Book The Impact of Increased Nursing Knowledge on Pain Management in the Emergency Department

Download or read book The Impact of Increased Nursing Knowledge on Pain Management in the Emergency Department written by Randolph Eugene Derr and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed and executed to investigate the potential correlation between increased nursing knowledge on pain management and effective pain control in the acute care setting. The process included creating a convenience sample of ED nurses at one community based hospital to receive directed education on pain and pain management. These volunteer nurses were given a pretest in the form of the Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (KASPR) to assess baseline knowledge. Concurrently, a retrospective chart review was conducted to record patient reported pain values from triage and discharge. Next, an educational program was conducted to provide increased awareness on various topics related to pain management. When all nurses within the sample had completed the education, a post test was conducted again utilizing the KASPR instrument. Lastly a second retrospective chart review was conducted to collect post education data on pain scores in triage and discharge. Analysis looked at the mean change in pain related to the mean change in nursing knowledge. Using Spearman's rho the results showed a complete lack of correlation between nursing education and changes in pain with an r(8) = .08 on a scale of -1 to 1 and a significance level of .826 with a set p > .05.

Book Emergency Department Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Infant Pain and Pain Management and Perceptions of Certified Child Life Practitioners

Download or read book Emergency Department Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Infant Pain and Pain Management and Perceptions of Certified Child Life Practitioners written by Kayci L. Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examines Emergency Department nurses' perceptions of infant pain management and their perceptions of consulting and engaging with certified child life specialists (CCLS). Participants consisted of 29 registered nurses that currently work in pediatric emergency departments. Participants completed an online survey that assessed participants' perceptions of the child life specialist role, use of nonpharmacological pain management, and their knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain and pain management. Results revealed that pediatric nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management in children varied by level of education and amount of experience working in pediatrics. Findings also suggest that most nurses recognize the significant impact that child life specialists have on the psychosocial wellbeing of patients and families but might not recognize fully how child life interventions can improve the physical well-being of patients. Study implications for practice are discussed.

Book Knowledge and Attitudes of Registered Nurses Toward Pain

Download or read book Knowledge and Attitudes of Registered Nurses Toward Pain written by Kelly Lumley-Leger and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research provided relevant data to support pain research literature that finds nurses do not have the knowledge base that they require to sufficiently provide effective pain management. The data demonstrated that nurses have mixed attitudes toward pain. These two findings have been observed in the literature for more than 20 years, but were important results for the hospitals and the nurses involved in the study. The purposes of this study were to identify the level of knowledge and attitudes in a sample of nurses fi-om the surgical and medical units in three hospitals, and determine whether a difference between these two groups existed. The institutional resources to support pain relief practices provided by each hospital were also documented. Data were collected using a convenience sample from the medical and surgical units of three hospitals. Ofthe 1 13 nurses who volunteered to participate, 78 worked in surgical units and 35 worked in medical units. Demographic data were collected about the participants. The established instruments used to obtain data about knowledge and attitude included: (a) Nurses Knowledge of Pain Issues Survey, (b)Attitude to Pain Control Scale, and (c) Andrew and Robert Vignette. Data collected were quantitative along with two open-ended questions for a rich, qualitative section. Inadequate knowledge and outdated attitudes were very evident in the responses. Data from the open-ended questions described how nurses assessed pain and the most conmion problems caring for patients in pain. Nursing practice implications for these hospitals involve initiating a process to develop an educational pain program for nurses throughout the hospital. Utilizing findings from other studies, the program should have an interdisciplinary approach to the planning, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing support. This study supports the belief that inadequate pain management has been attributed to many factors, most importantly to a lack of knowledge. Pain is a costly, unnecessary complication for the patient as well as the hospital. It follows then, that it is in the best interest of all involved to implement an educational pain program in order to influence practice.
