by Horace Gerald Danner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 1007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace G. Danner’s A Thesaurus of English Word Roots is a compendium of the most-used word roots of the English language. As Timothy B. Noone notes in his foreword: “Dr. Danner’s book allows you not only to build up your passive English vocabulary, resulting in word recognition knowledge, but also gives you the rudiments for developing your active English vocabulary, making it possible to infer the meaning of words with which you are not yet acquainted. Your knowledge can now expand and will do so exponentially as your awareness of the roots in English words and your corresponding ability to decode unfamiliar words grows apace. This is the beginning of a fine mental linguistic library: so enjoy!” In A Thesaurus of English Word Roots, all word roots are listed alphabetically, along with the Greek or Latin words from which they derive, together with the roots’ original meanings. If the current meaning of an individual root differs from the original meaning, that is listed in a separate column. In the examples column, the words which contain the root are then listed, starting with their prefixes, for example, dysacousia, hyperacousia. These root-starting terms then are followed by terms where the root falls behind the word, e.g., acouesthesia and acoumeter. These words are followed by words where the root falls in the middle or the end, as in such terms as bradyacusia and odynacusis.. In this manner, A Thesaurus of English Word Roots places the word in as many word families as there are elements in the word. This work will interest linguists and philologists and anyone interested in the etymological aspects of English language.
